just listened to RR and you know what? I enjoyed it! Its actually pretty good. Lots of nice melodies and guitar tones. Pink Stream, Jams, Reena, Turquoise Boy, Rats loads of good tunes

Never understood the hate. I thought it was great on first liste. Still do. It's Sonic Pop, no doubt; but so was DIRTY and so was GOO. Why not end the DGC years in the same fashion we began it? Maybe close out the major-label-sound Trilogy? See how it would sound after all these years?

listening to Dirty on headphones I am struck at how NOISY it is compared with how I felt about it when it came out.

Youth Against Fascism, especially, the noise interplay betwene the right channel and the left channel on top of kim;s bass, is fucking awesome.

Their weakest album, in my opinion. Not completly bad or unlistenable, but... well, I was really disappointed when it came out.

The first time I finished listening to it, I was like : "that's all ? Where is the noise ? Oh, shit..."

Yeah, I don't like EJSTANS very much, but at least the guitars don't sound as bland as they do on RR...

but we can all agree that the single greatst sonic youth recording is Macbeth on the ciccone youth album right?

i dont understand why people hate rather ripped. it could of been SO MUCH worse. and all of those songs are better than any song any of us will ever write..

I enjoy the fuck out of rather ripped. I woudl rather listen to rather ripped anyday than Murray street, which I like, but which brings me down and puts me in a foul depressed mood.

I don't hate it, but compared to the rest of their discography, it sounds like it has been produced by Nigel Godrich... (I was about to say Rick Rubin, but it 's too inflated maybe.)

RR is nice.

True true. Everything sounds so heavy on that album. I listened to Dirty and then went and listened to Daydream and it sounds like they were playing on toy guitars

I think people give Rather Ripped so much shit because it's a Sonic Youth album, and once you get ear-orgasms from a band yr standards are irreversibly altered.
If Rather Ripped was the debut of some small, unheard of band, I think people would appreciate it a lot more.

I still haven't bought Rather Ripped. When I listen to it on iTunes, it doesn't sound that bad. It's not awful.

So I loved it.

I like it more than Dirty.

To me Rather Ripped is one of the best albums the band has ever made. Pink Steam is in top5 of alltime SY-songs.

i cant believe how it slipped by me before. I've never really noticed the song before but listening to it last night knocked me out. Beautiful guitar's
and The Neutral's wicked too

No it isn't, I fucking adore Rather Ripped. Yes, its poppy, but people were probably saying that negatively about Goo and Dirty when they were released, and now they're indeispensible cult albums.
There are weak tracks, and Lee's is the weakest I've ever heard from him, but mostly its just sublime, and Pink Steam, Or, and particularly Eyeliner and Helen Lundburg I rate amongst the greatest SY tracks ever. Or is up there with JC in terms of the most moving. And Pink Steam, listening to the peice build so delicately and beautifully and for Thurston's vocals to break in - its soooo good. You guys are entitled to dislike RR, but I for one don't listen to SY just for 'noise', they're incredible songwriters, and Rather Ripped is an excellent showcase of this.

The day the album came out, I bought it and pressed play. When "Reena" ended, I hit the back-button and listened to it again. I must've listened to "Reena" 10 times that day. So there, haters.

I think Rather Ripped and Sonic Nurse are almost as good as Evol, Sister and Daydream Nation.

All Sonic Youth albums are good and some of them are excellent.

rather ripped is a great album.incinerate is one of the best songs i ever heard.the whole record is one of the best records i have ever heard probably rather ripped is one of the best rock´n roll records ever.there is no noise?of course why should there be noise! should they always to the same?they go new ways from record to record and that´s great you always get something different!this is not pop! are you all completely dumm?britney spears is pop not sonic youth.that´s geat music they are extraordinary aweswome !

i also love bad moon rising or sister or evol but way should they not try different things

Sonic Youth would not be Sonic Youth if they played like any indie rock band... No dissonance, no alternative chord, no convoluted musical structure....
I don't want them to always do the same, but I like them because they don't play the same as most of the other rock bands.

Hmm I think Rather Ripped is good, not a masterpiece and not one of their best in my opinion (Sonic Nurse was a complete masterpiece in my opinion, and EJSTANS is fucking great), but still a very good album. I especially enjoy Rats and Jams Run Free; I think The Neutral is one of the weakest SY tracks though
