Are continuous displays of attempted cleverness tiring?

What do you think? Poll.

!@#$%! 05.06.2008 09:38 AM

yes. the attempts. worthy of strangulation.

sarramkrop 05.06.2008 09:41 AM

If only more people would understand that. Clever banter, especially of the forced kind, makes me weary.

MellySingsDoom 05.06.2008 09:49 AM

Oh yes. These people would be better employed clearing up pub tables or picking up dropped litter.

jon boy 05.06.2008 10:03 AM

i dont care about this place enough to care.

sarramkrop 05.06.2008 10:08 AM

Jonboy, you do care enough to reply, therefore you do care. Anyway, on a less aggro-related note and more seriously, this is about the general public, not this messageboard as such.

HECKLER SPRAY 05.06.2008 10:16 AM

You mean pretentious people ? Yeah, I can't stand them. But most of the time, I neglect them. Unexciting. Unknowing is the best way to despise this kind of people.

not really, merely adding my opinion.

Would you prefer dumb banter?

(What would count as dumb? Talking about Posh'n'Becks?)

EN got it right.

Why would anyone add an opinion to something that they don't care about is beyond me.

Derek 05.06.2008 10:34 AM

Yes.

jon boy 05.06.2008 10:37 AM

ok then maybe a little but not a huge amount. i find people who are perposefully argumentative more tiring.

sarramkrop 05.06.2008 10:44 AM

Some might interpret being argumentative as adding your own opinion and then disown the subject that you're commenting on in an act of passive-aggressive display. Or maybe that's a little too clever to understand. Who knows, eh?

jon boy 05.06.2008 10:49 AM

who indeed.

Everyneurotic 05.06.2008 10:51 AM

i feel like noah when the ark was...

...no wait...i have one...

it's better to have bird in hand...

...damn it!...

yeah, it's tiring, i rather it make it come naturally as usual.

i guess asking what you think then becoming aggressive with a person who answers could be considered so.

sarramkrop 05.06.2008 10:58 AM

Well, you make assumptions about the tone of someone's posts on the internet and interpret them as aggressive. My, you do take the internet seriously, don't you?

Glice 05.06.2008 11:40 AM

It's a context thing, surely? Smart-arse know-nothings are infuriating; the violently dim equally so. People, in general, are annoying, if you're an intolerant person (which I certainly am if I don't have enough fags/ sleep).

One frequent annoyance in my life is people who will begin and engage in an argument and then refuse to listen to any counter-arguments, or call their protagonist (in this, and most cases, myself) 'pretentious' rather than listen to what I'm saying. Ad hominem, it's known as.

The other side to that is smart-arse know-nothings who insist on repeating, verbatim, some criticism of a minutae of protocol or grammar I may have made, refusing to concede the thrust of a hurried argument as superior.

Ultimately though, it's me that's the prick for engaging in such things, so to answer the question of the thread - yes, my continuous expression of cleverness is futile.

pokkeherrie 05.06.2008 11:52 AM

Is this a rhetorical question or a poll?

not enough to start a thread about it.

sarramkrop 05.06.2008 12:01 PM

Jonboy on the one hand seems to have a problem with what he perceives as argumentative posters (which I am, by the way) and their threads, then on the other hand he occasionally fires up at people who seem to ignore him (should we name a few?) on a regular basis in a manner that I'd define as super-aggressive or starts threads asking advice on revenge. Hmmm, what a case in study.

pokkeherrie: Both.

And in answer to the topic at hand, YES. Continuous displays of attemted anything are tired.

It's ok, I'm feeling a little bitchy towards him. I'm sure he can take it.

gmku 05.06.2008 12:04 PM

I'm not sure. Why is there no "Not sure" in this poll? What the fuck is up with that?

Rob Instigator 05.06.2008 12:09 PM

I like to enjoy the wonderful parade of beautiful ladies of all shapes and sizess that walks to lunch through the lobby of the One Allen Center Building in downtown Houston Texas. It keeps me feeling alive!

I'm always about attempted cleverness. However this is usually because either my audience don't understand why what I said was clever or because it was purposefully cheesy (I really do love puns). But there is a right balance to wit that I like to maintain, too much is too much like when I'm borderline schizophrenic off of a tall coffee.

Just recently I was at a "Beer Olympics" that some old mates were holding so I decided to visit, say hello, drink shit beer, and watch people get drunk. Anyways, I was standing there with a friend's girlfriend and her friend and we took notice of the beer pong team that were all dressed in over the top retro 70's sports clothing (headbands, fake mustaches, close fitting gym clothing, etc). Olympics... get it? Anyways I mentioned how I find so much college irony annoying and the girls freak out and say "I don't see what's ironic about that" and "define 'irony'." Feeling like I've made myself look too elitist for the scene, I changed the subject. But what the fuck?

Confucious is sex 05.06.2008 12:41 PM

They certainly are, but as long as one gets 8 hours sleep a night, it's not dangerously exhausting.

Toilet & Bowels 05.06.2008 02:06 PM

who has time for 8 hours sleep though?

Glice 05.06.2008 02:42 PM

I go tits if I have less than 7 1/2 hours sleep a night. Can't deal with it. Too many drugs back in the day, one suspects.

Everyneurotic 05.06.2008 02:50 PM

i'm always moody because i never sleep enough or the odd day when i sleep too much.

Glice 05.06.2008 03:08 PM

Americans always get aggressive in the face of superior vernacular, don't they?

Go tits = go mental. Generally involves hearing church bells in dog barks and such.

I like go tits. I will have to use that occasionally. Along with 'plow' which I learned is another word for fuck. To be used in the context like- "I would totally let Thurston plow me for free".

Plow and till with rapeseed. You see where those sort of terms come from?

We spell it 'plough' - aren't we quaint?

If you yourself are so intelligent then an attempted clever comment or analysis that isnt should be easy to bat back if one feels so inclined.

I think the full spectrum of idiocy is not best represented by attempted cleverness.
