I Wanna Talk About How Awesome Demonlover Is

out of everything SY has released in a weird sense this is my favorite. it makes me wish they'd do more original film scoring type things and it really makes me wish they'd do more stuff like that in general. what're yr thoughts? do you agree or disagree? discuss.

fluxequalsrad 02.07.2008 10:05 PM

disagree... sounds like a through away. I mean all the SYR's are in the same vein ,...but so much better.

avantgarde1 02.07.2008 10:43 PM

ugh no way. syr1 is the only one i even like, cept for the goodbye 20th century one.

barnaclelapse 02.07.2008 11:20 PM

It is pretty good...great for writing...but I don't know if I'd call it my favorite.

mil_pl 02.08.2008 05:20 AM

i don't like syr's except syr:1, they sound very weird especially syr3: invito al cielo... no sense noise nothing more.

sonicl 02.08.2008 05:22 AM

Expect, at some point, an SYR boxset (or something like that) containing all of SY's soundtrack work.

toxic johnny 02.08.2008 06:21 AM

I'm very fond of the Demonlover soundtrack... nice to see that it's getting some kudos...

My faves are:

Electric Noisefield and Teknikal Illprovisation

greenlight 02.08.2008 07:11 AM

i love sy when they do impro/instrumental stuff. Demonlover is great (espec. superdead), so Melbourne Direct, so Silver Session, so many other instrumental tracks from their catalog are.

avantgarde1 02.08.2008 02:57 PM

hell yeah! glad to see soem other people share my opinion. i think a box set would be awesome. maybe we'd finally get soem of the stuff from things behind the sun.

andrei 02.09.2008 02:05 AM

One moment i was scared. I thought you are talkin' about the movie:D
Yeah, the soundtrack is pretty awesome. In a improv/instrumental SY top i think i'd put it second, after Silver Session and on same position with Kali Yug Express 10" which is bassicaly the same session, if i remember right.

avantgarde1 02.09.2008 04:38 PM

i thought the kali yug stuff was from the sessions for things behind the sun? either way i agree w/ youjust in a different order: demonlover, kali yug (although i only have a burned copy) then silver sessions

andrei 02.10.2008 01:16 AM

You might be right about Kali Yug. I assumed that cause Move Away is bassically a variation of Coca Neon Kamera Sutra, but as far as i remember the last two tracks. Kali Yug appeared on Things Behind the Sun

ruben 09.22.2008 02:32 PM

Maybe a bit stupid to comment on this old topic. But i picked up a copy of demonlover today (is it out of print? if not, the guy from the record guy definitely made me pay too much). And after one listen, i absolutely love it. For me this album is way better then some of the syr's.

noisereductions 09.22.2008 02:39 PM

yeah it's OOP. I still dnt have an original copy, because I've never seen it at a decent price. It's been on my wantlist for years. psh.

greedrex 09.22.2008 02:49 PM

it's a nice subdued one. i absolutely LOVE the film.

o'connor 09.22.2008 03:23 PM

i didn't know it was out of print. as far as i know it was only available as a french import. i got mine years ago for about $20

noisereductions 09.21.2012 07:32 PM

I wish more of the soundtrack was like "Move Away".... and I'd like to see a legit reissue with outtakes and no bonus tracks by other bands.

the ikara cult 09.21.2012 07:41 PM

Its not your favourite, come on now. But it is very enjoyable, its one of the things I got for Christmas when my parents didnt know what to get me

logicalharm 09.21.2012 08:00 PM

Am I the only one that really loves Control Freak? It has this defeated, rainy airport feeling to it mm

nah far from favorite. My wife got it for me for xmas one year actually, yr right. But There's some interesting ideas. Its' far too brutal for me. But if more sounded like "Move Away" or the stuff they did for Things Behind The Sun, I'd probably love it. --> The Destroyed Room is a favorite album of mine, so I'd like to hear the supposed soundtrack boxset they planned.

Faringold 09.22.2012 06:56 AM

There's a section of documentary about the making of this on YouTube. Does anyone know the origin of that footage? TV?

I believe that it was on the French version of the DVD if I remember right.

silverfreepress (sdasher) 09.22.2012 10:33 AM

Went to the premiere of this, one of them anyway at Lincoln Center. T-Dog, Kim, and Jim were there. It was in this theatre with massive red curtains. Just huge amounts of fabric, so much you could have made a fabric bridge across the Hudson.
Such a jarring movie. I remember Chole naked playing playstaion right?? This and being highly unnerved.

Its quite funny having a CD that starts with "Move Away" and then ends with a song by Sepultura. It was a good present.

As far as clueless Sonic Youth Xmas presents go, my dad got me the Japanese import version of EJSTNS, which has no extra tracks at all, and is my least favourite SY album. My sister also got me one of those awful "framed signature" things of EJSTNS. Its still sat down the side of my bed, i cant bring myself to put it on the wall...

love all the soundtrack and instrumental outtakes post 2000: Demonlover, Kali Yug ep (best Sonic present ever?), the "noho-furniture-sessions" parts of Destroyed Room, Syr9. Made In Usa has good tracks too, though I'm not so into all the versions of that upbeat throwaway rockish song.

I've said it before, but the soundtrack boxset title and artwork should be an extension of Destroyed Room, with collages using photos of hotel rooms trashed by bands more debauched than SY.

Never saw any of the movies though, or figured out where to listen to the Things Behind the Sun tracks. I wanna check out that Stage and Screen CD from Lee, who has heard it?

greedrex 09.23.2012 11:41 AM

yeah and if you haven't seen the movie, go watch it right now : excellent.

hi all btw.

Genteel Death 09.23.2012 02:02 PM

Yep, the movie is good, never heard the soundtrack as a record. I think it's probably started my interest in the dark side of current French filmmakers more than any other.

I donīt have Kali Yug, all the others I have and I love them all (also Made in Usa)! Never seen any of those films. But I watched the entire Goo last weekend and I really enjoyed it (also the music). The end of Mote was quite a shock, never saw that part of autopsy in the back of it before!

hypertonic 09.25.2012 08:20 PM

I saw this on a lark one night randomly a friend who knew i loved SY told me there was a free screening at a college here in town and I kinda snuck in.. Excellent choice too. I had chills watching it there alone.. Move Away is a great track. Love the movie. Definitely recommended.
