I admit it... I am a vinyl fetishist!

It's true. It's absurd. I'm absurd. I realized today that as much as I like music, what I like more is purchasing music on LP.

I bought some LPs today and decided to make note of how I feel during the process. I approach it all with the same dumb wonder as a kid on Christmas. It's magical for me, buying an LP, opening it up at home, looking at it, putting it on the turntable, feeling amazed that the whole set-up actually works and makes music come out of the speakers.

What's wrong with me? How will I ever overcome this addiction?

Crumb's Crunchy Delights 02.14.2008 07:35 PM

friends? alcohol? sex? chocolate? suicide?

I'm a vinyl freak as well, I like the feel of it.

Crumb's Crunchy Delights 02.14.2008 07:41 PM

and if you take the first letter of each of those words and rearrange them, it spells "s.t.u.p.i.d."

gmku 02.14.2008 07:45 PM

Really? I only get "a.s.s. f.c."

I would trade in all my CDs for three or four really great LPs.

Everyneurotic 02.14.2008 09:14 PM

got into a 12 step program, gmku?

gmku 02.14.2008 09:41 PM

That would mean giving up this habit? No. No way.

Everyneurotic 02.14.2008 09:44 PM

i thought that was the point of this thread.

step one: admitting you have a problem.

gmku 02.14.2008 09:45 PM

step two: admitting you're okay with having this problem.

Everyneurotic 02.14.2008 09:48 PM

you misunderstand me, carry on with your lp frensy (sp?).

gmku 02.14.2008 09:51 PM

Oh, I understand you perfectly. You're trying to take away my LPs, aren't you! You want me to give up this vinyl thing so YOU can have my LPs. I get it, I get it.

Everyneurotic 02.14.2008 09:59 PM

i do feel vinyl collectors make for an expensive effort to buy lps, sure i'd like people to stop being so anal about buying things right away.

but nah, you have decades of advantage against me so why fight it? at least you really listen to your vinyls.

gmku 02.14.2008 10:03 PM

I listen to them. I'd like to sleep with them, but my wife would think that's going to far.

The collector mentality--I can't really speak against it, because I think I understand it. At the same time, I'm not a hardcore collector in the sense of collecting something because of its rarity or value. I collect, or more precisely just buy, the LPs I buy because of what they're worth to me, what they mean to me. But never because I want to be the collector with the most cake.

Everyneurotic 02.14.2008 10:06 PM

you know? i get a lot of admiration shit from people because i have boris' vein, they tell me how lucky i am and how much money i would get if i'd try to sell it but i bought it because i love boris, the art is amazing and the album is pretty fucking cool. it's rare, so what? other people have it and you can download it.

gmku 02.14.2008 10:12 PM

Yeah, that's the way i feel. I have to love the thing, otherwise it's worthless to me.

that said, though, I do some weird shit sometimes like buy different versions of an album just because there are different versions. Again, though, it's not because I'm going to re-sell them or because I want bragging rights or anything, but because for whatever reason, I'm interested in it for itself. It's like loving a work of art or a book. Possessing it, having it on the wall or the bookshelf, for some reason is meaningful.

gmku 02.14.2008 10:14 PM

Case in point--today I had the choice between an everyday 70s repressing of Dark Side of the Moon for around 10 bucks or the new anniversary edition for more than twice as much. Because I knew the new pressing included all the cool extras, like posters and stuff, I had to have that one. I wouldn't have been happy with the other "object" even though it has the same music.

Everyneurotic 02.14.2008 10:17 PM

well, everybody is different. i for once, have bought the lp even if i had an album already on tape or cd.

Alex's Trip 02.14.2008 10:23 PM

In my zany world of ipods on mp3s and what not, is it worth it to go out and buy a turntable?

I've been thinking about it for a long time, but it just doesn't seem worth the trouble. I won't even have the opportunity to buy that much vinyl anyway.

I want vinyl, everyone says it sounds way better, but the money and the availability make it hard to go out and buy it. Especially since I would only be able to buy vinyl about 3-5 times a year, unless I got it online, but at that point I say, fuck it, I'll add on to my CD collection instead.

Unless someone can 'splain why it is worth it, I think I'll stick with what I got. Low compression mp3s and wavs.

ha ha. you don't have to get anything just cos everybody says so. that's just silly.

i think mp3s sound like shit no matter how you cut it. wavs are ok, they are like cds. but vinyl is sweeter than cd in my opinion, and i tend to favor enjoyment over convenience. in other words, i'd rather pursue the hot girl who is hard to get over the chick with low self esteem issues who puts out easy. at this point i mean, having sampled both ends of the spectrum :D

Everyneurotic 02.14.2008 11:02 PM

i don't buy vinyl because it's better or collectable or fashionable, it's because i love it, i have been buying vinyl for like 15 years now, but not exclusively.

Alex's Trip 02.14.2008 11:03 PM

I don't want it because everyone says it sounds better. I want it because supposedly it sounds better.

I don't think mp3s sound bad, but I guess I don't have the vinyl reference. One of my friends has a program that rips CDs uncompressed, and goes through the disc several time correcting any ripping errors, and he has some $2000 speakers, pretty nice stuff. But what I got works for me, so I guess I'll probably stick with it until I see the light of the superior sound of vinyl.

Norma J 02.15.2008 01:07 AM

I love vinyl, but I worry about it too much and it's less accessable, so I opt for Compact Disc most of the time.

uhler 02.15.2008 01:56 AM

i like vinyl, but i already purchased like 100 cds before i had my first record of my own, so it would've been silly to stop buying cds then. now i buy cds and vinyl. i haven't downloaded much lately though.

That's probably good if you stick to CDs. If you have to ask, you'll never understand.

I consider many of my CDs just placeholders until I can find good LP copies.

I like finding neat shit inside the vinyl. I love when bands put crzy shit in the vinyl packaging. like godspeed you black emperor's first album. or the new deerhoof that has all sorts of cool prints in it.
I am right there with you man. buying vinyl feels like buying art. buying CD's feel like buying product.

I have 6 crates worth packed in the top of my closet, never to be listened to again.

good times.
