recommend me some gothy-shoegaze...

I know that shoegaze isn't goth, I'm just looking for something that might fall somewhere in between. With all of the musical experts here, something should come up.

And yes, that is my attempt at flattery.

SYRFox 09.02.2008 02:50 PM

Cranes fits your description pretty well

This Is Not Here 09.02.2008 02:50 PM

I'd prescribe a bit of Curve for you sir.

afterthefact 09.02.2008 03:18 PM

Good call on both of these, rep for both (well an attempted rep for SYRFox, I must have repped you for something else, but I don't remember what...)

PAULYBEE2656 09.02.2008 03:29 PM

cranes.. without a doubt...

check these...

FOREVER (1992 DEDICATED)

THE AMAZING...ESSENTIAL
WINGS OF JOY (1990 DEDICATED)

wings of joy is an amazing record. forever is good but a bit on the pop side of goth....
amazing band with beautiful vocals from a beautiful alison shaw

Everyneurotic 09.02.2008 03:31 PM

great recommendations!

I'd also like to add Skywave - Synthstatic, its got some good melodies and some pretty gothy moments. And Ceremony - Dissapear, it has a similar vibe to Skywave but its really dark and its just between goth and shoegaze.

PAULYBEE2656 09.02.2008 03:36 PM

curve is a bit too disco to be shoegazy or goth to be honest

have we all forgot the legendary cocteau twins?????

cocteau twins- treasure (1984 4ad)

or even this gem...

this mortal coil- blood (1991 4ad)

or even this beauty

this mortal coil- filigree and shadow (1986 4ad)

maybe not but still all gems of albums!

PAULYBEE2656 09.02.2008 03:40 PM

the cures pornography!

there is download link somewhere....... i havent time to fish it out!

and any excuse to post this link..

defunct irish band THE IDIOTS (1996 dirt)
fits the bill quite nicely.....

king_buzzo 09.02.2008 03:46 PM

thanks for those cocteau twins links man, big help!

i'd say Disintegration was way more shoegaze-y than anything else they've done.

SuperCreep 09.02.2008 03:57 PM

Slowdive, if you haven't heard them already. Just for a Day in particular has a lot of Cure/Cocteau-isms thrown in it.

Everyneurotic 09.02.2008 04:18 PM

paul, two posts above your ct links, you can read they weren't forgotten.

This Is Not Here 09.02.2008 04:19 PM

I'd say Garland's is C Twin's most 'gothy' record...

yeah pornography is much better.

anyways i've really started to dislike this term, shoegaze after reading this article http://blog.wired.com/music/2008/07/...snt-shoeg.html. it just made me aware of how shit that name is.

king_buzzo 09.02.2008 04:20 PM

elso try to get the early MBV ep's like This is My Bloody Valentine and Geek. Those are birthday party-esque

atsonicpark 09.02.2008 04:21 PM

I reccomended 'em recently, but RED LORRY YELLOW LORRY. They have a dark gothy sound but have layers of fuzzy shoegaze guitars.

StevOK 09.02.2008 04:33 PM

I've always felt that Psychocandy and early My Bloody Valentine were kinda goth, but I don't know much.

Yes, definitely on the darker spectrum of shoegaze (and coincedentally probably my favorite shoegaze band besides slowdive.. who don't really sound like your typical shoegaze band anyway).

Everyneurotic 09.02.2008 04:35 PM

second loveliescrushing. i just recently "got" them.

StevOK 09.02.2008 04:39 PM

Whoops, double post. My internet is fucked up.

^ i'd recommend Astrobrite just for the hell of it, but they're not really gothy.

yeah. JAMC is a great for what he wants i think,

A Place To Bury Strangers should not be left out as well. great band.

atsonicpark 09.02.2008 04:41 PM

To me, Loveliescrushing are the band as far as straight-up shoegaze goes... their albums contain the very essence of what makes shoegaze good to me. It's so pure and ... fuzzy.

Astrobrite are pretty good, they've got some really cool/weird stuff ("Whitenoisesuperstar") but some of the production on their stuff is terrible.

king_buzzo 09.02.2008 04:43 PM

^yeah, haha especially on whitenoisesuperstar; its so lo-fi but i love it and it doesnt bother me.

atsonicpark 09.02.2008 04:45 PM

Yeah, I love that album more than any of the 3 I've heard.... but the production is excruciating at times. Lo-fi is one thing but... haa.

Good shit though.

king_buzzo 09.02.2008 04:47 PM

i like the production because it shows that its not impossible to get that kind of sound.

if you get that...

atsonicpark 09.02.2008 04:49 PM

No, I don't get that.

It's very easy to get that type of sound. A few layers of trebly guitar overdubs recorded through a computer mic. That's how it sounds to me. Haha.

king_buzzo 09.02.2008 04:51 PM

i didnt think anyone would.

jimbrim 09.02.2008 05:00 PM

Check out Alcest - www.myspace.com/alcestmusic.
It's the solo project of some bloke called Neige who has been in many different black metal bands in the past, it's not strictly shoegaze, although you still might like it.

Derek 09.02.2008 05:01 PM

Alcest are good.

dionysusundone 09.02.2008 08:47 PM

Scarling. are pretty good (well, their first album not so much, but the rest)
I second Red Lorry Yellow Lorry
Astral are awesome.
The Chameleons (UK) are neither goth nor shoegaze but they're somewhere in between.
Claire Voyant are pretty neat.
FUCKING Mira!!!
Love Spirals Downward...
if you want some stuff influenced by slowcore, you can't go wrong with anything by Lycia...

Cantankerous 09.02.2008 08:52 PM

i didn't know anyone else knew about cranes.

cranes
curve
and everything else that's been said

scarling!!

Everyneurotic 09.02.2008 08:53 PM

if people are going to recommend alcest, then also jesu, nadja and the goslings.

i've seen nadja and the goslings being reviewed as pseudo-goth along with the usual shoegaze metal crap tag. and jesu, well, they have a song with jarboe.

now that i think about it, you should check out the album jarboe and justin broadrick did, released earlier this year. i liked it even if it's not mindblowing.

ohhh, the angelic process too; actually, i think they are the most goth while still being shoegazer of the ones i mentioned in this post.

dionysusundone 09.02.2008 09:42 PM

Nadja are fairly goth yeah. I don't know about the Goslings though.

Shit yeah, Cranes are the bomb.

And repped for the Scarling. I like people that like them.

EDIT: Shit nevermind, I have to spread rep before giving it to you again.

Everyneurotic 09.02.2008 10:03 PM

some of between the dead and occasion, at the very least, have some goff in some tracks (some have noise, some have metal, some have dream pop, etc.)

Death & the Maiden 09.03.2008 02:05 AM

Xasthur - usually defined as ambient black metal, but gothy shoegaze also fits.

PAULYBEE2656 09.03.2008 08:13 AM

the scream by siouxie and the banshees is a fabulous record...

carry on.......
