squarepusher - just a souvenir

Whoo. Comes out October 27th!!

I'm sure it'll be excellent.

New song streamable over on the myspace:

http://www.myspace.com/warprecords

atsonicpark 08.27.2008 05:09 AM

That song on the myspace is the most unsquarepusher-like song ever by the way haha.

al shabbray 08.27.2008 05:20 AM

oh cool, I am checking
check check

al shabbray 08.27.2008 05:22 AM

wtf?
Ive never expected something like this.
in the first seconds I thought it was a squarepusher typical jazz-bass-piece
but no, really looking forward to listen to the whole album!!!

atsonicpark 08.27.2008 05:24 AM

Yeah, it almost sounds like.. fuck I dunno... RUINS or something maybe? Haha. No, not Ruins. I dunno. Very proggy bass and schizophrenic real drums. Crazy shit.

al shabbray 08.27.2008 05:25 AM

man, this track already made my day. love the dirstortion on the bass!!
yeah really proggy but in no academic way more in a chaotic, more loveable way!!!
repeat

atsonicpark 08.27.2008 05:33 AM

Yeah, I love it. Way different than his usual stuff. Can't wait for this album!!

ZEROpumpkins 08.27.2008 05:35 AM

Better be fuckin' better than Hello Everything. But can it top Go Plastic?

atsonicpark 08.27.2008 05:37 AM

Whaa?! Hello Everything was GREAT. I still listen to it 2 years later. "Welcome to Europe" and the title track alone were just unreal. Go Plastic is great, though it's filled with some melody-less beat exercises that bore me silly. Squarepusher has some of the best melodies I've ever heard, he should use that skill as much as possible. Hahaha.

My favorite Squarepusher is probably FEED ME WEIRD THINGS.

ZEROpumpkins 08.27.2008 05:54 AM

Yeah Feed Me Weird Things is ace. I just really don't dig Hello Everything. Ultravisitor had 3 amazing tracks but the rest was absolute garbage.

atsonicpark 08.27.2008 06:20 AM

Ultravisitor was garbage? Some of his most complex and melodic songs and probably his most consistent album from beginning to end? I'm not going to pretend that it's his most interesting album, but damn... garbage?!

ZEROpumpkins 08.27.2008 06:33 AM

Yeah. Just tracks like I Fulcrum and 50 Cycles put me to sleep. I don't like Squarepusher when he goes off on tangents such as those. That's why I like Go Plastic, it sticks to a similar sound on all the tracks without getting too tiresome.

therealglenstyler 08.27.2008 07:33 AM

hmm seems there's always some amazing stuff on all of his albums and then some absolute pony. I personally detest the slap bass wank off's he seems to be unable to leave off each one but but love virtually everything else, thought ultravisitor was uncharacteristically consistent (though blighted by the inevitable sub-level 42/primus gross outs in the middle) and love much of music is rotted one note but I think Do you know squarepusher? is the only one i make it all the way through in one go. had given up by the time hello everything came out so don't know where he's at for this new one.

ZEROpumpkins 08.27.2008 07:36 AM

Do You Know Squarepusher was also rubbish. Only the title track and the Joy Division cover was good. I'm more of a fan of his individual songs. When he's good, he's fucking brilliant.

therealglenstyler 08.27.2008 07:41 AM

agreed. shame really.

PAULYBEE2656 08.27.2008 07:56 AM

sounds like squarepusher has ditched his instruments and his vegetarian cafe like stuff for the old shit electro again.. sounds very like that album... big loada i think....

sounds pretty ok

atsonicpark 08.27.2008 07:58 AM

Do You Know Squarepusher is probably my favorite thing he's done from beginning to end, except the pointless Joy Division cover.

The third song on that.. jesus!

Not sure why the dude put it in two parts, but okay then! If you want the last song, you'll have to download part 2, put it somewhere on your computer where you can find it, and open up part 2 with part 1. It's not as confusing as it sounds but it's still retarded. And actually, I can't get it to work right so I'm just going to download the last (really short) song off of soulseek.

atsonicpark 09.16.2008 08:36 AM

Actually I don't care that much about the last song since it's a minute long. I'll hear it eventually! Why the fuck did the guy who put those on rapidshare do that? Uh.. anyway.

Half-way through my first listen. Definitely his weirdest and most inconsistent album. I think I like it! Great bass playing, robot vocals, and other stuff. It's definitely different...

PAULYBEE2656 09.16.2008 09:07 AM

HA! ADAM, YOU ARE RECEIVING A PM FROM ME ABOUT .....NOW!!!!!

its damn fucking good!!

batreleaser 09.16.2008 09:42 AM

Haha, I already replied to it before I saw this.

I got the last song off of soulseek.

Yeah, this album's not one of his best but it's still got some great shit on it.

atsonicpark 09.17.2008 02:46 AM

Wow, no one else has opinions about this?

ZEROpumpkins 09.17.2008 04:56 AM

Now that it's leaked, does it sound wanky? I don't want any more of that fucking boring shit with 2 good songs like his last two albums.

atsonicpark 09.17.2008 05:45 AM

Heh. Well, if you're not a big fan of his great bass soloing abilities, you may not want this album!

ZEROpumpkins 09.17.2008 06:22 AM

It depends: Are there fuckin' crazy drums going on in the background or something? Like Menelec, I think that was the best mix of his jazz wanking and breakcore.

atsonicpark 09.17.2008 06:37 AM

Hm. Well... Every track's completely different.

I dunno. Not trying to be a dick... but you definitely shouldn't go into Squarepusher with expectations; you won't get what you want. I can appreciate many aspects of his work, probably more than a lot of people on here. That doesn't mean I think he makes cohesive albums; because all of his albums have filler. This one's no different. But I find the whole thing interesting and most importantly very musical for the duration -- even if I wish he'd make music a certain way, he never will, though he shows flashes of it on many tracks. It's best to just take it as it is and not expect anything.

But yeah I do enjoy the album. And some of the tracks have the crazy drums. I don't really care about the drums, I'm more into his bass playing and melodies.

A pretty weird album.

jimbrim 09.17.2008 09:51 AM

I heard it yesterday and I didn't like it at all, but then again I'm not the biggest fan of his bass solos.

That said, it might grow on me after a few more listens.

atsonicpark 09.20.2008 03:20 PM

So, this album's amazing.

Track # 10 is probably the best Squarepusher track ever actually... slightly beating out venus no 17, tundra, and theme for ernest borgnine...

Only like two of his songs feature long bass solos.. most feature just awesome melodies, distorted bass, jazzy real drums, and all are experimental and catchy and awesome.

A very uneven and weird album but after a few listens I'd rank it somewhere amongst his best. Better than the fillerfest Ultravisitor and the overly-clean Hello Everything...

I like it. its pretty good, not as good or interesting I tought it would be after listening to the first track on myspace which still rocks.
but I just listened to it one time. I can tell that I will probably like better the more often i listen to it (like every squarepusher album before, too)

atsonicpark 09.20.2008 03:49 PM

Listen to track 10.

al shabbray 09.20.2008 03:52 PM

damn thats insane!!!
how he blends all the different sounds is awesome
somehow my downloaded version missed that track, wtf?

atsonicpark 09.20.2008 05:39 PM

Haha yeah.

Something I've noticed about Squarepusher is he always tends to put his best songs near the end of his albums......

al shabbray 09.20.2008 05:41 PM

thats right.
selection sixteen s last tracks are some of the best, sounding like being done in one day. in the good way

atsonicpark 09.20.2008 05:48 PM

yes.

I LOVE Selection Sixteen. As far as I can tell, it's pretty underrated compared to his other works.

Very dark album.

al shabbray 09.20.2008 05:49 PM

yes it was my first and still is the most played one. so I would say its kinda my favourite. the last tracks are just sooooo good. really dark and pushing

terriblecanyons 09.21.2008 08:00 AM

Hahaha what the fuck is going on with track 10?
It's fucking awesome.
