poetry

So i'm wondering, if yer ever asked who's your fav poet, who would honestly say thurston moore? am i the only one?

SynthethicalY 11.03.2007 01:11 AM

He is good with playing with words. But in my opinion I would say Ginsberg, and Shakespeare.

syntax-free 11.03.2007 01:13 AM

i just honestly think we need more of the beats in this world. more people like thurston, who experiment with words and have no boundaries.

SynthethicalY 11.03.2007 01:16 AM

Well that is true. But any poet can be easily say they are not conforming to the same regulations as many. Just like other arts, it is all subjective.

sonicl 11.03.2007 01:38 AM

I had to read a ton of poetry when I was at school. Some of it (particularly the metaphysical) could easily have turned me of the form for life. I was quite taken with Robert Browning though.

you should then read anything in the american modernist/post-war & postmodern tradition since pound & williams i.e. zukofsky, oppen, thru to creeley and olson then l=a=n=g=u=a=g=e guys like larry eigner and then maybe look at susan howe for a true post-avant language based poetics.
thurston is a truly awful poet - amazing songwriter/musician, awful poet.
post-beat is a genre that should be left alone to die.

the ikara cult 11.03.2007 07:55 PM

No.

Danny Himself 11.03.2007 08:03 PM

Robert Frost or Poe, for me. T-bone blows at poetry, to be frank.

i disagree... with the thurston being an awful poet. i don't know how to back that up, but well, imo i think he's great. i dont know why...

See 'small flowers crack concrete' as evidence. The title was good, but little else.

k-krack 11.04.2007 12:31 AM

Thurston's "poetry" seems more like someone consciously trying to write poetry, and it sounds really really contrived. I love the man with all my heart, but it doesn't work. He should stick to writing lyrics, not poems and prose (yeh, there is a difference).

Shit that matters:
Ginsberg
Kerouac
Peter Orlovsky
Gregory Corso
Lawrence Ferlinghetti
(err, the entire Howls, Raps and Roars box set... it's 4 cds of beat poets and shit... great stuff)
Bukowski
Henry Rollins (more prose... but whatever)
Michael Ondaatje (same as Rollins... I HIGHLY recommend The Collected Works of Billy the Kid and Coming Through Slaughter)
Edgar Allen Poe (of course!)
I am pulling up blanks right now, but I'll be back!

You are crazy and stupid, which is a dangerous combination. Try and be stupid alone, it is not like being crazy too, but it's better than having the worst of both worlds.

intelligence isn't measured by personal taste of poetry or anything really, so go be superior somewhere else.

RanaldoNecro 11.06.2007 10:08 AM

Poetry isn't a subjective free for all that some make it out to be. There is the issue of timelessness. Every generation of poets seem to critique and hold under the light the classics. And many still stand. There are benchmarks.

If a poem, generation after generation causes people to be moved then it is worthy. If not then goodbye.

As far as 'renegade poets', I would side with an poetry establishment on this one. Advice: Take poetry courses at a repsected college. There is mountains to learn and presumably one or two geniuses a generation or one hundred years.

I'm not fond of Thurston lyrics ( or SY lyrics ) at all.
Still , the good thing is that they're not restricted in their music due to the fact that they can't write lyrics.
I've read Bob Mould saying that they ( Husker Du ) could have record much more songs , only they didn't because of their inability to write lyrics ( which is pitifull , IMO ).

GrungeMonkey 11.06.2007 12:16 PM

I think hes a good songwriter, and he sometimes makes really stupid sounding things sound cool, but sometimes he just sounds stupid.

Like Radical Adults Lick Godhead Style. The lyrics for that are just gay. A fuzzy peach teenage computer or some shit like that?

Interesting: Levy inspires Moore, Moore inspires Watkins. Everyone's a rip-off artist.

I hear alot of Elitisim in Thurston's lyrics. As in, the "whats that wierd kid doing in the corner'. It is just that it gets old quick. I undertand that SY are loyal to the avant-garde, different at all costs school of thought. That needs to exist.

It is just that sometimes the vital communication is missing.

I much prefer Beck's wordplay or Lee for that matter.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 11.06.2007 07:37 PM

I'd have to go with a rapper, man.
Aesop Rock of MF Doom, maybe.
