the quaint American sitcoms appreciation thread

I can only think of the Adventures of Pete & Pete.

And when it isn't quaint, its surreal.

Sonic Youth 37 07.23.2008 06:29 PM

Does that qualify as a sitcom?

schizophrenicroom 07.23.2008 06:31 PM

pete & pete- gold, but eh, not a sitcom.

the office, seinfeld, and arrested development- sitcoms. arrested development being the best.

Sonic Youth 37 07.23.2008 06:33 PM

I was thinking Seinfeld as a sitcom.

Pete and Pete just might be the best live-action scripted TV show ever. That's what I'm going to call it.

Yeah, because sitcoms are animated reality radio programs.

Sonic Youth 37 07.23.2008 06:41 PM

Well, I was thinking "classic" sitcom and I don't think it really fits that. Plus, I wasn't sure seeing that it was kind of pushed toward kids/tweens/teens and not the middle age demographic.

Great show, whatever you want to call it.

floatingslowly 07.23.2008 06:44 PM

big up.

MellySingsDoom 07.23.2008 06:58 PM

In the late 70's, there was a US sitcom called "Soap" that got played a lot on British TV. That were well good, for sure.

atsonicpark 07.23.2008 07:02 PM

pete and pete is most certainly a sitcom, as was welcome freshman.

hey dude and salute your shorts weren't. there's a big difference.

acousticrock87 07.23.2008 07:29 PM

Can't think of any good ones at the moment, but Seinfeld was fucking terrible.

Alex's Trip 07.23.2008 09:18 PM

...Will & Grace

I fucking love that show. I don't care what anyone says.

acousticrock87 07.24.2008 02:19 AM

Forgot about that one. Will & Grace is fucking hilarious.

schizophrenicroom 07.24.2008 02:37 AM

there was this show with molly shannon and jason schwartzman a few years back called "cracking up" that i really liked. don't remember how long it lasted, nor much of the plot, but the cast was great.

HECKLER SPRAY 07.24.2008 04:03 AM

Dawson ?

Beverly Hills

Friends ?

Dallas ?

I don't know what you call a quaint american sitcom.

sobriquet 07.24.2008 09:52 AM

Can anything American be quaint. I mean really?

Yeah, Will & Grace was okay. But, I prefer Cheers & Frasier to W&G. James Burrows, Glen & Les Charles are great at what they do, to say the least.

Sorry you feel that way, but I love Seinfeld. & Curb Your Enthusiasm. 2 of my favorites.

90210 and dallas for the win. thank god for soapnet or i'd be going silly.

atsonicpark 07.24.2008 10:04 AM

hahaha did someone really say seinfeld was fucking terrible?

easily the best show ever. And I'm not even one of those diehard fans of it.

acousticrock, correct me if I'm wrong, but are you the same person that said ocarina of time was a bad game?..... haha.

I just don't see how anyone can find seinfeld FUCKING TERRIBLE.

schizophrenicroom 07.24.2008 10:05 AM

seinfeld was kind of my childhood. while i don't remember it, i have met the soup nazi and his family.

Did he really resemble Al Pacino in, Scent Of A Woman?

schizophrenicroom 07.24.2008 10:24 AM

according to my folks, that statement is 100% true.

I guess that says something about the writing staff of the show. They were able to take a true observation, & make a classic joke w/ it.

schizophrenicroom 07.24.2008 10:59 AM

you have no idea how handy my seinfeld encyclopedia comes in with writing- if i need a clever cultural statement, i just flip through.

Sonic Youth 37 07.24.2008 11:02 AM

Seinfeld is a show that you can easily watch 4 or 5 hours of it and not even notice.

schizophrenicroom 07.24.2008 11:03 AM

it should be a bad thing but it's really not.

once upon a trillion years ago, my parents nearly bought the kramer painting for our house. i wonder if they ever regret not buying it.

Sonic Youth 37 07.24.2008 11:06 AM

No, not in the least.

schizophrenicroom 07.24.2008 11:09 AM

my mom and i debated whether to keep buying individual seasons or sell them to get the definitive $564594 dollar box set.. it's so worth the money.

atsonicpark 07.24.2008 11:12 AM

seinfeld is possibly the best sitcom ever.

Though married with children is close.. a lot of people hate it, but it's so fucking hilarious, it's like a John Waters film... pure trash with some brilliant social commentary along the way.

Sonic Youth 37 07.24.2008 11:12 AM

I got the 2 re-gifting sets and bought the individual seasons along with them. One of these days I'm going to get a group together and try to watch all seasons in a row. Same with Monty Python, the whole Flying Circus and the movies. It'd only take about 30 hours or so with that.

schizophrenicroom 07.24.2008 11:14 AM

i want to do that with six feet under and mystery science theatre 3000. the former would only be about two days but maybe i should rethink mst3k and just watch the extra-good ones.

I am one of those who can watch Married With Children. Though I'd forgot about it til you mentioned it.

Just recently bought a MP record. It was the funniest thing I'd listened to in a while. Not since hearing Cheech & Chong for the first time did I laugh so hard.

MST3000 is fucking hilarious. The movie was classic.

schizophrenicroom 07.24.2008 11:50 AM
