The Twenty Greatest Albums Ever According To Sonic Youth Gossip
OK fellow boardies, the votes have been counted, the chads have been scrutinized and Florida has declared itself Republican two hours before the polls have closed. That's right ... the twenty greatest albums ever in the history of ever can now be revealed...
Starting from 20 to 18: At number 20: Slint's Spiderland ![]() At number 19: Tom Waits' Rain Dogs ![]() At number 18: Hawkwind's Space Ritual: ![]() |
OK, so here's number's 17 to 15 ...
At number 17 it's Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon ![]() At number 16 we have The Birthday Party's Junkyard ![]() At number 15, it's Sonic Youth's A Thousand Leaves ![]() |
Numbers 14 to 12:
At number 14 it's Radiohead's Kid A At number 13 we have The Stooges' Funhouse ![]() And at number 12 we have Television's Marquee Moon ![]() |
The suspense is killing me!
|
I know seriously. This is great.
I was impatiently trying not to post anything in the midst, but secretly I wanted someone else to so I could. |
11 to 9:
At number 11 it's Sonic Youth's Sister ![]() At number 10 we have Dinoasur Jr's You're Living All Over Me: ![]() At number 9, It's Sonic Youth's Sonic Nurse ![]() |
Now, from 8 to 6:
At number 8, it's The Beatles' The Beatles (White Album) ![]() And at number 7 it's Captain Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica ![]() While at number 6 it's The Velvet Underground's White Light/White Heat ![]() |
nice
|
Yay! Sister was my #2, and these top ones are starting to dip into my top 20.
|
DDN at number 1? Possibly.
|
The 60s have arrived in style.
|

Indeed. I'm glad there's at least one Beatles album in the top 20. |
Now, from 5 to 3:
At number 5 it's Sonic Youth's Evol ![]() While at number 4 it's Sonic Youth's Bad Moon Rising ![]() And at number 3 it's The Velvet Underground and Nico ![]() |
I called the top 3, sayin'
|
If I were to name my top 3 albums from the 60s it would actually be 8-6, in that order. Bizarre. WL/WH was my number 2.
|
The second greatest album ever in the history of the world, according to members of the Sonic Youth Gossip messageboard is ...
My Bloody Valentine's Loveless ![]() |
Oh, more appear to have arrived while I was typing. Well, assuming DDN is in the top 2, it's nice to see my top 2 Sonic Youth albums in the top 5 (DDN, Evol). Also while i do prefer WL/WH, Nico totally deserves to be there. I'm now fairly sure that 2 of my top five (Pink Moon and Kind Of Blue) won't be making an appearance though.
|
Which means that the greatest album ever ... officially ... according to the SY Gossip Site is, of course:
Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation ![]() |
I really need to stop posting mid list and ending up behind the times. Shutting up now.
|
Not bad, not bad. For me the biggest surprise has to be no Pixie's, and the lack of Dylan is also a tad odd, but that still has to count as a top 20 that's more representative of my tastes than any I've seen voted on before.
|
Haha it's okay Earl.
And yeah, the list is pretty predictable. Definitely an accurate reflection. 19 and 20 were a bit random (thought they are only 19 and 20) and I didn't actually expect a Beatles album to make it. Also, I didn't think that many SY CDs would be up there. And no Dirty was surprising. Other than that, not very surprising. |
Just to give an honourary mention to three albums that never quite made the top 20, but missed out by such a small margin that it hardly seems fair not to give them any mention at all:
John Coltrane's, A Love Supreme ![]() Neil Young's On the Beach ![]() Black Flag's Damaged ![]() |
The biggest surprise of all for me was how badly albums like Psychocandy (just a couple of votes I think) and Nirvana's Nevermind, which also only received two.
|
You should post your research notes.

I have never listened to this album. |
You er... probably should. Like now.
|
Yes. Got out tomorrow, buy it, then blast it in headphones or your stereo as loud as possible.
|
ok, I can give the final scores for the top twenty. You have no idea how long it took me to do these. It's fucking mental realising how crap at computers you are halfway through something like this:
Daydream nation - Sonic Youth (99) Almost twice as many votes as 3rd place! Loveless (72) The Velvet Underground and Nico (51) Sonic Youth - Bad Moon Rising (50) Evol (46) the velvet underground-white light white heat (44) Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica (41) The Beatles - The Beatles (39) sonic youth - sonic nurse (38) Yr Living All Over Me - Dinosaur Jr (34) Sister - Sonic Youth (33) Marquee Moon (29) Fun House- The Stooges (26) Radiohead Kid A (25) A Thousand Leaves - Sonic Youth (20) The Birthday Party - Junkyard (19) dark side of the moon - pink floyd (16) Hawkwind - Space Ritual (13) Rain Dogs, Tom Waits (11) Slint - Spiderland (10) |
Not bad, 4 of my 5 were in the top 20. the top 3 were identical.
|
George Bush.
|
haha.
|
I was of course MASSIVELY tempted to add a few votes to The Cramps' Songs The Lord Taught Us.
|
whohahahahahahaha.
|
I'm still really suprised Spiderland made it even that high. I think I've heard Slint mentioned here like twice, max.
|
hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
|
I was expecting a far better showing for Pavement. Not that I like them myself, just imagined they might.
Rob's big vote for Trout Mask Replica definitely aided the Captain's cause. That's for sure.;) |
How's that?
|
I'm surprised Boredoms' Super ae didn't get in.

I'm not surprised by the what came up at all. The vast majority of posters on here have pretty conservative taste, all considering. The irony of it is that is that some of the albums voted have an inherent quality of making you look out for other stuff, yet the overall feel is that of a crippled taste in music in who voted for them.
