Rumor has it 1000+ dead in Galveston area

which would completely explain the would explain the no-fly zone over bolivar and the stiff-arming of media in the area immediately after the storm.
I hear they are putting them in 18 wheeler freezers because it's so many.
A friend talked to several people that are there working with the emergency response team, and they've all said there were tons more fatalities than what is being reported.
He was told, "We're pulling bodies out by the truckloads."
I was watching the news and it was weird to see Wayne Dolcefino so pissed about the inability to report the damage in Bolivar immediately after the storm.
He got in the governors face and wasn't about to back down.
He was with local officials, who offered to escort him around bolivar, but was stopped by national guard.
He even offered to cover the area and have the other stations use the same feed, but was denied access.
All that Governor Perry could say was that he did not control the air space and that ground control was local and not his issue.

floatingslowly 09.22.2008 03:37 PM

ok. here's where I get to sound calloused (again):

when you are told "if you don't evacuate, you ARE going to DIE" and then you die because you didn't evacuate, well...who's fault is it?

I saw too many people say they weren't leaving because "we're island people. we survive". they were estimating that there were 30,000 left in Galveston after the evac. considering the damage, it's not that surprising.

even if they ignored the evac orders, they should have listened to Tina.

"we never do anything nice and easy. we always do it nice and rough."

Cantankerous 09.22.2008 03:37 PM

stupid fucks.

cryptowonderdruginvogue 09.22.2008 03:44 PM

Well, you also have to think about this...

The storm was a Category 2 storm based on wind speed, but it was a Category 4 based on water surge.

On the news, they were saying that the storm was a Category 2
But what they failed to report, until Friday, was that it was a Category 4 in size
It was the confusing classification that lead people to believe that they were riding out a Category 2, which they were, in part...

You also have to think about the personal tie these people had with their homes
It was all they had

And what about the children who were, in a way, forced to ride the storm out because their parents did not want to evacuate?
Are the kids "stupid fucks"?

true.
better safe than sorry though.
i actually agree with Cantank's extreme point of view on this.
avoid dangerous coasts and places that are known to be risky or u're building yr life on a pile of ashes / castle of sand already:(

Cantankerous 09.22.2008 03:47 PM

i've said it before and i will say it until you people learn.

if you don't want to die, get the fuck out. if your white-vinyl-sided chunk of shit shack of a house is more important to you than your life, your priorities are fucked up. beyond. all. reason.

actually, that quote about "we're island people. we survive" was from a 5 year old!

it's not that it isn't tragic, but natural selection's like that.

and...the entire time, "they" kept saying "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die" "you will die".

Cantankerous 09.22.2008 03:50 PM

^ what's tragic is how stupid some people are.

the darwin awards should come out with a whole other volume dedicated only to stupid people who refuse to leave in the event of a hurricane or other life threatening weather.

no, but it's true it's all horrible but it's not like local people didn't know something shitty was on the verge of happening
even IF the level of risk wasn't easy to evaluate, you gotta GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.
This hurrican business also struck the Northern part of France , not too far from where i live.
Even if yr house is all you've got, yr life is more important than yr house.
That's why i say it's avoidable (as in death was avoidable ) and stubbornness kills.

floatingslowly 09.22.2008 04:03 PM

crypto, I haven't yet heard from you what "they" could have done beyond MANDATORY evac's to save these people.

vocab words for islanders to learn:

MANDATORY
EVACUATION
YOU
WILL
DIE

I recall similar grief (not from you) over the old man who refused to leave his cabin on Mt. St. Helens after being told that it would errupt soon. I think I shrugged.

you have no clue how much it COSTS to take a working class family of four out of the only home you own and keep them somewhere else for WEEKS afte a hurricane.

shut yr mouth.

Rob Instigator 09.22.2008 04:11 PM

BTW, this is all rumour.

there are no thousand bodies man. just a few hundred at most.

one 74 year old man was found dead , drowned in his truck which crashed as he was getting away on thursday night. that must have been a horrible way to die.

if there were truly thousands dead the clamor from their relatives will shake this up.

I think it is much more likely that the Bush crime family is smuggling in thousands of tons of cocaine, heroin and whatever else they like to smuggle through the devastated area with no customs officials and such. that would make more sense!

Unlike in New Orleans after Katrina, they are not spray painting a giant "X" on a building when they find bodies. Instead, they are putting discrete stickers on the buildings. On the one hand, government officials seem to be trying to keep the media from portraying the true extent of the disaster, but on the other hand officers are tipping off reporters about deaths and rescues.

Rhiannon said the amount of buildings reduced to rubble suggests that more bodies will be found and the magnitude of the disaster will become clearer in the coming days.

Any amount of money makes exponentially more sense than... being dead.
I don't have any clue about this situation, I'm not 'merican and have no real exposure to yr news outside of Obama Vs. MechaGodzilla, but what seems to have happened is that a whole barrel load of islanders are now dead because of their own stubborn attachment to home?
Now, I am okay with where I live... but let's say there was asimilar biological disaster... I'm not sure what Ontario is at risk of, but hypothetically... Terminators are on a fucking rampage. Yes. I am going to John Connor's house. I'm not staying where the possibility of my premature death is any highher than average.
When you are told 'YOU (WILL) FUCKING DIE'* you best get your islander ass out.

They have power

How do you know that venue?

I used to do book a lot of shows there

reginald 09.23.2008 09:10 AM

The coast around Houston and Galveston is some of the ugliest I've ever seen anyway. The place could use more good scrubbings.

I've always heard New Orleans referred to as the end of the sewer pipe, the butt of the Mississsippi, but Houston/Galveston would give that a run for its money.

I agree with alot of what Cantankerous says. More culling is needed.

And, even if thousands were killed, I haven't noticed any less traffic around. Didn't notice any less even after the millions were wiped out in Myanmar.

I think what set this off for me was the lone house that survived on Bolivar. two years ago, these people had their home destroyed by a hurricane, so they rebuilt. this time, they had it made so that it would withstand a Cat 5 'cane. it didn't matter. the walls stood, but the storm surge still got inside and ruined it. people shouldn't be living there.

I just think that if somebody makes the decision to live within 10 miles of the beach (or on a barrier island), they should be held culpable. of note: my very good friend and his mother (who is also dear to me) fit this category. they both live across the street from the gulf.

the cost of these storms would decrease exponentially if there was nothing to destroy on the beach. and I gotta tell ya, it's not like it's going to get better soon. as long as we continue to cause imbalance in the earth's homeostasis, these storms will only get worse and come more frequently.

it's throwing good money after bad.

now, again, if somebody really wants to live where they can see the water from their window, let them, but the bailouts will have to stop at some point. if it was all the rage to live on the side of an active volcano, I would be saying the same thing.

back to the original subject, I feel that all those that made the choice to stay on the islands (despite the MANDATORY EVACUATION - YOU WILL DIE notice), should be heavily fined. their decision of inaction places rescue worker's lives in mortal danger each time one is called out to rescue Kaptain Krazy and his Kin. I have little to no sympathy for them.

anyways, I hope that you and yrs is ok. I think that where you live got hit a lot harder than was expected but I hope that it wasn't too bad when you got home.

last year, I had to evacuate my home due to an ice storm (been through 100's, but nothing like this one). we were without power for a week and it was 20 degrees inside, so staying was not an option. I'm still traumatized by it.

ps: crypto - she has some friends playing there...soon.
