Noise Pedals

not sure if this is the right place on the board, but guitarists/people in bands what are some good pedals for making noise

i use a holy grail at the minute, with lots of gain and the pedals maxed out you can make some horrible noises but im looking for something for complete chaos, totally un-practical un listenable noise and i figure someone here will know the best way to do this

atsonicpark 11.16.2007 07:36 AM

Any pedal could be a "noise pedal" if you want it to be, I just started circuit bending a shitty pitchshifting "fat daddy" pedal and now it makes loud explosions or tiny fart sounds; amplified enough and it's completely effective.

Just open your pedal up, put some alligator clamps on the circuits and you should be good to go...

sarramkrop 11.16.2007 07:36 AM

Yeah, I too need some advice on how to re-create the cathedral of sound atmosphere. Any tips?

atsonicpark 11.16.2007 07:41 AM

Why, a cathedral reverb pedal, of course!

Get Maureen Tucker to record her drummers using Phil "Wall of Murder" Spector, and add Robin "Wall Of I Could Murder A Pint" Guthrie for added kudos. At the same time, call down the vibes of Joe Meek via a medium.

Alternately, you could do a Neubauten and record inside a bridge (cf. "Stahlversion").

atsonicpark 11.16.2007 08:09 AM

please never EVER "do a neubauten"

MellySingsDoom 11.16.2007 08:11 AM

atsonicpark - I'm "doing a Neubauten" right now! *bashes on metal and yells in off-key German*

atsonicpark 11.16.2007 08:13 AM

sarramkrop 11.16.2007 08:17 AM

Me too.

*Grabs a razor blade and scratches a mirror with it*

Inhuman 11.16.2007 10:51 AM

The first isn't a pedal, but try these:

I like ring modulators.

bit crushers like the Co Pilot FX Antenna are cool too, but I like ring mods better.

remember that guy on HC who had a gig with his holy stain and the guy who ran the bar told him that it sounded like they were playing in a church?

Holy grail can get you that cathedral sound, but most of yr dry signal is lost and theres a slight volume drop on the hall mode, which is quite annoying.

anyways, I love my Alesis Nanoverb. Its fucking weird, sometimes the reverb effects delay sometimes they oscilate, but I loose my dry signal and it sounds like fucking seawaves and seawaves full of noise.

king_buzzo 11.16.2007 11:04 AM

I dont believe in 'Noise' pedals though, just crank the amp up and use whatever you have...

Everyneurotic 11.16.2007 11:05 AM

try, for starters, doing unconventional things with a guitar to do noise.

king_buzzo 11.16.2007 11:32 AM

^Yep, i hate it when people just sit there and 'play' their pedals instead of their instruments. its kinda shit,.

Everyneurotic 11.16.2007 11:38 AM

i mean, don't get me wrong, playing with pedals is cool and all but people tend to rely on them too much. if you can find other ways to make noise without pedals not only it is more creative and less lazy but it also can enhance your playing with pedals.

scott v 11.16.2007 12:51 PM

uh yeah... derek bailey only used a volume pedal (or 2 when he did stereo sound) and amplification and relied mostly only his technique to create the most obtuse sounds possible from the instrument, however in the 70's he did use a something called the 19 string guitar, and modified 12 string epiphone acoustic with additional strings and detuned ones and some noise generating device called a Crackle Box created by Michel Wascicz.

SugarMountain 11.16.2007 02:50 PM

oh i agree, i have one of those big Dunlop capos and it doesnt really work aswell as my shubb as a capo but i found if i use to back end as a slide, but past the neck so its over the pick ups with the holy grail on you can get some disgusting sounds

king_buzzo 11.16.2007 05:18 PM

yeah the holy grail has some ear piercing feedback skills, when used with other shit ofcourse.

what other stuff do you have?

GrungeMonkey 11.16.2007 05:26 PM

MXR Blue Box.

as much as i love it, no, you cant use it by its own. well you can, but on with your amp cranked; and it sounds fucking droney. But its pretty low noise, theres like no hum... turned on after my 3 disortions it takes out all the noise. it can be quite cool sometimes.

Lots and lots of delay.

CHOUT 11.17.2007 12:06 AM

Mid Fi Electronics Glitch Computer
kinda like a crazier blue box, and can make video-gamey explosions

definitely delay, with feedback cranked. electro harmonix deluxe memory man is a great analog delay that you could blow speakers with when it self-oscillates

also the electro harmonix poly chorus - it has a feedback knob that you can use on any setting to get pretty crazy

king_buzzo 11.17.2007 05:07 AM

Death by audio pedals, as well.

fugazifan 11.17.2007 08:05 AM

delay...
cheap digitech delay pedal. i make loops and then change the speed. play around with distortion pedals.
to get a cool wind/sci fi vacum cleaner sound-lots of reverb- wah- distortion (check out my bands song cold words.)
but live the best noise is by simply physically attacking my amp with a guitar. it does wonders....

SugarMountain 11.17.2007 08:09 AM

really like the female singer in your band fugazifan, reminds me of someone but i cant put my finger on it, Ill add you up right away from my bands account

atsonicpark 11.17.2007 08:17 AM

so uh.. what's the most effects pedals anyone on here has ever chained together and turned on at the same time ?

SugarMountain 11.17.2007 08:18 AM

i only own 2 lol, oh and i just bought a tuner so 3 i guess

thanks:cool:
the comparisons that we have heard to her voice are pj harvey and portishead.
i dnont listen to either band to know if they are right or not.
but thanks.
i believe that i have played with 6 pedals at once. not sure how impressive that is though...

put a contact mic on a bit of old metal and your amp on full volume then hit the metal with another bit of metal, thats good noise.

loopers are more fun than delays, if you get like a loop, 2 crazy fuzzes, a delay and an ebow you should be able to get really cool shit.

yeah i know, but loopers cost a lot of money, and i dont have any....
someday....

king_buzzo 11.17.2007 12:22 PM

yeah, i'd like a looper...

mmm does a korg Kaoss mini pad have looping?

SugarMountain 11.17.2007 01:13 PM

PJ Harvey might be it, bit of Patti maybe aswell
i dunno, either way i liked it

i second this entirely

avantgarde1 11.17.2007 04:38 PM

once my friend plugged up my phase shifter, delay, grunge, wah pedals to his reverb, delay (shitty one), some metal distortion pedal and a few other things i don't remember. it was about 12 pedals in all, and then we looped it on my other delay pedal, turned everything on all the way up, including the amp, and it was undescribable. we blew the amp though, only lasted about 30 seconds. still, it was pretty awesome, but totally undecipherable.

mine was 5 plus a multi running seven effects.

I notice though it like running only two pedals at most and relying on my guitar skills to make real noise.

jonathan 11.19.2007 12:45 AM

I'm glad the Holy Grail is getting appreciated.

Maybe 12.

I'm sure in the future I'll beat that number.
