where is your favourite place on earth?

or places if you can't decide.

i've never left europe, and never been further than northern spain/ southern germany (whichever is furthest from london) in that case, so i guess i haven't got much authority to decide. i am, however, particularly fond of county kerry on the west coast of ireland.

ya, i adore the place. all my dad's side of the family come from there, and we have a farm which is bordered on one side by the sea, and on the other by mountains. amazing landscape but almost completely unknown to most people (which is great, don't get me wrong!).

what about you guys?

acousticrock87 07.22.2008 03:23 PM

I really like the North Head ruins in New Zealand. Can't find any good pictures, though. It's a kind of have-to-be-there thing. There are some very nice isolated shady spots on the ocean-side of it. I'll upload some pics I took in a sec.

Also, the Portland Shanghai Tunnels are fucking crazy.

vegans4veal 07.22.2008 03:43 PM

i know what you mean about having to be there; that way you can truely appreciate the massiveness, or starkness, or mysticism, etc.

new zealand and the american north west look amazing in general, both places i really, really need to visit.

schizophrenicroom 07.22.2008 03:44 PM

1. haight street, san francisco
2. the social, orlando
3. st. george street, st. augustine, fl.
4. cafe eleven, st. augustine

Sonic Youth 37 07.22.2008 03:46 PM

Florence, Italy.

vegans4veal 07.22.2008 03:46 PM

my uncle used to live illegally in san francisco. his landlord was married to someone related to sly stone, and every once in a while sly would blaze on my uncle's doorstep.

another place i wish i could go...

schizophrenicroom 07.22.2008 03:47 PM

that's too cool.

even the touristy areas of san francisco are so beautiful and fun. chinatown is a hell of a ride.

acousticrock87 07.22.2008 03:47 PM

I think I've been to the Haight, but I was too young to remember. When I was younger I used to drive around a video game I had (Midtown Madness 2) that took place in San Fransisco, trying to find that street with all the tie-dyed windows.

I also want to go to Ireland more than anywhere else in the world. Second would be Tokyo, but Seoul was kinda close, so I'm in no hurry.

Shanti-Stupa, Leh, Ladakh, Northern India

MellySingsDoom 07.22.2008 05:06 PM

I've posted this already on the Photography thread, but it's worth doing again - this is the best place on Earth I've been to so far in my life:

gmku 07.22.2008 05:09 PM

Iowa City, Iowa, along Linn St. near the old Pearson's Drug Store.

God, I miss the hell out of my old town.

MellySingsDoom 07.22.2008 05:12 PM

My old town is Croydon - a total shithole. I do envy people sometimes for loving their old hoods, because frankly, you couldn't pay me to go back to that arse-fest again. I went back there last year to see my mate's band, and immediately realised why I moved out in the first place *shudders*

gmku 07.22.2008 05:13 PM

I would go back to my old town in a heart beat. It's an oasis, truly, in this ugly world.

MellySingsDoom 07.22.2008 05:16 PM

That sounds cool, gmku, really. When I went to Melbourne the last time, everyone (ie the locals) there was really positive about it, and I can totally see why. I do love living in London proper, and consider it my true home now (have lived here longer than anywhere else)....if I could, I'd move to Melbourne now, it's that great.

terminal pharmacy 07.22.2008 05:29 PM

tokyo is the best place in earth

pbradley 07.22.2008 05:32 PM

I have family in Kerry, Cork, and Kilkenny.

But right now I am pretty happy in San Francisco but I'll be needing to consider elsewhere once this lease is up.

I'm cursed with nostalgia for the place. It makes me miserable sometimes, missing it.

MellySingsDoom 07.22.2008 05:41 PM

Nothing wrong with nostalgia if it's for good personal reasons. Mind you, as my mate Dave said to me a while ago, "the golden days are now", which is so true.... Places can = great memories, after all.

greedrex 07.22.2008 05:47 PM

i go to Guernsey, Channel Islands everysummer for a week to visit my best pal there, a sort a father / brother i never had kind of dude.
I've been going there each summer for twenty years, I even woorked there during three successive summers, I am 30.
There's nothing exceptional there,, i'm just really linked to it in a subtle way.

SuchFriendsAreDangerous 07.22.2008 05:50 PM

favorite place that I have been:

Bryce Canyon, Utah

MellySingsDoom 07.22.2008 05:50 PM

grredex - your kid is adorable! Ahhhhh.

greedrex 07.22.2008 05:55 PM

he he he is a cutie yes!!!!
too young for you though!

MellySingsDoom 07.22.2008 05:57 PM

Ha ha ha! :D

Oh dear...no worries, me like the older man (25+), so your son is more than safe. How old is he, out of interest?

demonrail666 07.22.2008 05:59 PM

Have lived in London all my life and I've got a love/hate relationship with it. It's a great city but can be very tiring just to stay afloat in.

Two places I've been to that I wouldn't mind living are NY and Berlin. Although I imagine that many of the same things that frustrate me about London would be just as evident there.

I absolutely love the Greek Islands and could easily see myself settling in one of those, but not for a good few years yet.

MellySingsDoom 07.22.2008 06:02 PM

So, you want to go to Mykonos, eh? ;)

greedrex 07.22.2008 06:02 PM

Melly, he's 16 months!!!!!!
he can't walk properly yet
but he has a full set of good-looking teeth!
good boy..!
i like to take pics / videoshoot my kid.
it's nice
i can't believe you're called Sacha.
I have this ultraweird story with Sacha....
i'll have to tell this one here one day
it's a long one
anyways nice pics of NZ, u must have had a blast,i would LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOve to go there one day
knowing that there tons of ultrawealthy people who would accomodate me for free in like a massive villa with 5 swimming pools. I just have to save enough money for the plane ticket, but i'm fucking skint what with the house and evrything
fuckshit

MellySingsDoom 07.22.2008 06:05 PM

NZ is amazing - the environment is so good it should be illegal - the town of Taupo is gorgeous (set on a massive lake), and the one big pub there does the best Guinness in the Southern Hemisphere - you and the greedex family must check it out.

My "real" name comes from Mum Melly, who had a thing about French culture in the very late 60's...I like it a lot now, wouldn't want to be called anything else.

demonrail666 07.22.2008 06:08 PM

NZ appeals to me too. It's weird, I have no real desire to go to Australia but have yet to meet anyone who has been there that didn't absolutely love the place. I think the English definitely have a kind of prejudice against it, that is invariably squashed the minute they set foot there.

greedrex 07.22.2008 06:10 PM

it's indeed a nice name
related to Sacha Distel i guess
in fact my story has NOTHING to do with French culture at all
happened in Seattle!!!!
will take my time to write about this
u might find it interesting

MellySingsDoom 07.22.2008 06:11 PM

demon - you'd love it, really. Ceheck out me piccys on Flickr. There's even a place named after you:

demonrail666 07.22.2008 06:12 PM

That's it, NZ can go fuck itself. And curses to my parents for naming me Liquor!

MellySingsDoom 07.22.2008 06:13 PM

Ha ha ha! Seriously, Russell was a great town - really chiiled out, lovely people, and some great food too

Danny Himself 07.22.2008 06:14 PM

Boulder, Colorado.

Montmartre, Paris, France

Crete

MellySingsDoom 07.22.2008 06:17 PM

Montmatre rocks, Danny. I loved the "artist/cafe culture" thing going on there. Wandering down to Pigalle was good fun too, in a sleazy way. I've walked down those steps in Montmatre, too.

With a name like that, how could it not be?

demonrail666 07.22.2008 06:19 PM

For some unfathomable reason, I have a great urge to go to Texas.

MellySingsDoom 07.22.2008 06:20 PM

My mate Gavin and I got absolutely blasted there on a "end of NZ tour" drink-up in Russell- met loads of great locals - which ended up with Gav "borrowing" a few shop signs, and me and him dumping them on various vans/cars/etc. Ah, the silliness of holiday fun ;)
