Repetitive music

Do you enjoy repetitive music?
What's your favorite repetitive band/record.

pbradley 07.29.2008 09:23 AM

Sonic Youth, of course.

leakyheadboy 07.29.2008 09:26 AM

le fall

fugazifan 07.29.2008 09:27 AM

yesterday at a rehearsal with one of my new bands we wrote a 15 minute song that all i do is play the e chord over and over again with a few variations.
reptitive music is awesome

SYRFox 07.29.2008 09:30 AM

Animal Collective's "Visiting Friends" is based on the same concept, one only chord played during 12 minutes, it's actually awesome

_slavo_ 07.29.2008 09:30 AM

Goem
Phillip Jeck
Steve Reich

MellySingsDoom 07.29.2008 09:51 AM

Loop
Cluster
Om

o o o 07.29.2008 10:27 AM

In general, yes.
My favourite repetitive record might be Tony Conrad & Faust "Outside the dream syndicate"... At least, it is the first to come to my mind at the moment.

leakyheadboy 07.29.2008 10:32 AM

ooioo

Rob Instigator 07.29.2008 10:38 AM

what would qualify as a repetitive music?

most music is repetetive in some way.

electronic techno msuic is repetetive is a wholly tedious, boring, redundant, easy way.

o o o 07.29.2008 10:40 AM

also, i like the repetitive aspect of many krautrock music... things like "Hallo Gallo", "Ruckzuck", the steady rythm of "It's a rainy day, sunshine girl"... it's the aspect that probably attracted me most to krautrock, all those motorik rythms...

SonicBebs 07.29.2008 10:41 AM

what?

MellySingsDoom 07.29.2008 10:41 AM

I hear that Awesome Rock Win have a "song" which is all the bassists wailing away on one bass note for 78 minutes - like Rhys Chatham's "Guitar Trio" but with added low-end kickassery.

Cool drawing.

To me , repetition=boredom.
It applies to Earth ( a lot ) , Swans , Zeni Geva .

Yet some repetitive music is cool like the Fall , Loop , Luxurious Bag .

Yep , music is repetitive ( except free-jazz maybe ).
The matter is how much repetition can you enjoy/endure ( like the intro of the last song of "Psychic Hearts" ).

o o o 07.29.2008 10:59 AM

hmmm... I also like the repetition in Fela Kuti's music...
and lately i found myself listening to stuff by Ricardo Villalobos that i really liked... like "Fizheuer Zieheuer" which is 70 minutes of repetition...
"repetitive music" is quite a large field, but i guess i'm endurant if that's what you're asking...

leakyheadboy 07.29.2008 11:00 AM

WAIT!!! how the fuck did i forget Satie's "Vexations" its this played 840 times!

o o o 07.29.2008 11:07 AM

i think "Sister Ray" was the first song that developed my interest in repetitive music, or at least in elongated tracks with a steady rythms...

demonrail666 07.29.2008 11:14 AM

Repetition is great when you get the sense that the band are doing it because they're technically challenged. When it's done as 'art' I'm less enthusiastic.

Phillip Glass bores me. Electric Wizard don't.

chairman of the bored 07.29.2008 11:19 AM

Lightning bolt's "st. jaques" is pretty lovely, but not maddeningly repetitive. Boredoms Super Roots 3 is also some kick ass repetition. i got my mind set on you. got my mind set on you. got my mind set on you. got my mind set on you. got my mind set on you.

"sister ray" is a great song, but i think the most about her is the noise section, cause in those times was a "little" weird to pop/rock culture of the 60's; and was a great "lesson" for the future "freak musicians" (sorry Mr Reed!)
...and i don't agree with the expression "repetitive music", it's better "experimental music", no?!...for me repetitive music is techno or transe (i hate those sounds)...try to hear
Steve Reich "music for 18 musicians"...it´s not repetitive!!
it's experimental...

Rob Instigator 07.29.2008 11:45 AM

I like PIL's THIS IS WHAT YOU WANT, THIS IS WHAT YOU GET

batreleaser 07.29.2008 12:15 PM

most music is based on repetition.

viewtiful_alan 07.29.2008 12:20 PM

Reptition at its finest.
Repitition can be good if coupled with brevity, a concept too many groups dont seem to understand (namely rappers)

Rob Instigator 07.29.2008 12:32 PM

every single boring ass stupid melodramatic slow jam ballad ever created has the most repetition in it, just endless repeats of high hat taps and soft bass drum kicks and stupid fucking endless long drawn out notes on a violin or a synth keyboard.

fucking hate the slow jams.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 07.29.2008 12:35 PM

Glenn Branca's Structure is my Dad's least favorite song I've played for him. Says it just sounds like an extended build up to nothing.

Decayed Rhapsody 07.29.2008 12:38 PM

William Basinski.

batreleaser 07.29.2008 12:55 PM

guitar trio is my life

gualbert 07.29.2008 01:02 PM

I've tried to listen to one of Glenn Branca's symphonies once : one chord played over and over again , I quit after 3 min.

atsonicpark 07.29.2008 03:15 PM

Yeah, of course. Shellac and the Fall and .... actually, most bands are pretty repetetive.

atsonicpark 07.29.2008 03:16 PM

Oh, I guess batreleaser already said that.

William Basinski is my god.

Sheriff Rhys Chatham 07.29.2008 07:13 PM

I listened to TNT the other week for the first time, pretty good.

HECKLER SPRAY 07.29.2008 07:18 PM

Yeah, especially the first song, swing from the gutters.

ZEROpumpkins 07.30.2008 04:22 AM

Autechre is repetition at it's most enjoyable. Just music to not focus on, but listen to in a detached way.
