The Alblums that Defined ur teenage potheaddom
So your 16 17 years old, youre driving, you feel that tremedous freedom that comes with getting ur license, ur not jaded, just driving around listenin to tunes with your buddies, and ur gettin STONED.
What were those alblums that you and ur friends listened to countless times during this era? Doesnt have to be your personal favorite, they tend to be alblums that you like, but also all your friend like, being stoned makes for cooperation... Me: Wu Tang-Enter the 36 Chambers/Gza-Liquid Swords Black Sabbath-Sabbath Bloody Sabbath Slayer-Reign in Blood Black Flag-Damaged Led Zeppelin-Physical Grafitti Velvet Underground and Nico its funny, i was totally different from all my friends in my small massacusetts town, i wanted to be a musican or artist or writer or somethin like that, they all aspired to be construction workers, i mean ASPIRED, im only friends with two of them untill this day, ones by lifelong best friend. they went the way of townie and chinese resteraunt bars, i went the way of college, music, art, drugs, and more drugs, but some of the fondest memories of my life were driving around in my redneck alkie friend steve's beat up camry listening to music, laughing our heads off, and trying to go to parties and get laid and and all that typical highschool shit. Anyways, god i ramble a lot, your highschool stoner soundtracks? |
Didn't get a car till I was 19.
Didn't smoke pot till I was almost 21. But I took some pills and shit when I was 15-16, and I often listened to: Wire - Chairs Missing At the Drive In - Vaya Sunny Day Real Estate - Lp2 Sonic Youth - Confusion is Sex McLusky - Do Dallas Drive Like Jehu - Yank Crime I'd just kick back, pilled-out, and laugh. |
i fucking love drive like jehu, none of my friends did tho thats for damn sure
|
ditto wire (pink flag top 10 all time) ditto mclusky, some of my friend i think actually like ATDI after i told them they once opened for Rage
|
Yeah, I didn't smoke pot till college. Guess I just wasn't around it in high school or whatever. Anyways, back when I smoked a lot (not a lot, a lot... just more than usual for me) I would listen to Yo La Tengo and other real chill shit.

Beastie Boooooooooooooiiiiiiiiis

"Natural One" on repeat?

sister + daydream nation
nirvana (when i was still in school nirvana was our band of choice when we were, say, boxing in someone's car.) by all technical definitions i'm still a "teenager" (i'm writhing and gagging at the mention, try not to get too turned on by that) but seeing the fact that i've entered the adult world i don't consider myself to be so, really, my age is just a stigmatizing number that i have no control over. |
Never smoked in high school. Or drank.
But college was a different story. The music of choice on such an occasion was mostly a Stones concert boot, but sometimes the Ramones, Talking Heads, and the first Pretenders LP. |
Uhh well once my friends put on Nevermind when we were pissed, but I didn't take much notice of it (too busy talking). I do remember singing Range Life drunk and walking down a main road once. Everyone was staring.
But i'm still a teenager, so I can't pick any defining albums till i'm an adult. |
Dinosaur Jr - Bug
|
You know, I've never met anyone in real life who didn't like Jehu.
I agree: Pink Flag is one of the best albums of all time, but Chairs Missing/154 worked best for being pilled out. Haha. I got into Trout Mask Replica as a senior in high school, and my obsession continues to this day, but hearing the captain talk about .. things .. while I was heavily codeined is a memory that still resonates to this day.. |
Yeah man, Jehu rock.
|
u like ur pills eh, i was hooked on oxycontin for about a year and a half, i used to do cocaine and chew an oxy at the same time, when the line wore off the pill would be comin right on, i loved it, then the oxys got too expensive and i just caved it and became a junkie, then i got clean and ive been so for a long time
|
Depends on the kids I'm hanging out with. My best friends are into the same stuff that I am. Driving around listening to Arab on Radar, Chinese Stars, or other dancy noisy crap. My other friends listen to rap music like Lil Wayne, Cash Money, 36 Mafia, and Rick Ross. Some of them just listen to punk rock like Dead Kennedys and Misfits.
|
I also liked the one that went 'do do do do, bling do bling do bling do doooo doooo do do do do do do do do doooooo doooo dooooo do do do do do bling do'. You know, it was like, it was like, cool and chilled and stuff. All things that are, like, natural and everything.
|
It's the one that, like, starts with 'do' and finishes with a loud 'do do'. It's like, like, totally chilled and calm and peaceful and totally, like, defined peace and stuff.
|
I did not start smoking weed until I was 18-19.
|
Ive never taken any drugs beside Whiskey and paracetemol
But when i was 16 100 broken windows by Idlewild was a fine soundtrack to great weekday mornings at the busstop |

Lots of wu-tang here. Interesting, but not in a bad way.
|
Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising, Evol, Confusion is Sex, 1st record (in that order as far as stonedness, after those I hit my 20s).
Echo & the Bunnymen - Porcupine, Heaven Up Here Bauhaus - The Sky's Gone Out, In the Flat Field Pink Floyd - Meddle (which I'm not as into today), Piper at the Gates of Dawn (which I am) Sun Ra - Atlantis MC5 - Kick Out the Jams Black Sabbath - Master of Reality Metallica - Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets (which I'm not as into today) Velvet Underground - discography Killing Joke - Revelations Deep Six compilation (Green River, Melvins, pre-bloat Soundgarden, U-men, Malfunkshun, Skin Yard) Replacements - Let it Be Rolling Stones - Let it Bleed This Mortal Coil - It'll End in Tears Cocteau Twins - Treasure, Victorialand Motorhead - Ace of Spades Hawkwind - Space Ritual Lots of Grateful Dead bootlegs, which is kind of funny today R.E.M - Murmur Rain Parade - Explosions in the Glass Palace Dream Syndicate - Days of Wine and Roses Green on Red - Gas Food Lodging Soft Boys - Underwater Moonlight, Invisible Hits Led Zeppelin III (I was into the other albums pre-stoneage actually, but I didn't smoke pot until I was 18). For the most part I'm still totally into all of that stuff, except where otherwise noted. And I don't even smoke pot anymore. |

That's still teenage, though most 18-19 year olds don't think so. |
I nearly never listened to music while smoking pot as a teenager (it was usually outside of high school with a bunch of friends). Anyway back then I was mainly into heavy and thrash metal (Iron Maiden, Slayer, Metallica, Pantera and so on), not the best music to listen to when you're high.

Huh? I don't think any of those bands would have sold more than ten records if it weren't for weed! Seriously, without the sweet leaf, metal would never have even happened. |

Fair enough. None of the records you list were out when I was a teenager (and by teenager, I had to go to 18 & 19, because at 16 & 17 I didn't smoke pot yet and hadn't discovered Sonic Youth and broken out of the AOR FM radio box the smothered the world at the time.) |
