Can I have some love for the Captain?!
I mean, come on! Safe as Milk! Wow! Trout Mask Replica! Where would we be without it.
I cannot imagine traveling through life without my captain. Can you? |
Uncle Beefy. He doesn't come around as much as Uncle Willie (Nelson), but he's always a welcome presence.
|
Captain Beefheart is my favorite musician of all time, as you might be aware. I own everything he's had any part in......
That last ep I did was clearly a Beefheart tribute and the next album I do will try to out-Trout Mask Trout Mask. "Ice Cream for Crow" and "Lick My Decals Off, Baby" are two of the finest albums ever recorded. |
I thought you meant this captain:

doc at the radar station, the first ever "post punk" album perhaps. Dirty Blue Gene is the best beefheart song.
|
i had no idea you were so into beefheart? ive loved him since i found trout mask replica in my dads record collection when i was 15, and thats when i rarely would listen to anything that wasnt at least in some way related to punk rock.
|
i have only trout mask - safe to say i think it is fantastic - i have been meaning to check out others...
|
I need to get me some of his studio albums. I only have a few compilations of his. which don't overally flow that well. Still a good listen though.
|
John Peel said it best.
"If there has ever been such a thing as a genius in the history of popular music, it's Beefheart…I heard echoes of his music in some of the records I listened to last week and I'll hear more echoes in records that I listen to this week." |
i was hoping this would be dedicated to captain morgan's
but i'll settle for captain beefheart |
One of my finest finds in a Goodwill (charity/thrift store) was a promo copy of Mirror Man for 53 cents.
|
53 cents! Man.
I've loved the Captain since around 87 when I picked up a TMR LP reissue on a whim. I'd just traded some records for cash at this record store, and they had TMR propped up on display on the counter. Just one copy. Used, I think. I took one look at the cover and just knew it was an album for me. The manager, who was kind of a jerk, said, "Ah, I just knew you'd go for something weird." Well, I'm glad I did. I'd heard of Doc and Ice Cream before, when they first came out, but I was buying so much other shit then that they kind of slipped away from me. The Captain's easily in my top 5 favorites of all time. |
I don't have a complete catalog. Still missing Unconditionally Guaranteed, Clear Spot, and Mirror Man. How do they compare with the rest?
|
clear spot is the one i am listening now. first album is heard from him. some quality guitar songs on it: big eyed beans from venus, clear spot, nowadays a woman...
the cd is in combination with the spotlight kid. |
Mirror Man is all I have on vinyl and I like it. Its recorded live in LA in '65, kind of a blues jam record with cool vocals by the Captain.
|
Wow, 65. I didn't realize it was that early.
|
Me neither
|
I actually have lick my decals off, baby on vinyl. $5.
|
sure...love...here you go...love...love u captain wherever you are...
i wonder how many threads we've had about beefheart...an adequate amount or an inadequate amount? |
i thought this was about captain jack...

well, not really.
beefheart is the best, trout mask replica is the greatest album ever made. just ignore his '74 releases... |
soem of the riffs on those are cool, if nothing else.
UPON THE MI OH MYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY. |
