Bands you can ONLY enjoy at high volume

Okay, so any bands which you only enjoy when played really loud. Not looking for the old rock n' roll cliche of "all music", rather bands where your listening pleasure notably decreases with volume. And lets face it, most bands you can enjoy just as much at low volume. These are my exceptions:

Dinosaur Jr.

Curve

Bleach

Daisy Chainsaw

Go!

MellySingsDoom 05.27.2008 02:31 PM

One word: Swans. Check ou the "Cop" LP. Also (and I know you'll yawn at this, but...) any of the Whitehouse live concerts circa 1983 - pick up the official "Slaughterhouse" boot if you can - pretty wild. I would also add any of the stuff the No U-Turn label put out - I still regret flogging the NUT vinyl - damn.

HECKLER SPRAY 05.27.2008 02:35 PM

I don't like listening to music at low volume....
Dino Jr

Sebadoh ( Gimme indie Rock !!!)

SY

Polvo

Shellac.....

Phlegmscope 05.27.2008 02:36 PM

All music should be listened to loud enough, at least.

But to answer the question:

Earth
Monarch!
Electric Wizard
The Goslings
Loop
High Rise
Part Chimp
Rapeman

Etc...
I can enjoy this shit at lower volume too, of course, but it definitely kills the thrill a bit.

High on Fire

Toilet & Bowels 05.27.2008 02:59 PM

I second that, I would also like to add My Bloody Valentine, Sunn 0))), Aphex Twin and any harsh-noise band.

"Look at me . I'm a plaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaane!":D

Sonic Youth 37 05.27.2008 03:15 PM

My Bloody Valentine is the truth.

Loveless at low volume=asleep by To Here Knows When
Loveless at high volume=complete unrivaled bliss

also, I'd add Lightning Bolt.

That whole "loudest band in NYC" junk is garbage. That album sounded like Psychocandy-20 years later.

Toilet & Bowels 05.27.2008 03:16 PM

loveless at low volumes is a good listen at bedtime

Sonic Youth 37 05.27.2008 03:17 PM

It's always a cure for a sleepless night.

greedrex 05.27.2008 03:21 PM

Much likewise, as it happens. Except Happy Hardcore, obviously.

you suck, they're not even taking this 'loudest new york band' seriously, its just some random shit spread over the internet.

yeah it does sound close to psychocandy and who the fuck cares? its better than anything you'll ever achieve.

Sonic Youth 37 05.27.2008 03:46 PM

Their cover of DV 69 was something unexpected and not horrible, though. I didn't say they were horrible, just not worthy of the hype.

Actually DV 69 is one of the few songs that really needs to be cranked right up in order to hear it 'properly', IMO.

Bad Moon must be at 11 at all times, DV 69 needs to go 20+

they were just telling me how they're not nyc's loudest band and that thats ridiculous.

and no, there is no hype. theyre just a misunderstood band simply because they like the chain too much.

StevOK 05.27.2008 05:53 PM

Fuck yeah, JSBE.

Pretty much anything worth listening to is made better at high volume.

Pax Americana 05.27.2008 08:19 PM

Shellac. I love listening to Shellac with the stereo cranked up all the way.

Minor Threat and Fugazi too.

Oh and Mclusky.

steve newman 05.27.2008 08:45 PM

hmmm... hammerhead, shellac, bad religion, just about anything with loud guitars. but i really enjoy elliot smith really loud too.

sarramkrop 05.28.2008 03:58 AM

Since I don't have neighbours and I'm living by myself, I'm allowed to blast stuff at really high volume. Yesterday I particularly enjoyed nearly fucking up my speakers while I had ''Statues'' (what a song!) by Husker Du on really loud, as well as ''Sleeper Hold'' by No Age. Times New Viking are also great at very loud volume.

aw, i've not heard 'em but this seems to be adding up to a whole lot of black-rebel-motorcycle-club to me :)

oh yeah, loud bands

method man / redman specifically "da rockwilder" is face meltingly good loud, the epitome though has to be electric by the cult which really does ONLY make sense loud. Quiet ther's just no point but once the minimum volume threshold has been attained it's as though the universe clicks into a finer and more pleasing style of nonsense where the only fitting response to a line like "i'm a b five-two baby way up in the sky" is "yeah me too" as you duck-walk to the jelly bar and down forty five shots off the lithesome stomach of the stripper in the clown mask.

el micky 05.28.2008 06:30 AM

gustav holst. iggy and the stooges. and so forth

batreleaser 05.28.2008 07:23 AM

Lightning bolt, Discordance Axis, Merzow, Masonna, Immortal, early Obituary, Black Flag, Neurosis, Godflesh, a shit load more. i tend to always listen to music loud i think.

There isn't one, I just happen to live inbetween two houses that have been empty for a while. And even when they were inhabited nobody cared, it's not like I have time to stay indoors blasting music all the time, anyway.

Derek 05.28.2008 10:11 AM

I don't really enjoy listening to any music really loud, I tend to notice a lot more things at lower volume.
