Favourite Intros
I was watching this David Gilmour thing on the TV the other night and it reminded me of how much I like the intro to 'Wish You Were Here'. You know, the one where there's an acoustic guitar rhat sounds like it's being played on on old radio and then it suddenly becomes crystal clear.
Another favourite is the intro to 'Transmission' by Joy Division. I really like the way the drums kick in. What are yours? |
Sisters of Mercy - Some Kind Of Stranger
I can't think how to explain why I like it so much, it's something to do with what it does to the hairs on the back of my neck. The guitars build up this atmosphere, this expectation. At first I want to hear what's going to come next, what could live up to this sense of majesty, and then the majesty seems so beautiful I never want it to stop. |
Metallica's intro for Damage Inc. is my favourite of them all.
|
There's only one Intro for me. Guess which one.
|
I also thought of Damage Inc.
|
bodies by the sex pistols is really good.
|
shadowplay
only shallow friction damn this thread is not worthy enough to have me write all the things i want in it. |
The Spinners - It's a Shame (the guitar at the start is fantastic)
LISTEN! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aKme0F0PYIg |
"Chant for the Road" by Nels Cline Trio is awesome... as well as "Anthony" intro piece.

My Brightest Diamond - Dragonfly
Jeff Buckley - Mojo Pin, Grace, So real, Lover you should've come over, Dream Brother Elvis Costello & The Attractions - Watching the detectives The Stooges - Dirt Neil Young - Mellow my mind, Albuquerque, New mama Smashing Pumpkins - Mayonaise, For Martha Serge Gainsbourg - Ballade de Melody Nelson, Valse de Melody Television - Venus, Marquee moon, Elevation, Torn curtain Tim Buckley - Dream letter, Blue melody, Phantasmagoria in two (Dream letter version), Hallucinations (Peel sessions version), Love from room 109 (Dream letter version), Wayfaring stranger (best acoustic twelve-string intro ever) Laura Veirs - Parisian dream, Where gravity is dead, Lake swimming Interpol - Stella was a diver and she was always down Joy Division - Twenty-four hours, The eternal, Atmosphere, Novelty, New dawn fades, Shadowplay U2 - Like a song, The unforgettable fire, Where the streets have no name, Running to stand still, Mothers of the disappeared, Who's gonna ride your wild horses, The fly, Ultraviolet (light my way), Acrobat, love is blindness Björk - Isobel, Possibly maybe, Unravel, Bachelorette, Pagan poetry, Aurora The Notwist - My faults, Day 7, Chemicals, N.L., Pick up the phone, This room, Off the rails, Consequence Siouxsie & The Banshees - Switch, Into the light, Arabian knights, Cascade, Melt! |
Many Graveland intros are better than the actual songs.
"Honey" by Spacemen 3 has a pretty great intro. |
--Belle and Sebastian - The State I Am In (love the vocals only with the faded in music)
--Deerhoof - Cast Off Crown (gotta love the energy, followed by a nice break) --Dynasty - Adventures In The Land Of Music (Don't know if it's cause of the Camp-lo sample, but I could just loop the intro and cruise to it all day) --Melt Banana - Free The Bee (it's kinda creepy, riffled with anticipation) --Bloc Party - Like Eating Glass (nothing liked some looped guitars) --J Mascis - Take A Run At The Sun (it's Beach Boy-ishly fantastic) --Eddie Hazel - California Dreamin' (do I even have to say why?) --My Chemical Romance - Hang 'Em High (it's got that Ennio throwback) --Television - Torn Curtain (just plain ol' good) |
the man whose head expanded by the fall

the spaz'd out intro to Little Fury Things is a particular favorite of mine
|
The intro in "You Think I Aint Worth A Dollar, But I Feel Like A Millionare" is pretty cool I think. (Queens Of The Stone Age)
|
PJ Harvey, "Long Snake Moan."
"Mm-hm" - and the guitars and drums immediately kick in with a BAM! |
ok i might get shit for this but whole lotta love is pretty good.

Push by the cure

Another Metallica mention, this time, the first track from ...And Justice For All, "Blackened".
It got me every time... I remember stealing that album in seventh grade and putting it on the stereo and cranking up the volume super high to hear the fade in at the beginning... then being blown away like a Memorex commercial after the chords and drums hit. |
the intro to Holiday In Cambodia and, similarly, Fortunate Son

Black Flag - Six Pack.
I like the intro way more than the rest of the song. |

Ha ha, was just listening to that |
Dub Sex - Man on the Inside. A dark, anguished, obsessive song, a favourite of mine for nearly 20 years. Feedback, a rumbling bassline and good rhythm. The lyrics in that foghorn voice, accompanied by shards of streaming guitar, make it even better. What a great song.
Confused, On a circular route, Chasing someone; chasing you, I spent 24 hours in hot pursuit, And I know your future plans for you... The odds are stacked against you, that's why you always lose. Does that unnerve you? It should do... |
Like Eating Glass-Bloc Party
I'll Cry for you-Swans (a very tense minute of feedback) Candle-Sonic Youth Everything in its Right Place, You-Radiohead Revenge, Six Pack-Black Flag Filler-Minor Threat Sex Bomb-Flipper Down on the Street-the Stooges Sunday Morning-Velvet Underground 9-9-REM Split Myself in Two, Reward, Our Friends, Lost-Meat Puppets |
Led Zeppelin - 'Whole Lotta Love'
I dig Plant's little barely-audible grunting sigh followed by Page's opening riff. Actually, there are several great Zeppelin intros. |

Agreed, "Intro" is well worth being it's own song, and arguably even better than "Brave Men Run". It's actually one of my all time favorite Sonic Youth songs, though that list does run several pages... For Metallica intros, since that seems to be a whole separate thread within a thread here, I'd vote for "Fade to Black" actually. Most of the song is the intro really. Of course the intro to "Sweat Loaf" by the Butthole Surfers is an all time classic that is arguably superior to the song itself. |
Mogwai - "Yes! I am Long Way from Home"
|
Sigur Rós - Popplagið, Ný Batterí, Hjartað Hamast
Mogwai - Helicon 1 |
Building Steam With a Grain of Salt has an excellent intro. Fuck, the whole album is excellent.
|
"sonicl, this is nymphomaniac woman... nymphomaniac woman, this is sonicl...
okay... I'll just leave you two to get to know each other" Sorry, I couldn't help myself. Hee hee. |
