Butthole Surfers

I've been listening to Butthole Surfers since a little while and I want to buy an album of them. As I saw on this forum, many of you like this band. I just wanna know which album is the best :)

Cantankerous 06.18.2008 07:29 PM

locust abortion technician

ni'k 06.18.2008 07:29 PM

the one with pepper on it is crap.
get locust abortion technician.

would you like me to up you a track from it?

xxlouiisxx 06.18.2008 07:31 PM

I only have Sweat Loaf and Human Canonball from this album. If you to send me the best songs of the album let's go :D

pbradley 06.18.2008 07:35 PM

Just buy the Blind Eyes Sees All movie.

golden child 06.18.2008 07:35 PM

sweet loaf is the best song off the album

the ikara cult 06.18.2008 07:39 PM

Locust Abortion Technician is the most concise one, Rembrant Pussyhorse is a close second, and Psychic Powerless is probably the one you should get after those two. Those are the only ones i have, but i would go in that order.

I went in the opposite order and preference.

Everyneurotic 06.18.2008 10:31 PM

locust abortion technician was my favorite for so long, but last time i listened to it, i thought it was a bit inconsistent.

on the other hand, i always thought hairway to steven was boring but the last time i listened to it, i thought it was brilliant and better than locust abortion.

so both, psychic powerless is also awesome...brown reason to live is also great as it is more punk rock.

dionysusundone 06.18.2008 11:37 PM

I always thought Rembrandt Pussyhorse was the most accessible.

viewtiful_alan 06.19.2008 12:02 AM

THey are one of those bands who have some great songs, and then have some fucking annoying ones that never needed to be recorded.

Rob Instigator 06.19.2008 09:07 AM

I love them all. their later records are a different kind of beast but I still love independent worm saloon which will blast you with rock and I love em all nearly

I would get

Psychic Powerless Another Man' Sac
hairway To Steven
Live PCPPEP (EP)
Brown Reason To Live (EP)
Locust Abortion technicians

and the live bootleg
The Hole Truth & Nothing Butt

and the DVD which I am so glad got released on DVD
Blind Eye Sees All

How odd. I had the exact same thoughts when listening to both of them again recently.

Rob Instigator 06.19.2008 09:21 AM

hairway tyo steven is damn near perfect in it's hallucinatory insanity

I LOVE the bowling sounds at the end of Jimi, the first song

MellySingsDoom 06.19.2008 09:23 AM

I haven't listened to "Hairway..." in years. No-one can deny the fabness of "Jimi", and I remember liking too "X-Ray Of A Girl" and "Johnny Smoke". My own fave BH Surfers thing is the "Creamed Corn From The Socket Of Davis" 12-inch - all-killer no filler with the likes of "Too Parter", "Tornadoes", "Moving To Florida", and "Comb" (better known as "Lou Reed"). Must also mention the greatness of their song "Gary Floyd" (apparently inspired by the singer of the Dicks...(

Rob Instigator 06.19.2008 09:26 AM

yep yep

I also like the widowermaker EP which has Bong Song, Helicopter, Colored FBI Guy

My body and my brain have parted
I hope I'm together when I die

demonrail666 06.19.2008 09:26 AM

That Comb track is fucking amazing. Wish I still had it.

I think that was the point when I stopped buying their stuff. Although I'm sure I've missed a lot of quality since then.

Rob Instigator 06.19.2008 09:33 AM

well, after widowermaker they learned to play their instruments!

ha ha

really though, independent worm saloon has some of the best loud driving music, thrusting RAWK to hit 90 mph to.

but this fan video of DUM DUM set to snakehandlers is amazing

I'd never seen that video before. It's fucking brilliant.

I love the version of Dum Dum on the Blind Eye DVD.

I know you've seen it, but for those unfortunates that haven't, here it is (and with a nice open access TV intro to boot): http://youtube.com/watch?v=pkdrmTY7OZw

I sometimes wonder if the Butthole's weren't, for a while, the absloute greatest band in the entire history of the world.

Rob Instigator 06.19.2008 09:46 AM

I know sonic youth certainly thought so for a while

demonrail666 06.19.2008 09:47 AM

In that case, It might've been one of the few times they've been right about something.

fugazifan 06.19.2008 10:12 AM

i like hairway the best
then locust, rembrant independant.
i also love piouhd. it has some terrible filler, like all of the country songs. but it has some amazing moments, like revolution part two and especially PSY which is their masterpeice and one of my favorite songs of all time.
its definatly worth a listen

demonrail666 06.19.2008 10:29 AM

And they're still one of the only drug associated bands that actually sound good on drugs.

batreleaser 06.19.2008 10:37 AM

locust abortion technician is their best album musically. its their most realized album, combining all the things they did best. 70s psych rock, noise, lost of rhtyhms, great guitars, and insanely fucked up. on that note, its only my third favorite by them. smy favorite is psychic powerless, second favorite is rembrandt pussyhorse. you cant go wrong with any of their 80s touch and go stuff, one of the best bands of that era no doubt.

ive never really met anyone who knows the butthole surfers and doesnt like them.

touch me i'm sick 06.19.2008 12:03 PM

i might go see em on the 26th. it's 20 bucks and at the 930 club, so i might have to rethink it.

Rob Instigator 06.19.2008 01:02 PM

Yeah, Definately stay away from Electric Larry Land. It's got like 2 good songs on it. That's it.

Whatever albums you get, make SURE you get Hairway to Steven. But yeah Locust Abortion Technician and Rembrant Pussyhorse are essential. Rembrant Pussyhorse is CRAZY, waiting for jimmy to kick, mark says alright. Such an evil sounding album

EyeballGrowth 06.19.2008 02:28 PM

Oh yeah, Pioughd and Widowermaker are both awesome too. Don't listen to people that tell you Pioughd sucks. It's pretty much the same as Hairway to Steven, except with one drummer instead of two.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=wVcaYWlXtag Here's some awesome live footage from the Pioughd Widowermaker era

PAULYBEE2656 06.19.2008 04:00 PM

butthole intrest died shortly after they released independent worm saloon..... locust and hairway are classic albums by a pretty over hyped and average band.....thats my opinion anyhoo!

piughd isnt that bad tho, its just a bit repetitive.....

floatingslowly 06.19.2008 04:03 PM

two words:

DRUG TEETH.

the buttholes live show is testament to the fact that they were NOT an average band, but an insane and amazing fucking band. their show was toally influenced by performance art, and gave an aspect of wierdness to a scene that was dominated by more straight ahead punk rock at the time. i love watching fotage of their shows inj the 80s, makes me wish i was alive back then, but then again, id be old by now, so fuck that.

Rob Instigator 06.19.2008 04:20 PM

butthole surfers are one of the top 5 greatest american bands of the last 30 years.

There will never be another quite like them.

EyeballGrowth 06.19.2008 04:45 PM

Butthole Surfers are probably the most creative american band of all time.

Even though I like independed worm saloon, I understand why lots of hardcore Surfers fan's don't. It was their first album that was a HUGE departure from their original sound. But It still rocks though, and it's so beautiful in parts. I almost treat it as a really kick ass side project of Gibby's. But yeah Larryland And Weird Revolution were both turds. ( even though there were like 2 good songs from each )

When I had the DVD, I would watch "Cherub" on repeat.

EyeballGrowth 06.19.2008 05:48 PM

I would watch dum dum on repeat. Still do ha! And Hey!

http://youtube.com/watch?v=K_PNJhmFTuo that one's got a great performance of the first song from Hairway to Steven with Gibby lighting his middle finger on fire. It's also got cool Jackofficer sounding studio footage

SuperCreep 06.19.2008 07:32 PM

Oldie but a goodie.

I love how Teresa is nodding along like she knows what the fuck Gibby is going on about.
