old echo canyon SY newsgroup members CD
Hi Folks!
Is someone here who remembers the old SY newsgroup 'echo canyon'? At some point a CD project was started by the mebers of the NG and lots of members of the NG contributed songs and a CD was put together. Now my questions: Since I lost the old data.. I need the complete tracklist of the cd if possible and it would be great to get a jpg or something from the original cover artwork! Any help is greatly appreciated! thx + all best, n. |
that would be cool to hear ... upload anyone?
|
there was one i put together on alt.music.sonic-youth but considering i'd completely forgotten about echo canyon til i read this post, i don't think that's the same one.

Chris the CD I'm talking about must be around 9 years old... and was done by the members of alt.music.sonic-youth (echo canyon) ... Can you help out? Thx! Nila |
I remember something about a cover record that I'm pretty sure got started on the echo canyon list. I also remember Chris Lawrence being "responable" for it in some way? Could be wrong tho. My band, Tenns Bafra, provided a smashing live version of Hendrix Necro. Pretty good, as I recall it.
www.tennisbafra.org for more info |
i remember that ever so vaguely, but can contriute nothing to help in your noble search...
|
yup,. the one nico99 refers to is the 'noisy touch' one i put together on alt.music.sonic-youth.....BUT alt.music.sonic-youth was a usenet newsgroup and echo canyon was a mailing list, so nila may be referring to another...

yes, sure... I remember.. you are perfectly right w/ this. it was not done by alt.music.sonic-youth. it was done by the members of the echo canyon ML! I will go deeper in my old cd archive and trying finding this cd.. but i am pretty sure i wont find any tracklist information etc. that could make this thing round + cool for sharing... so if you know someone from the old canyon days... any help is greatly appreciated! |
The good old dial up days. I remember reading the posts there without figuring out how to post myself.

ha ha. this was way before my time but sounds intriguing. oh, please share!!
|
haha. i 'd have to find it -- i could post select offerings, i suppose. the version of PCH was unreal.
|
wow i think i have vague recollection regarding a cd on that echo canyon mailing list - . I think my contribution, of which I didn't keep a copy for myself, never reached the one who was gathering the material :(
are there any archives of that mailing list? I wonder what kind of bullshit i was writing back then. i have no memory of a a.m.s-y cd |
|
Hm - I should still have that CD somewhere. Let me root through some storage boxes tonight, and I'll try to upload it.

Here's the "NOISY TOUCH" compilation. Back in the late 90s, tribute cassettes were all the rage on usenet newsgroups, and that's how this one started. Because I take forever to finish anything, it ended up being a CD-R.
I cut the last four songs off. One because its exclusion was requested by the performer, one because it's an awfully mixed (and masturbatory) version of "Mote" by me, and then a version of "She's in a Bad Mood" that's basically 6 minutes of coins being dropped and a girl reciting the title. If this is your track, I'm sorry! I've misplaced some of the artwork, but originally the idea was that the tracks weren't labeled in order, as some of the songs are radical reinterpretations. I've left the files unlabeled just to perpetuate the surprise element. I'm not sure any of these people are still lurking around - this is a decade old, after all... Speak up if you're out there! Otherwise, enjoy some weird and often entertaining spins on sonic classics (or not). http://www.mediafire.com/?18yu2t7yanc7p (...and yes, I know the name is awful. we had many unsuccessful threads on that topic...) |

Thanks Chris! I was interested in hearing this. |
I cant grab it now, but do you have a list of performers?
|

it's included in the text file |
but "I can't grab it now" -- can you copy & paste?

I didn't know if it would spoil the element of surprise Chris mentioned.... NOISY TOUCH: MADE IN AMSY This is a collection of Sonic Youth songs as interpreted by members of the alt.music.sonic-youth newsgroup between 1999 and 2001. It contains, in no particular order, MY FAVOURITE VILLAIN performing "100%", TENNIS BAFRA performing "HENDRIX NECRO", SIMON performing "HALLOWEEN", PUEBLO performing "CATHOLIC BLOCK", PHIL CHAMBERLIN performing "STALKER", BEAN SAYZ, "FUQ ME, LUGH!" performing "TOKYO EYE", WIPE HANDS ON PANTS performing "PCH", MATT KREFTING performing "TUFF GNARL", RATS WITH WINGS performing "FREEZER BURN", CHRIS LAWRENCE performing "THERESA'S SOUND-WORLD" & "WINNER'S BLUES", AUT performing "SILVER BREEZE", SPAM performing "MY FRIEND GOO", and THE FAMILY GHOST performing "I DON'T WANT TO PUSH IT". Initially envisioned as a cassette release, it saw limited CD-R release in 2001 on the Silver Circle label. |
ah ok thx. A band I was in was on some internetx SY cover album around 2000 (or was it 2001? 2002? Hmm.) But I have no recollection of what it was or where or what. It's not this though.

MATT KREFTING performing "TUFF GNARL"

Kool, well thanks again for this Chris, I've enjoyed listening to it!
|
awesome, thanks. will listen after my ginseng mouthwashing session.

The link to the download isn't working anymore (file doesn't exist). If Chris or someone would be able to upload it again or email the version of Hendrix Necro that Tennis Bafra did, I'd really appreciate it.
Btw, Tennis Bafra still exits and Sonic Youth were nice enough to put one of our videos up on their facebook site the other day. most likely, when I met him in line at the Thurson & Alan Silva show in Amherst was it '99? he and Aaron were young enthusiastic Hampshire corndogs, in the best way. Matt's a little more jaded now. Aaron is supposedly living in Brooklyn. SON OF EARTHFLESH ON BONE!!! |

Reminiscent of "Thurston @ 13", probably was him and Coco. |
Yes dammit! Please share if you have it. I'm talking to you, Chris Lawrence...

I posted on that list with a different alias, but I can't remember what it was anymore. I think i offered to do a folk/country arrangement of Schizophrenia for the comp, but never followed through with it. I remember there was a nice Echo Canyon header done in slashes and dots and other punctuation marks. Anybody have that still?

Exactly what I was thinking...! Pretty cool... |
are there archives of the echo canyon mailing list? apparently I was an asshole...
