overrated movies
Raging Bull
|
Ha! You wish! :D
One of Scorsese's best. |
Citizen Kane for supposedly being the best movie ever made.
|
the godfather.
|
Shawshank Redemption. I want back the two hours that I wasted watching that piece of crap.
Anything and everything made by Stanley Kubrick. |
i will go with citizen kane for sure and dirty dancing which i think should be erased from the minds of everyone via a large electric shock.
|
Quote:
it was! up to that point anyway. look at movies before 1941. citizen kane is great in many ways. [edit: this will save me the explanation] of course by orwell i prefer a touch of evil and the trial-- the trial! wow that is a fucking great movie. --- overrated: i second the shawshank redemption. it's listed as #2 movie ever on imdb-- by what pack of donkeys may i ask? add all the lord of the ring turds. big expensive production for sure, but a stupid story, except for when the trees kick ass. still it doesn't make 3 longass movies worth the price of admission. and fuck frodo & his stupid friends. |
Most David Lynch films. Most.
|
i never really liked bladerunner and god knows why anyone likes black hawk down!
|
I'll second Bladerunner.
Little Miss Sunshine gets a lot hype too, but it just doesn't cut it for me. |
Quote:
which cut? the original cut, the directors cut, the revised cut, the new cut, or the superultrafinished cut? god damn what a pain in the ass mess. i did like the directors cut, beats the original by miles, removes the voiceover, etc. another movie that perhaps suffers when seen out of it historical context since cyberpunk exploded after that. william gibson went to see when it was out and had to walk out because he felt it was too close to what he was doing and he didn't want to be influenced. about little miss sunshine, it's ok, not bad... who's hyping it? i suspect the blockbuster crowd who saw something like this for the first time EVARRRR. |
Quote:
Er. Either cut? It just simply wasn't something I was all that enthralled in. I couldn't tell you which cut I saw. Maybe it was the version, and not the movie itself. Which would you recommend? Little Miss Sunshine was hyped in general. Whether from Hollywood press, or indie slags. |
Donnie Darko
Requiem for a Dream Scanner Darkly All Lord of the Rings All Shrek All Pirates of the Caribbean All Matrix etc. all suck and are therefore overrated.. pretty much any film that's come out since the 00's that has had any acclaim. and no there are no bad scorsesce films, his films are underrated if anything, raging bull rules my balls. |
Red by Kieslowski.
I actually enjoyed it, but I have no interest in seeing it again. Blue, on the other hand, is a keeper. The Double Life of Veronique I have to revisit. |

shawshank is a genius film, made from a genius short story by stephen king. if you don't like it then you don't like it, but that takes away NOTHING from the quality of said film.
I nominate each and every single DAVID LYNCH cinematic jerk-off fest for overrated. HIGHLY overrated. |
genius short story by stephen king
This phrase is just so hard to wrap one's head around... |
Quote:
gots to be read. stephen king has quite a few genius short stories. his novels however, are another tale altogether. |
Quote:
aye. word. etc. kids too. sawshank redemption is, in my opinion, not a bad film but certainly not one of the best ever; i didn't know it was praised so highly. |
a clockwork orange isn't as great as you'd be led to believe. it gets kind of difficult to pay attention to once they start reforming him.
|
I think Scorsese makes films with a vocabulary that really doesn't appeal very much to me. I'll watch a Scorsese movie and say "the acting was good, the plot was good, the cinematography was good, but I didn't really feel anything or feel like I got anything out of it." Gangs of New York and Raging Bull both were like that for me. I liked the new one in that I did care about the characters and it was suspenseful, but I still felt pretty unaffected by it.
|
i liked reqiuem for a dream and i like david lynch movies. i dont however like shrek and thought the ring was very very overated.
|
Quote:
And I'll add Scarface (the Al Pacino one) |
lynch is god.
|
Amelie.
|
Good call on Amelie!
|
Quote:
ha ha ha ha!! i laugh, sir. for you are out of your wazoo. spartacus? surely a piece of crap. however: barry lyndon? an underrated masterpiece without question. dr. strangelove? please, brother... that film is pure genius. i won't go on and on. but the only cinematic turd kubrick ever issued was spartacus, and the one to blame for that is kirk douglas, not kubrick-- the fucker messed with the script, the production, the editing, etc.-- hammy motherfucker! Quote:
oui, bien su^r! cute movie or whatever but i so fell asleep the first time around. too many visual gimmicks designed to fool the unwary. |
Terrible and/or overrated Kubrick films:
Spartacus Lolita Dr Strangelove 2001 A Clockwork Orange Barry Lyndon The Shining Full Metal Jacket Surely a record? |
I'll give you Lolita (I hated every character in this movie), and I'll give you Spartacus, but Dr. Strangelove and A Clockwork Orange?
You're nuts. |
Quote:
ah ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha you're a master of comedy! but for the joke to be funnier you have to take spartacus out of there. |
Quote:
the second half of that movie is my favorite part! |
A clockwork orange may not have aged well (especially the beginning) but it's still a great movie.
The Kubrick movie that is overrated in my opinion is Eyes wide shut. |
Quote:
Ditto. |
Quote:
dr strangelove is the greatest anti-war, anti-government movie ever made 2001 changed cinema forever. the shining is the best ghost movie ever. full metal jacket is, for the first hour, pure genius. |
Quote:
Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001, and the Shining are among my faves. Paths of Glory is an incredibly underrated Kubrick movie. |
Quote:
really? i thought it was rated quite LOW. a lot of people didn't like it for various reasons-- to me it was a great horror movie, however. i was fucking terrified through most of it, in a way that dracula shit can't make me (i laugh at horror movies, or they gross me out, but they don't "scare" me-- this one did.) oh yes, the real monsters--the mega-rich. |
Quote:
And I'll add Chicago. I went to see the show, and it's fantastic and sexy and camp. The film wasn't any of that. |
Quote:
That's because musicals are fucking stupid. |
Quote:
To me Amelie is a cute idealistic movie, which is a nice pick me up, but Jeunet's earlier films are a lot better. |
