Black Flag "spin-offs"

In my continuing efforts to spread musical negativity throughout the interland, answer me this: who were the worst Black Flag "spin-off" bands?

For a band with so much energy and talent, a whole lot of drivel emerged from within.

Poll if I can bring myself to be reminded of the horrors.

atsonicpark 07.21.2008 07:26 PM

Probably Mojack.

Pookie 07.21.2008 07:28 PM

That reminds me. I should have included Gone.

atsonicpark 07.21.2008 07:29 PM

and confront james!

I've never heard Gone actually or Greg Ginn's solo stuff... I would assume it's terrible.

Pookie 07.21.2008 07:31 PM

I've never heard Mojack, but apparently it sounds very similar to Gone. And Ginn solo sounds like Gone, but with his TERRIBLE vocals.

atsonicpark 07.21.2008 07:32 PM

wow. I'll have to check that out.. for the comedy.

I've always wanted to like Ginn, because he seems like a reasonably cool guy but he... I dunno, I think he's smoked too much pot.

demonrail666 07.21.2008 07:39 PM

Do you know i don't think i've ever heard any of the Black Flag spin-off bands. Can you count Circle Jerks? They were great. Albeit in a crappy, not very interesting, ultimately quite shit kind of a way.

group sex is a great fucking record. after that it went downhill.

uhler 07.21.2008 07:41 PM

october faction

oh shit i didn't see T.T. DOG!

i have a bootleg of them. one of the worst bands i have heard.

you forgot nig hiest too but they were funny. minuteflag was pretty good and rollins spoken word is hit and miss but i don't really like spoken word.

SuperCreep 07.21.2008 09:19 PM

The only Black Flag spin-offs I've heard are Dos and ALL.

I'd have to go with the latter.

Pax Americana 07.21.2008 10:00 PM

What about Nig Heist? They were pretty vile.

i think the only ones there i have heard are minuteflag.

ohh well, all, but are they? it's kinda like counting circle jerks; all had a couple of ok songs.

yeah ALL are a descendents spin off. i don't count the circle jerks either.

Everyneurotic 07.22.2008 12:12 AM

they even released a double live album in the 90's, disc one was all, disc two was descendents (the only difference was smalley in one disc and milo on the other).

GOT A DATE
CAN'T BE LATE
IF SHE DON'T SHOW UP
I'LL MASTURBATE

Gone and Greg Ginn solo are great, I enjoy some Rollins Band. I'd probably go with Henry Rollins spoken word.

nicfit 07.22.2008 07:09 AM

pardon the ot, but it saddens me knowing that the new generation of kids will think about this when stumbling into the words "big black".

Toilet & Bowels 07.22.2008 07:17 AM

DC3 and SWA are both terrible.
I thought the first couple of Gone records are supposed to be good?
What I've heard from Dos is alright though.

batreleaser 07.22.2008 08:30 AM

wurm is pretty bad.

i like ginn, but he shoulda stuck with what he was good at. making awesome fast and fucked up punk rock riffs and oh yeah, leading the greatest american punk band of all time, and heading the (arguably) best underground label of the 80s. i think its cool that he was into free jazz and prog, but when he actually started embracing these influences, both his career and label went to shit. 'the process of weeding out' is still a killer fucking record though.

Pookie 07.22.2008 08:54 AM

I would count Circle jerks as a BF spin-off but they were great and so didn't qualify for the worst spin-off poll. I agree with T&B, DC3 and SWA were shit.

Gone's first album was mediocre and the only other one I heard surpassed the first in terms of mediocrity.

I never thought much of Descendents; a pretty average pop-punk band, but ALL were far worse for some reason.

Derek 07.22.2008 05:59 PM

Descendents are badass.

k-krack 07.23.2008 12:45 PM

I love Descendents... Just sayin'.

Derek 07.23.2008 05:08 PM

i don't want no hippy pad

I WANT A HOUSE JUST LIKE MOM AND DAD

uhler 07.23.2008 05:09 PM

the descendents are amazing.

Gone is the answer, they were great live. still dig the 1st DC3 album with "We Feel the Sky" a fine sentiment that should be expressed more often these days but I can never get into Dukowski's sidework. Henry's early spoken stuff shows he has come a long way with that.

How is Tom's..Dog a spin off? former member? I remember when they were a warm up for Black Flag on one tour at The Channel in Boston, can't say I really cared for them, they just presented further "evidence" to the punkers that SST had become total Cali stoners. But then Black Flag came out and just blew the place out.

Other than Der Weinerschnitzel, I've never liked the Descendents .

and pretty much opened every show the band played from 1985 to the end.

i think greg used to play with tom troccoli sometimes, and either anthony martinez or c'el was a member.

yeah i had a live show of him and his group on my old computer. it sucked so bad.

he was in october faction too.

krastian 07.24.2008 12:15 AM

I can honestly see why people think The Descendents kind of suck, but man, it just takes me back to so many awesome places in my life.

It was more awesome back in the day for sure.
