the sopranos aint a movie, but if it were to count, it wud be my favorite BY FAR! i was sickly obsessed witht that show since i tuned in season 2, i own all 7 dvd sets, watched every episode religiously, watched all the special features, ive read all the critques of the show, and truly believe that tony soprano is the most captivating fictional charachter of modern times. people bitched about the last episode, but smart people knew that i show as brilliant as the sopranos could not go out with an infuriating and brilliant ending (the people who paid attention knew what happened anyways, *cough bang cough*).

m1rr0r dash 03.20.2008 11:18 PM

exactly.

pbradley 03.20.2008 11:25 PM

I could only watch a part of the Sopranos through Netflix but what I saw really dug. Sucked that I couldn't keep it coming.

Cantankerous 03.20.2008 11:25 PM

i looove the sopranos

davenotdead 03.20.2008 11:40 PM

never watched the sopranos.... Mean Streets is so boss... Godfather is possibly the greatest flick of all time

davenotdead 03.21.2008 01:46 AM

i did not like boondock saints. so many people i know love it. so many film students... are you irish/catholic kegmama?

why else would anyone be that into gangster movies...?

this reminds me of two things:

1. i like that scene in scarface with the colombians
2. i still haven't bought a chainsaw yet

LifeDistortion 03.21.2008 01:53 AM

I've said it before I'll say it again "Brotherhood" > "The Sopranos", just my opinion.

Honorable mentions: "The Untoucables"
Kubrick's "The Killing"
oh, and a Hong Kong movie that came out last year or two called "Exiled", really good.

davenotdead 03.21.2008 01:55 AM

Willem was the lone bright spot

Scarface
Lock, Stock And Two Smoking Barrells
The Business
Sonatine
Brother

Never liked Goodfellas or The Godfather(s).

mangajunky 03.21.2008 10:01 AM

1) The Public Enemy - the definitive Cagney gangster flick, so intense that a disclaimer was added to it and it was edited for re-release because it was "pre-code"

2) Bullet in the Head - John Woo's masterpiece about friendship and betrayal set against a backdrop of 60's Vietnam

3) Goodfellas - so entertaining, funny, shocking and amazing that it's based on real people

4) The Killer - Woo and Chow Yun Fat in a film that shows that sometimes the cops and the gangsters aren't too different from each other

5) Angels With Dirty Faces - a couple of punks grow up together and one takes the fall for the other which sends him down the path of a life of crime while his buddy becomes a priest. Lots of feelings of honor, responsibility, and the intro of the Bowery Boys

6) Hard Boiled - The Pinnacle of John Woo's style. Things blowing up, doves flying, paper cranes, and a hospital full of babies in the midst of a crazy firefight.

7) White Heat - "Top of the world, ma!" Cagney is the ultimate mama's boy and a complete fucking psycho. You never know when he's going to snap.

8) The Godfather - I feel obligated to mention this. Leave the gun, take the cannolis.

9) The Maltese Falcon - I feel like I didn't give Bogart enough love on this list. This movie is all-out fun. A colorful cast and an asshole protaganist that just oozes cool.

10) Little Caesar - here's the reason why everyone thinks of Edward G. Robinson as the image of a gangster. He's totally badass.

honorable mention: most everything directed by Ringo Lam, or Johnny To. Dozens of films starring Simon Yam. Most everything by Seijun Suzuki.
Be sure to check out A Better Tomorrow 1-3, Full Contact,
Branded to Kill, Snatch, Lock Stock, Casino, Mean Streets, Pistol Opera.

And don't forget that most Samurai films have heavy gangster elements especially Lone Wolf and Cub, and Zatoichi.

mangajunky 03.21.2008 12:16 PM

I totally forgot to add Leon: The Professional. That would be up towards the top.

krastian 03.21.2008 12:34 PM

^I love that movie.

I was going to put that but I didn't think it qualified as "gangstah"

davenotdead 03.21.2008 12:54 PM

thats clearly an assassin movie

I feel exactly the same way. I can't for the life of me figure out why so many people are obsessed with it.

As for my own favoret ganster movies, they've all been mentioned already. But I would still like to bring up Analyze This. Good stuff.

batreleaser 03.21.2008 01:50 PM

bros. we totally forgot CITY OF GOD

boondock saints is just an entertaining movie about a couple of irish lads keeling italian lads for no fucking reason, it is no acheivement in cinema whatsoever. and it does NO justice to my home city of boston, ma. the departed however did. i love the beginning of the departed when the screen says, "boston, some time ago" and its a full oin brawl in the streets. boston was completley run by violence for a long time, south end was whitey and the irish, north was all italian. its cleaned up but it still aint great.

batreleaser 03.21.2008 01:51 PM

orson welles's "heart of darkness" was my favorite film-noir. first movie to graphically depict heroin abuse and rape and all sorts of dark shit. welles's performance as a hero cop turned sociopathic madman is amazing. such an underrated film.

davenotdead 03.21.2008 04:16 PM

oh yeah, City of God is one of my top 5 movies ever... i forgot its a 'gangstah' movie... it just transcends the genre

It's worth watching that movie just to see Cagney kill a horse. That's the one where he kills the horse, right?

(I just passed my post count for the old board. RIP old board)

This Is Not Here 03.22.2008 01:20 PM

Bit of an obscurity here, but has anyone ever seen a movie called Small Time?

Yup yup - I was just double-checking the trivia and came up with this tidbit too:
Quote:

In 1924, Sam "Nails" Morton, a member of Dion O'Banion's gang, was thrown from his horse and killed while riding in Chicago's Lincoln Park. Other members of the gang, led by Louis "Two Gun" Alteri, kidnapped the horse, took it to the spot where the accident occurred, and shot it dead. Source: Carl Sifakis, "Encyclopedia Of American Crime."
  • The machine gun attack on Cagney and his best friend Matt Doyle actually used real machine gun bullets. An expert with the gun stood 15 to 20 feet away from the target, and when Cagney's face disappeared behind the corner of the wall, he opened fire and created that tight circle of machine gun bullets.

DAMN, they used real bullets in movies back then? Those guys were hardcore!! I'm totally re-watching this tonight.
