Christmas

I hate Christmas presents, but i like Christmas.
I would also like generic Girl-present ideas if anyone has them

luxinterior 12.01.2007 01:37 PM

Let's see, I get at least three different kinds of body lotion each Christmas from people who don't know what to get me (usually my step-family). I never use it. I also tend to get gift certificates to places that are nowhere near where I live, which is a pain. Also from my step-family.

the ikara cult 12.01.2007 02:01 PM

are these good presents in general?

Toilet & Bowels 12.01.2007 03:00 PM

there'a shop opposite the british museum that sells woolen hats, scarves and gloves etc and they come in really cool designs and colours, whenever i have a girlfriend at christmas i pick them up something from there, and it seems to be a success, although if they knew it was a thing i always do they might not be so happy about it.

I think that would be a better gift than body lotion. I really don't think people realize just how much body lotion girls receive at Christmas.

When I use body lotion, it's the kind that is actually supposed to make your skin feel smoother, rather than just making it smell like melons or coconuts or whatever the hell else.

Not really. If you know what a girl's favorite shop is, a gift certificate there is always nice, but don't just pick a shop for no reason. Body lotion and gift certificates to girly places are generally thoughtless presents.

I was once given the book Memoirs of a Geisha (step-family again) because the person knew I liked to read. And so picked a book out for me that I had no interest in reading. They made absolutely no effort to find out what books I would actually like to read.

Kind of like the time I received Forrest Gump as a gift. Just because I like movies. That was a terrible gift.

All I'm saying is, try to let go of that "Because you're a girl, I'm getting you this" notion if you are really wanting to get the person a good gift. Most of the gifts I receive at Christmas are those "Because I'm a girl" gifts that I never use.

atsonicpark 12.01.2007 05:27 PM

Let's see, I got my girlfriend a really hot brick red bra with black lace and black mesh, FINAL FANTASY FABLES: Chocobo's Tales, a Wii lunchbox, a Mario shirt, Excel Saga DVD box set, and Dragon Quest: Rocket Slime.

ha ha as soon as i started reading this i arrived to the same conclusion that you post and i imagined if they ever get together & compare notes you might have to go into hiding for some time.

pantophobia 12.01.2007 07:31 PM

pillows, blankets, quilts and that sort are good, especially hand made stuff in general, especially something that is utilitarian instead of something that is only ornate like art which is nice, but looking at a painting or sculpture won't keep them warm

how many girls are we talking about? if it's just one, and it's important, generic will only get you into deep shit. the more personal, the better.

if it's many women and you don't give a shit-- i can't help you in that department. ask a chick.

SynthethicalY 12.01.2007 07:37 PM

I hate christmas, but if you want present ideas, take her to go eat, and give her maybe a ring or a poster of her favorite band or something she likes but doesn't have.

Now floaty, don't say things like that, you will make Derek jealous. cake and I are strictly mother-adopted daughter.

But it's true, I am going to spend the holiday with her and her family, and I am SO EXCITED!

I've never been allowed to meet parents before!

I wish you guys knew how much I loved The Grinch; not the story, per se, but the actual Grinch, himself.

He does good work.

dale_gribble 07.17.2012 11:32 PM

^i agree, he would win against that klaus guy

Starcat 07.18.2012 01:52 AM

Okay big-man. I want an unlimited dataplan for my phone, a sweet PA, at least 50 pairs of black 29x34 jeans, an original Daydream Nation record, a shitton of guitar pedals, and a kitten

Nefeli 12.11.2012 10:51 AM

too much loling to me, for bumping a xmas thread right now. LOL

cannot 'feel' it anymore. its been at least 4 years now.
and now i m also what? and this close to start getting irritated by people posting all the time about it.

LOL

funny thing is that my mate has his place decorated over a month now.
we can see outdoors and he has all these beautiful lights and shit
and i told him 'damn aint feeling it again, even though i see this almost everyday here'.
he said, 'me too, i USED to like them, i dont anymore'.

Genteel Death 12.11.2012 03:39 PM

None of us at home are going home for xmas this year, and besides, one of my flatmate is from India and is not used to celebrating this festivity, so we'll be spending it together. My bf, who's also from India, might be able to fly from Bangalore to London for a few days, so it should turn out to be a good one.

Rob Instigator 12.11.2012 04:00 PM

Bangalorax?

Genteel Death 12.11.2012 04:06 PM

He spent the past month in your neck of the woods for work and in early December.

Genteel Death 12.11.2012 04:20 PM

I need to check if he dumped me already though.

Rob Instigator 12.11.2012 04:25 PM

Last night we had Finals Mania at Univ. of Houston. The Library Administration with help from the University, puts on a one night event to give the kids some fun and some food for studying during the week before Final Exams.

About 1600 students got free snacks, fresh made pancakes, with syrup, butter, apples, strawberries, and whipped cream if they wanted, plus coffee, hot cocoa, orange juice, water, etc.
It was a lot of fun. UH is a very ethnically and nationally diverse campus, with students from everywhere in Asia, Africa, south America, Europe, etc.
There were several students who had no idea what pancakes with toppings were, and looked confused as they made their way around.

One guy, who I believe was from Pakistan, said as he held up his plate for more strawberries in syrup, "I love your American food!"

Hilarious.

Our President, Renu Khator, is a bad-ass lady, originally from India, and always comes to all functions. she was very put off when I asked if she wanted butter on her pancakes, asking, "You put butter on your pancakes?" to which my boss shook his head as if he too did not like butter on pancakes. I told her "don;t listen to him. he's from England!"

I love butter on pancakes.

It was a lot of fun. But I did not get much sleep last night.

floatingslowly 12.11.2012 04:26 PM

If he's told you Bangalore is anywhere near Texas, you should be worried.

floatingslowly 12.11.2012 04:28 PM

Rob: in Oz, they use ice cream instead.

agreed.

Bangalore, while I know is an actual geographic place, sounds like a hip hard-gay lounge in the Montrose neighborhood of Houston!

Genteel Death 12.11.2012 04:45 PM

I don't even think he can fathom the idea of American cuisine to begin with.

It'd sound more like that if I was more predatory in my own neighbourhood.

90 mins to go until I get to enjoy 12 days off and I don't have to think about global rent payment processes...I am going to try and get to the guitar store before it closes tonite and buy myself a Boss loop pedal for my distortion bass - the best part is the East Village really feels like a village for about 48 hours around the 25th, there is hardly anyone around and those who remain are actual residents; the tourists and students are not to be seen.

ha ha, but seriously, hm, our plan is to stay away from everyone else's plans, have a few drinks, make a fire like every day around here, watch some non-christmas movies (polanski's "repulsion"), eat non-christmas food (maybe make a pizza?), listen to non-christmas music and definitely not freeze. maybe i'll install some gutters.

it's a really enjoyable time when everyone is away cancelling each other out.

Nefeli 12.25.2014 03:02 AM

as i ve been seeing it, every last year was better.

my highlight and honestly i ve been looking forward for it more than ever, will be family gathering in few hours at my parents. well, my brother is in London.
