How good are Creedence Clearwater Revival?

Where should I start with this band? :)

Danny Himself 10.23.2007 08:31 AM

They're very fucking good. Start with 'Green River', it's my favorite album of theirs.

Rob Instigator 10.23.2007 09:15 AM

I love Creedence, and their guitar riffs

Green River is my favorite song of theirs.

alyasa 10.23.2007 09:19 AM

I'll check it out, thanks for the heads up... :)

atari 2600 10.23.2007 09:37 AM

Green River is great, but I like Bayou Country, Cosmo's Factory, and Pendulum even more.

Letterman was a replay last night and Fogerty was the musical guest.
He and his band did "Long Dark Night > I Can't Take It No More" and it sort of sums up his new one, Revival. "Long Dark Night" is a real scorcher with CCR tone and "I Can't Take It No More" is a rave-up that sounds like it should have been thrown out. Oh well, they can't all be gems, I suppose. The album starts off with a bunch of slower, more skippable numbers. It's still a good album and one that finds Fogerty more comfortable than he's ever been going back to his roots.

fugazifan 10.23.2007 11:59 AM

WILLY AND THE POOR BOYS!!!!
and also green river
and bayou county
i have yet to hear cosmos factory, but i hear that its great

tesla69 10.23.2007 01:29 PM

Your parents' parents loved this band!

Hip Priest 10.23.2007 01:41 PM

Creedence were very good indeed.

Cosmo's Factory is my favourite, closely followed by Willy and the Poor Boys and Green River.

Here's how (some of) the board voted: http://www.sonicyouth.com/gossip/sho...ight=Creedence

atari 2600 10.23.2007 02:04 PM

How good are Creedence Clearwater Revival?

I like how you're writing the active "are" instead of the passive "were," alyasa.

Thanks for the link, Hip Priest, to the old thead; it may prove helpful. I still maintain that Pendulum is a very creative and too widely underrated CCR offering. Nice to see you around again. I'm watching UEFA Rangers vs. Barcelona right now live on ESPN2 (the deuce). It's a pity about your St. Louis Rams being winless so far this season.

Hip Priest 10.23.2007 02:12 PM

Thatnks. Yeah, the Rams' record looks a little embarrassing so far. I only get to see the highlights on the NFL website, so I don't really know if they've been a bit unlucky, or if they just suck. They went downhill last season after a good start.

I'm listening to the Champions League games on the radio.

I got seriously into Creedence through hearing Lookin' Out My Back Door and Run Through the Jungle on The Big Lebowski.

atari 2600 10.23.2007 02:16 PM

Yeah, a lot of people probably have gotten into them the same way.

The Dude: Come on, man. I had a rough night and I hate the fuckin' Eagles, man!

alyasa 10.23.2007 03:18 PM

Thanks, all the references are really informative... The poll is very enlightening... :)

atari 2600 10.23.2007 03:25 PM

The (also) winless Dolphins will be in London matching up against the resurgent NY Giants this Sunday, as you may know, Hip Priest.

5Against1 10.28.2007 02:41 AM

CCR wore flannel before flannel was cool.

EvdWee 10.28.2007 07:03 AM

love 'i heard it through the grapevine'

Everyneurotic 10.28.2007 01:41 PM

i love them, i need to get their albums.

atari is nuts, the second song he played on letterman was amazing, especially because no one expects fogerty to rip it up high speed style.

atari 2600 10.28.2007 01:42 PM

Long Dark Night is much better than I Can't Stand It No More, but to each their own...both are not all that great on the album though, they sounded much better live

and it is a treat to see and hear.

When Fogerty played the pre-game at the Super Bowl a few years ago, his voice sounded awful and he and his band didn't sound too hot either, so I'm glad he was so good on Letterman.

Bicorn Halfelven 10.29.2007 12:27 PM

"Pendulum" is the druggy, tipped out one...

Well, at least as druggy and tripped out as CCR ever got... it's my fave.

Savage Clone 10.29.2007 12:30 PM

I can't do Creedence.
Attempts were made, but it didn't take.

Bicorn Halfelven 10.29.2007 06:14 PM

CCR was my jam when i was a wee tot.

My parents had an old vinyl copy of Chronicle: 20 Greatest Hits and I wore that motherfucker out. I still have that copy and it skips like crazy.

I used to put on "Run Through The Jungle" on 45 and bounce around the living room like a child possessed. That whole collection is permanently ingrained upon my brain, and I still know all the lyrics to all of the songs...

Even though Fogerty's solo stuff never really did it for me, I still respect the man for all the enjoyment he gave me when I was a child, and whenever "I Put A Spell On You" comes on the radio, I go on a total nostalgia trip.

Same here. Even when I was kid, which was back in their day, they seemed like my parents' band.

I think kids today are becoming like my parents, and I am becoming, to kids today, like a rebellious teenager.

Rob Instigator 10.30.2007 07:47 AM

Mudhoney was Creedence with heroin.

the guitar

Everyneurotic 10.30.2007 10:12 AM

mudhoney was crap who had a lot of luck.

Bicorn Halfelven 10.30.2007 11:41 PM

Harsh, but for the most part, i have to agree.

gmku 10.30.2007 11:45 PM

Credence < Mudhoney < < < Nirvana

in their early days mudhoney probably copped heroin from creedence fans. then kurt cobain went all pop and shared his man.
$ 400 a day - beat that!

alyasa 10.31.2007 01:25 AM

Creedence < Pixies < Meat Puppets < (The) Melvins <<<< Nirvana

therealglenstyler 10.31.2007 05:13 AM

ugh, id rather tour manage billy corgan than take in a single lick of this hippy trash.

Rob Instigator 10.31.2007 08:36 AM

meat pupets suck major ass. Oh my god. fucking sped up country music. fucking SHIT. I hated them when they were first around and I hateed hearing their boring boring country rock opening up for the sonic youth in austin earlier this month.

Mudhoney rule all! mudhoney is a mix of stooges and creedence, an dthat is EXCELLENT to my ears

Bicorn Halfelven 10.31.2007 11:14 AM

There's a boot of Nirvana doing a cover of CCR's "Bad Moon Rising" out there.

I can post if anybody's interested.

I'm not so keen on their cover of CCR's "Bad Moon Rising."

Love their Meat Puppets covers and how they do Mudhoney's "The Money Will Roll Right In."

Their cover of The Cars' "My Best Friend's Girl" is downright embarrassing.

Meat Puppets? I think they're ok... Violent Femmes is another 'Americana' band I like... Very outre...

CCR hippy trash ? Are you serious ?

jetengine 11.01.2007 08:34 AM

'Bootleg' and 'Born On the Bayou' were great tracks. 'Have You Ever Seen the Rain' was probably their best out-and-out commercial single.

gmku 11.01.2007 11:34 AM

I like the Pixies. I don't care what any of you Pixies-haters say.

Rob Instigator 11.01.2007 11:59 AM

Pixies are very good stuff.
they rock. if ya wanna ROCK you oculd do much much worse.

Everyneurotic 11.01.2007 12:19 PM

mudhoney were like the dead boys mixed with the dead boys, it's just another garage band trying to be the yardbirds, only in the 80's. BUT they were in SEATTLE, and they released shit in SUB POP and they influenced KURT COBANG so they must be godheads!!!

i was a bit harsh, since i enjoy many of their songs but, they are not that special. rather listen to the mummies than mudhoney.

pixies are also overrated but they wrote and arranged a ton of amazing songs.

jetengine 11.01.2007 10:13 PM

Not sure why we're talking about The Pixies here all of a sudden, but I just wanted to admit that I've never understood all the hooplah over The Pixies--or Frank Black's solo career. As far as I'm concerned, they were just another one of those '80s/early '90s 'alternative' bands whose best tracks were the handful of commercial tracks--i.e., the singles--that could (supposedly) compete with or outshine the hits of the most respectable bestselling bands (The Cure, U2, INXS, The Smiths, REM, etc.). Take their 'classic' Doolittle album for example: 'Monkey Gone to Heaven', 'Here Comes Your Man' and maybe 'Wave of Mutilation' carry the entire record--the rest of the tracks you probably listened to once or twice and haven't returned to since. It's the same thing with Black's second solo record: it's just 'Headache' and 'Abstract Plain'--the two singles--and the rest is just immemorable third-rate filler.

Come to think of it, The Breeders were probably the best thing to ever come out of The Pixies...

This is horrible revisionist thinking. the pixies were fucking amazing and are still amazing and theuir first EP's and albums rock harder than anything "indie" these days. The breeders fucking suck shit compared to the pixies. DEBASER alone trumps anything the breeders ever put out.

this is what happens when a band is ripped off by EVERYONE to such an extent that the rip-offs garner more publcity and more airplay and people go back to hear the original and find it boring.
that's YOUR fault, not the pixies.
