Smashing Pumpkins - The Aeroplane Flies High

Anyone else heard this boxset ?

It was released after Mellon Collie and is a collection of B-sides of their stuff. I was surprised to find a lot of good tracks on it.My sister had it from way back in 96 and i was bored one weekend so i listened to all of it. There's some great covers and original stuff on it.

My Favorite Tracks off it:
Said Sadly
Meladori Magpie
Clones (We're All) -This cover kicks ass
My Blue Heaven
The Aeroplane Flies High
Jupiter's Lament
Mouths of Babe

So what does everyone here think of it ? I think its alot better than most of the stuff from Adore and on.

HaydenAsche 03.22.2006 11:08 PM

I don't like the pumpkins. 'nuff said.

krebstar 03.22.2006 11:09 PM

I dig the Pumpkins, great box set. (cool case too)

dietzer123 03.22.2006 11:09 PM

rat in a cage is a cute song when it comes on the radio but other than that i'm not a pumpkins man

Alex's Trip 03.22.2006 11:34 PM

I want it.

xpresswaytoyrskull 03.23.2006 12:02 AM

I quite like Adore. The stuff in the Aeroplane box set is OK but not essential. I do agree there are some good covers. (The Cure - Night Like This).

Everyneurotic 03.23.2006 12:34 AM

i agree the box is pretty cool

haven't heard it though

krastian 03.23.2006 01:29 AM

Yeah....I bought it when it first came out. I used to be a huge Pumpkins fan, but after Billy shaved his head and got all "goth" or whatever I kind of lost interest. But yeah the box set is pretty good....I might have to bust it out sometime.

GeneticKiss 03.23.2006 01:42 AM

I love the riff from Transformer...

noisereductions 11.21.2008 11:55 AM

I've decided to bump this superold thread. I used to have this boxset in high school. But then I got rid of it at one point. I dont remember why or when. I recently found the "Tonight, Tonight" disc, though and remembered how awesome a lot of this material was. Like James' "The Boy" or the Cars cover or the medley of outtakes, etc. I wish I still had the other discs.

StevOK 11.21.2008 12:24 PM

I found a download for them a while back just so I could listen to that one Pistachio song (whatever it's called) that's just a bunch of riffs spliced together. Has some nice stuff in there.

noisereductions 11.21.2008 12:33 PM

yeah, it is a good set.

Washing Machine 11.21.2008 01:27 PM

No back when I was 14/15 and a super Pumpkins fan I used to always try so hard to get that set. Many of the song are on the Judus O disc on the special edition Greatest Hits. There still is a special place in my heart for the Pumpkins, probably nostagia though. Siamese Dream still rocks and Aeroplane Flies High is a great song in itself.

noisereductions 11.21.2008 01:30 PM

I still like them a lot. They seem to be cool to hate on. But whatever.

EVOLghost 11.21.2008 01:38 PM

Is that the box that comes in black and white or somethin'?

noisereductions 11.21.2008 01:57 PM

Yes.

Green Magnesium 11.21.2008 02:00 PM

I almost bought this one cheap online recently... but figured I'd wait and see what the Pumpkins have in the pipeline for future releases first.

I'd hate to buy an old set if something more "definitive" were to come out in the future.

Toxa 11.21.2008 05:41 PM

well, it's the great set of records. "The Boy" & "Pennies" are my favourites.

I agree entirely, however I really enjoy the Team Sleep cover of the title tune THe Aeroplanes Flight High from circa 2001 tour, they did it much much better..

ZEROpumpkins 11.22.2008 10:55 PM

I sold mine, but I enjoyed it a lot

RanaldoNecro 11.23.2008 12:50 AM

"jupiters lament"

EyeballGrowth 11.24.2008 02:44 PM

The 1979 disc was always my favorite

Cherry
Set the ray to Jerry
Believe ( probably the best James Iha Pumpkins song )
The Boy
" Ugly " is simple but man the atmosphere

Tribute to Johnny is proof of their virtuosity

Medellia of the gray skies
Meladori Magpie
Dreaming

I've always thought that set was half excellent, half mediocre. Siamese Dream and Pisces Iscariot will always be my favorite Pumpkins

noisereductions 11.24.2008 02:46 PM

I think "The Boy" is probably the best Iha song.

EyeballGrowth 11.24.2008 02:51 PM

Yea it's definately close, I like Believe only slightly better

noisereductions 11.24.2008 03:00 PM

His song "Go" on MACHINA II is excellent as well.

Never heard that album, My friend burned it for me back in 2000 when it came out but I never heard it. I worshipped the Pumpkins but I never liked anything they did after Melon Collie. They really did try to adopt a goth/techno metal sort of direction and it just didn't work. They became a completely different band. A few of the tracks from adore were alright though

al shabbray 11.24.2008 04:48 PM

I ve got the judas O disc. I remember tht aeroplane flies high was on it too, and I think mouth of babes. correct me if I am wrong

sarramkrop 11.24.2008 04:48 PM

''Step away from the MBV for a minute. You guys are lame. Live in today for a change. Can't believe this slipped off the frontpage with 12 views.''

DJ Rick couldn't have put it better if he could.

that boxed set is rare. but fuck that, what i'd really like to have my hands on is one of the original vinyl MACHINA II records.

i read that it was on ebay awhile ago up for $3000 but the guy changed his mind

Agreed

EyeballGrowth 11.28.2008 12:33 AM

For hardcore pumpkins fans. The SP Video Collection DVD, does anyone know what song is playing in the background on the Gish menu? The dark sounding one with the bass. I've been trying to figure this out forever

dressedindreams 11.28.2008 12:55 PM

it's a song called 'pale scales'
it was never released

punkaspoo 11.28.2008 01:53 PM

I downloaded this box set and realized that the Pumpkins bore me nowdays.
