Family Guy blows

Sorry for stating the obvious but:
It's hardly funny, it just relies on you to recognise the references they make in order to laugh. How many jokes can you think of that AREN'T flashbacks and are relevant to the plot?

"Oh, there was that one joke that.....wait........ummmmm......how ab- oh no, my bad. Well surely ther- OOH!!!! Wait, that was a different show....hmmmmm"

nicfit 05.27.2008 05:26 AM

you sound exactòy like a south park episode.

Derek 05.27.2008 05:43 AM

I don't mind watching Family Guy at all though yes, it is poorly written.

jonathan 05.27.2008 05:56 AM

when that shit first came out it was fucking hilarious.

but I rarely find it funny anymore.

Cantankerous 05.27.2008 06:28 AM

it entertains me. it's not supposed to be deep or intricately planned humour or anything, get over it.
the best moment ever was when picasso was rearranging his painting and goes "and look! it's diane wiest."
south park, which is also entirely reference based humour, is boring as fuck.

batreleaser 05.27.2008 06:37 AM

it sucks, seasons one and two were ok then they lost the plot. south park is getting lame too, like that aids episode ws the first one that i felt crossed the line in offensiveness.

south park destroys family guy, it's fatuous to even compare them, there was even a south park episode that was all about how crap family guy is.

pbradley 05.27.2008 06:43 AM

When I noticed that the Peter versus giant chicken fight was a running joke, I realized that Family Guy sucks.

Totally agreed

Danny Himself 05.27.2008 07:08 AM

We're forgetting that this show is better than all of them;

Toilet & Bowels 05.27.2008 07:09 AM

the simpsons fell of pretty bad

Danny Himself 05.27.2008 07:11 AM

If you were to watch every episode.. say from seasons 3 - 8, you'd agree with me that nothing else will ever come close to it. Since then it may have fallen in decline, but I've been watching a few of the new episodes and they're getting better. I think the problem with The Simspons now is the stories are far too outlandish.

that's what I meant.

I like me some family guy from time to time, but honestly I think it's a bit of a culture thing, seeing references to stuff most italians don't even know and "getting" them is kinda rewarding to me.

Yeah they needed to have killed off the Simpsons 10 years ago at least.

Ahem... "The sun will rise tomorrow" This is stating the obvious. What you're doing my friend from up north, is stating an opinion.

I have four DVDs from that show, including the 'Blue Harvest' Star Wars special so I can watch them again and again.

And then I realised that it's less funny the second time. And even less so the third time.

So I wouldn't say that Family Guy 'blows', but like South Park - most episodes are disposable - you see 'em once, laugh (maybe) and that's it. It's not like the Simpsons (or classic Warner Bros.) where there's laughs to be had even after numerous viewings. This has to do with the writing and the characters (how many classic secondary and even tertiary characters do the Simpsons have?)

South Park has secondary characters like Timmy, Butters and Mr. Slave who I think are pretty funny - but that show does shit me sometimes because I think Matt Stone and Trey Whatizname are getting lazy.

Seth MacFarlane is just a fuckwit. This I will admit with no remorse.

I also have the complete works of Ren&Stimpy (except for the stuff from Spike TV - can't find it) and these DVDs I will cherish forever. You Eeediots!

Also got into some of the Adult Swim stuff - only seen bits of Robot Chicken but Sealab 2021 and Aqua Teen Hunger Force were cool (IMO - see?)

well except one bit in an episode recently where mr garrison runs up to the kids and goes "boys, have you seen my penis?"

the simpsons is really awful since about the 8th season though, i'm sure we can all agree on that

yeah, but that stuff is old, and i've seen the good stuff too many times now, it became predictable

This Is Not Here 05.27.2008 08:07 AM

"Remember that time I..." NOT FUNNY. When I speak to people about Family Guy, they usually say its better than the Simpsons, as the Simpsons is a 'kids show' or for family audiences. However, I think that because the Simpsons are geared towards a family audience it makes the jokes so much more subtle, veiled and clever. For example, I was watching the episode yesturday where Lisa visits the creator of Malibu Stacey, and delivers the line "Yeah, I'd hate it if my family's name was used to brand cheap merchandise". You have to think about it for a while, but that is an extremely clever and intelligent joke, that you might not get the first time. Thats why the Simpsons are timeless, and Family Guy isn't...

Cantankerous 05.27.2008 08:09 AM

the simpsons has really lost its edge.

atsonicpark 05.27.2008 08:23 AM

Yes, you are stating the obvious. Family Guy has never been good, though it was at one point tolerable. It has a few laughs, but then every show with 100+ episodes is guranteed to have a laugh or two. Though, really, South Park is way worse than Family Guy could ever dream to be -- South Park is one interesting, funny concept beat to death during the course of an episode until it's not the least bit funny. South Park is EASILY the most annoying show ever. And Trey and Matt fucking suck, anything they touch turns to shit, though Orgazmo is pretty good.

If South Park is the most annoying show ever, then American Dad is the worst show I've EVER seen in my life, EVER. I don't know a single person who likes it -- which makes me wonder who's still watching it.

"The Simpsons sucks"... Again, stating the obvious -- it hasn't been good for about 10 seasons now. King of the Hill has never been hilarious, but it's been pretty consistent for its duration, if a bit boring. Still shocking how GREAT the first season of it was.. it turned into a completely different show!

Adult Swim sucks, just bored people with computers making bullshit for stoners; and they don't even show their best shows (12 Oz Mouse, Super Milk Chan, or the GOOD anime) on there anymore.

Really, I'm not a Futurama fan boy by any stretch of the imagination, but that was the last half-way decent animated show since The Simpsons jumped the shark.

batreleaser 05.27.2008 08:27 AM

i loved team america. amd i loved the first three seasons of south park, but its just too offensive and not funny enough to get away wtith it, carlos mencia syndrome i call it.

Cantankerous 05.27.2008 08:27 AM

south park is pretty horrible i have to say, i don't find it offensive, i just don't find it funny
futurama's not that funny either though
american dad is awful too

king of the hill, however, is funny as shit. or at least it was, i don't ever watch the new ones on fox so i don't know.

atsonicpark 05.27.2008 08:32 AM

Right, I don't think Futurama was funny -- clever but not hilarious... however, it did have something missing from all these other animated shows and all the movies coming out nowadays.. actually, pretty much everything being made that breaks into the mainstream... it had HEART.

Toilet & Bowels 05.27.2008 08:52 AM

the only thing i can gather from reading this thread is that south park is too sophisticated for american audiences.

floatingslowly 05.27.2008 09:09 AM

I can't stand Family Guy. I thought I was the only one that felt this way!

south park > all

Rob Instigator 05.27.2008 09:12 AM

I fucking HATE family Guy and have ahted it since it's inception and have avidly railed against it's stupidities

I love futurama so much.
I also love King Of The Hill so much. so fucking funny

MellySingsDoom 05.27.2008 09:14 AM

Ha ha, I guess I'm the only here who loves Family Guy. I can still re-watch old episodes and find them hilarious. I haven't seen a episode of South Park in a long while, so can't really comment on what that's like now.

gualbert 05.27.2008 09:14 AM

The Critic , now that was good.

that's a remarkable one & that was a funny part for sure...notable in that Garrison becomes a mister again...but mostly funny for the Cartman story as Mr. Cartmanez though...watch online http://www.southparkstudios.com/sear...&type=episodes

“Just before the last Super Bowl, Bill Belichick gathered his football players and said, 'Let’s win this one for real… Just this one time.. Let’s not cheat.' You know what happened? They lost.
If you give up on cheating...even when the whole world is watching, you can lose the biggest game of your life." How do I reach these keeydz?

fuckin' classic (it's an outlet for my ire at pats haha, those evil geniuses)

sarramkrop 05.27.2008 09:17 AM

I love Futurama, South Park, Family Guy and The Simpsons. I guess i must be a cartoon whore.

You and me both, baby:

marleypumpkin 05.27.2008 09:47 AM

I liked Family Guy for it's first few seasons, now it's just a bunch of liberal jibberish. Like the episode where they have to leave Quahog because the town thinks Stewie is possesed by the devil, & they go to Texas to seek refuge. It's basically Brian telling them that ALL Texans are sterotypical southern rednecks, which is false.

In the episode, Brian goes to a liquor store to buy a bottle of something or other, & the clerk hands him a gun, he asks what's it for, & the clerk states that it's his free gun & that it's Texas state law. Brian says this place sucks worse than the WNBA, clearly showing he's for gun control. Well guess what "Brian", a.k.a Seth Macfarlane, the Nazi's enstated gun control for it's people, & look what happened.

But that's beside the point of this thread. So all in all, The Simpsons, Futurama, & South Park are much better than Family Guy.

I'm with you.

The Simpsons it's Ok now. However I haven't watched any of it recently.

Futurama was a good show. I still find it funny.

Now South Park and American Dad, that shit is just shite.

A ha ha ha ha ha haaa! (I think I love you).

atsonicpark 05.27.2008 10:13 AM

South Park is "sophisticated"? It takes them 5 days to do an episode, which is always just one joke being beaten to death in the most annoying way possible. I won't deny Trey and Matt are pretty clever -- they just don't know how to make a good show. No one on South Park is likeable. Just a bad show in every way.

The Critic was fucking awesome, by the way! Too bad it didn't last very long, and the webisodes were shitty.

PAULYBEE2656 05.27.2008 10:19 AM

youre all nuts

family guy kicks ass. its stupid moronic unintelligent bubblegum for the mind but its funny as fuck. i love it... sorry but there you go. south park is damn funny too but hit and miss but the tourettes episode had to be the funniest thing ive ever seen ever... but i was uite stoned at the time and i would have laughed at billy crystal that night.

simpsons, great show, important show but has failed after 6million trillion episodes!

american dad... fuck off......

the critic.. classic

family guy... top top show, love it

PAULYBEE2656 05.27.2008 10:20 AM

oh, futurama, yeahits funny but not amazing, i still watch it tho and you can watch it with kids unlike simpsons and south park and family guy.

atsonicpark 05.27.2008 10:24 AM

Family Guy is a bunch of stoned idiots going, "Man, wouldn't it be funny if Skeletor randomly popped up in this scene and went 'SHOW ME THE MONEY'? HAHAHA."

It's just too smug to be clever, too self-referential to be funny, too cliché to be interesting, too heartless to be watchable. Just a bad show from every angle. The only character I like is Brian... seriously one of the worst casts in the history of television.
