what are your talents?

title is pretty self explanatory. make a long list if you want or feel free to brag.

sewing (by hand)

cooking, cleaning, and other domestic tasks
writing

Danny Himself 09.07.2007 09:04 PM

I am pretty good at picking up musical instruments and playing them. I can also draw stuff. I am a good amateur photographer. I cook a lot and can be relied on to present a good meal. I am well on my way to mastering the english language.

I am also a rookie time traveller- though I have only time travelled once before, I'll count it as a talent as it's pretty impressive.

Savage Clone 09.07.2007 09:09 PM

Rock
Sarcasm
Lifting and moving very heavy things
Putting on the occasional event and not going in the hole
Writing (highly debatable)

pbradley 09.07.2007 09:12 PM

tons of useless boy scouting knowledge
guitar/bass playing
insightful (vague, I know, but I'm known to raise interesting points in my philosophy classes)
good at debating/argumentation
decent photographer although I haven't done it in years

gmku 09.07.2007 09:31 PM

Procrastinating, missing opportunities, and self-delusion are the top three, followed far behind by typing skills, an affiinity for animals, and knowing more than most people my age about the popularity resurgence of the long-player record.

A woman who can fix shit? I'm down on bended knee.

Cantankerous 09.07.2007 09:36 PM

i'm very good at fixing things. i don't know why. once i read my own palm and it said something about that due to the shape of my hand or something like that.

luxinterior 09.07.2007 09:46 PM

Painting
Being a bitch
Assembling the best Powerpoint presentations anyone has ever seen
Not cooking; getting other people to cook for me

gmku 09.07.2007 09:53 PM

I like to think I can write, play guitar, and think critically, but I may be delusional about all that.

By the by, a local "alternative" newspaper is publishing my article on "the resurgent popularity" of the LP.

Cantankerous 09.07.2007 10:04 PM

that's excellent, congratulations!
i could never have anything published, i'm too shy and self critical to have my name attached to anything.

Correcting everyday grammar mistakes ("good" instead of "well", that one hurts), sarcasm, writing to some extent.

I make a pretty mean omlette as well, western specifically.

All writers feel that way. Or at least many do. It's part of it--you always see ways you could have done it better after it's in print.

If anyone here's a natural writer, you are.

Wow, yeah, you should. Is it acoustic or electric? I love that song.

well i'm working on it as we speak and so far i really do like the rhythm guitar track and the vocals. it's acoustic because i don't want to piss my mom off and wake her up but i'm doing these little guitar parts in the background and i'm going to put overdrive on it.

gmku 09.07.2007 11:31 PM

My bro and I used to do that one all the time, both of us on acoustic. It's got a lot of good places for easy fills and stuff.

davenotdead 09.07.2007 11:32 PM

sports [except soccer and skateboarding] which happen to be the cool ones in australia....

uncanny knowledge of actors' roles in film...and several obscure ones...basically im an audio student, and when i watch film with film students at school, they always say 'oh, him from so-and-so' , and i always come up with the name of the actor and what previous work theyve done [usually immediately]...i dont even know if this qualifies as a talent...

noise-making?....i like to think so...im fairly decent with the use of effects to achieve the sounds im looking for...

grammar/english-language editing/writing....and spelling.

One's conversational voice isn't necessarily the same as one's writing voice--even though one tries to write conversationally. I know excellent writers who can barely put two words together over a cup of coffee, but who write circles around me.

What I've found helps to get over my shyness around people is to pretend I'm somebody else. Sometimes I put on Larry David, other times David Duchovny, depending on how old and bald I'm feeling.

Cantankerous 09.07.2007 11:36 PM

well it seems i can't quite line up my "lead" track with the others because i'm slightly incompetent so we will just have to see how this turns out.

but basically don't let my bright colours and exotic fabrics fool you. i'm completely different conversationally.

davenotdead 09.07.2007 11:38 PM

what are you recording to? software i presume?

Cantankerous 09.07.2007 11:39 PM

uh yeah audacity
i used to have this really neat sony acid program but i don't know where that went

There's something cool about the rough mix, though. You should post it when it's ready.

Cantankerous 09.07.2007 11:42 PM

it's a bit too late, i already wrote over the guitar track but this sounds better anyway. you'll see. i'm working on all the EQ and stuff now because i don't feel like doing any more.

LittlePuppetBoy 09.07.2007 11:43 PM

gmku 09.07.2007 11:57 PM

I record on a little cassette player sometimes. Just me and my acoustic. Then I play it back on the stereo. It's usually pretty awful.

Cantankerous 09.08.2007 12:01 AM

i have one of those and sometimes i do that
to be honest i like doing that better than doing all the processing and mixing and shit.

okay so i'll post this in this thread in a minute. it's exporting the mp3 right now.
forgive the big fuzzy noises you may hear in a couple places, i think it has to do with the microphone but maybe it adds to it. who knows. i'm going to stop talking and just post the damn song.

Cantankerous 09.08.2007 12:05 AM

here it is

gmku 09.08.2007 12:18 AM

I'm freaking impressed! Nice job. I like how you go from the minor to the major at the end. Are you just going from A minor to A major?

I like the different strum pattern from the way the Stones do it. It's subtle but updates it nicely.

gmku 09.08.2007 12:19 AM

My WMP window makes a nice light show to go with it, too.

wow, thank you!
yeah at the end i'm going like this, i don't know the chord names because i never do, just the specific note (i would call them both an A chord but i cant get more specific than that)

e|x
B|3
G|3
D|3
A|0
E|x

e|x
B|2
G|3
D|3
A|0
E|x

gmku 09.08.2007 12:30 AM

Yeah, top's A major, bottom's minor.

My version is a copycat of the Sticky Fingers cut, although sometimes I slow it way down to try to make it sound even more desolate.

You might try that for a different effect w/ yr version. Slow it down a beat or two. Not that you have to. It's great as it is.

My brother sends me copies of songs, him singing with his acoustic, that sound like he's on speed. Like bluesy songs five times to fast, so they almost sound cheerful. I'm kind of the opposite. I like taking a fairly upbeat song, say, like Dead Flowers, and slowing it all the way down to a dirge.

Anyway, very cool, C.

Cantankerous 09.08.2007 12:31 AM

i usually slow everything down to a space rock tempo. if that makes sense.
i'm trying to think of another song i could play. i could play dead flowers actually. i might do that.

k-krack 09.08.2007 12:32 AM

- Fucking around with musical instruments
- Drawing on my binders (don't think this means I can draw at all, I just draw patterns or anti-patterns... all over the place... like... ALL...)
- Writing, I think...
- Noticing girls that are hot... I do this like a champ, it's weird.
- Sarcasm
- Talking about philosophy and my beliefs... it's weird I do that, too...
- Getting bad haircuts (I don't mean to, they just fall on me... from the sky... the sky of bad haircuts. Although, the cut I got today is actually not looking atrocious.)
- Talking for too long.
- Wearing tight shirts.
- Warping fragile minds.
- Putting distortion into every song. Fucking right.

gmku 09.08.2007 12:35 AM

e|x
B|3
G|3
D|3
A|0
E|x

Actually, I think that's a typo--you're one fret too high for an A on those numbered ones. Should be more like 2 2 2, and 1 2 2. ??? For an A chord anyway.

I think. I'm confused. I'm tired. Going to bed.

Cool. Have you heard the Cowboy Junkies' version of Dead Flowers? They take it way down, narcoticize it.
