Beautiful Pop songs with catchy hooks, with beautiful vocal harmonies.

Does anyone else on this board like them?

Not particularly, but I guess S.O.S. is my favourite song of theirs.

One of the greatest pop bands ever.

i can appreciate that their songs are cleverly written, but i am a little baffled by the appeal and mass popularity of this band, still, dancing queen is my "favourite" if such a word is appropriate for a song i find to be not quite as bland as the rest of their output.

In my opinion Dancing Queen is pretty bland. Still a great song, but they have made so much better songs like Knowing Me Knowing You and Take a Chance on Me.

I don't think that they set themselves out to write ''clever'' songs, they just wrote them like that. They are an over-played band, sure, especially with the heavy rotation they get at any christmas party all over the UK, the radio, the swanky documantaries about them on channel 4 etc. All things that might distract the pop culture junky hungry to form an opinion on just about any aspect of his/her life from what remain good, easy-going pop songs.

Dancing Queen being their biggest hit (I think?) is probably the worst one, because I've been exposed to it more often than to any other ABBA song.
To my ears S.O.S. is their least bland one... plus it also has their heaviest guitar riff, yeah!

well by clever i mean whichever one of them wrote the songs has a clear talent for contructing pop songs

Abba Gold is one of the great arguments for the idea of 'Best Of' albums (as with The Best of Blondie and The Buzzcocks' Singles Going Steady) and has become a classic album in its own right.

Any group capable of writing songs such as SOS, Dancing Queen, The Winner Takes it All and The Name of the Game shouldn't be sniffed at. Surely.

I grew up with my mom playing ABBA's greatest hits in Espanol every saturday. I know all the songs with spanish words. they sang in so many languages. their music translated to any culture it seems. a good pop hook will suck anyone in

they are not what I prefer but I give them much respect for what they did.

i see no difference betwene them and a group like the mamas and the papas who wrote catchy hook filled pop music.

the mamas and the papas get a lot of respect but the abba does not. wonder why?

i was madly in love with the blonde one. the brunnette is more "elegant" if you will but too thin and her face is even a little--how shall i say it--mannish.

Their albums are poo. Their heaviest riff was, in fact, off 'hey, hey Helen'. A lot of their album tracks sound like a late-70s heavy metal band with the girls from Abba singing on it.

Abba Gold is the only album that is definitely in my list of records that everyone should own.

I find it very difficult to trust anyone who doesn't like Abba.

I have no strong feelings regarding the attractiveness of the members, but I will say it irritates the fuck out of me that, in 2008, any band with a pretty (female) member can't be discussed without referring to the sexual attractiveness of said member(s). If Abba were ugly, they'd still be awesome.
