The Most Underated Bands

the overated thread was an interesting enough read apart from the abusive posts,

anyway id rather talk about bands that dont get enough credit:

Can
the birthday party
wire
spacemen 3

theres bound to be loads more it was just these bands that first came to mind,

Inhuman 03.23.2006 12:06 PM

Good call! I would have to go with:

The Hospitals
The Flying Luttenbachers
Sun Ra
WRAITHS
USA IS A MONSTER

twistal 03.23.2006 12:53 PM

battles
the rolling stones

Rob Instigator 03.23.2006 01:11 PM

My list of underrrated bands goes as this

Phish
Morphine
The Misfits

all these acts wrote and played some fucking amazing music but noone seems to give them any respect. a lot of people listen to them, but culturally they seem to make no mark.

Hip Priest 03.23.2006 01:14 PM

Good thread.

Current: The Duke Spirit.

Past: Gaye Bykers on Acid, Fields of the Nephilim, The Bambi Slam. And, although they are very well known, I always feel that Creedence Clearwater Revival are ignored somewhat.

They never seem to get mentioned anywhere, apart from by me

screamingskull 03.23.2006 01:17 PM

ummm, how about sonic youth, they are pretty underrated by everyone who isnt us.

nicfit 03.23.2006 02:49 PM

Test it!

A couple more, but only if I may:

Japan were a superior pop band who've never got the acclaim they deserve, and neither has their former frontman, Davd Sylvian, who's been making slightly experimental music solo for over 20 years. His 'Speaking With The Shaman' 12" in particular has inspired a lot of New Age type music without ever being credited. ANd he can still bang out the odd cracking song when he wants, eg 'The Scent of MAgnolia'.

soapbars 03.23.2006 03:49 PM

a few more bands

six by seven,
curve,
lush,
frank black and the catholics,

Who are Six by Seven? I don't think I've even heard of them, which could go some way to prove your point.

krastian 03.23.2006 03:51 PM

I'll def. vote for Phish.

Glice 03.23.2006 04:35 PM

I loved Six by Seven on their first album, but then met them, and they were arseholes, and I can't listen ever since.

Stony Sleepand Urusei Yatsura get my underrated vote.

Sonic youth will eventually be in the RnR Hall of Fame, so those of you who think they are underrated will soon be eating your words.

Currently underrated...

The Feelies, the Beatles,

Formerly underrated and now perfectly rated... The Ramones, unfortunately only got their due respect after the deaths of Joey, Dee Dee and Johnny. The only band I know where all the drummers are still alive and everyone else is dead. Go figure.

Signpost 03.23.2006 04:41 PM

My small list:
Swans
Angels Of Light
Labradford
Six Finger Satellite
Oneida

They've done that Walk of Fame handprints thing already, haven't they? Don't know too much about that though.

Surely, you are not serious.

I see tons of pseudo-punks walking around in Misfits garb in my town. Hell, even Sam Goody carries Misfits backpacks and shit. Terrible Band. Horribly OVERrated.

I agree with gutarpro....ignore the stupid kids wearing the shirts and focus on the music. A lot of them prob. just like the shirts because they have skulls and shit on them. They fucking rock. I've never heard them to be "rated" high anyway. This thread is total specualtion based on what ya like.

HaydenAsche 03.23.2006 06:03 PM

I guess but to say the are underrated is ignorant. Kids who've never even heard them say they like them. They are about as popular as the fucking Ramones.

truncated 03.23.2006 07:09 PM

Perhaps not underrated, but underappreciated (as previously corrected by Atari haha)

Public Enemy

And I don't think Grandaddy gets enough play.

That's all I have to say on the under/overrated issue, for the rest of eternity.

HaydenAsche 03.23.2006 07:10 PM

More people should listen to Modest Mouse and the Unicorns.

You mean there's not enough Modest Mouse fans already?

I don't see what's so special about them...

HaydenAsche 03.23.2006 07:33 PM

Well, I mean pre-Bad News Modest Mouse.

The First 3 Albums were amazing.

They've recently broken up. I think I can YSI those albums but I suspect that might be against the rules.

Stirling:
Coupla nice choices there!
I have over 50 Legendary Pink Dots and related releases; they are fantastic.
I also have all the Felt LPs; Maurice Deebank's guitar has literally brought me to tears.

stirling 03.23.2006 10:40 PM

I don't have much by either of them. :(
Got to see LPD about a year ago, though.

DJ Shadow's amazing. If you're into him, you should check out Sixtoo. He pretty much takes the whole beatmaking process a step further.

Savage Clone 03.23.2006 10:50 PM

I've seen LPD about 8 times since 1991; they are incredible. I liked them a lot as a live group when they had Ryan Moore with them, and had real drums. My avatar pic was actually taken when I got to open for them during the time I spent playing guitar in a friend's band, strangely enough.

Flen flyys 03.24.2006 01:11 AM

Throwing Muses

Rob Instigator 03.24.2006 10:22 AM

You guys do understand that UNDERRATED does not mean lots of people do not like them? It means that they are not held up to the same lvel of esteem as they deserve.

The Misfits have many fans, but nowhere near the Ramones. The Misfits are seen as a cartoon because oif the stupid fucking comback those losers did. The original Misfits were singular, nothing like them ever nothing ever like them.
