who would you most like to see curate ATP Japan (if they ever get around to it)

ATP Japan has been rumored for the last several years, and who would you love to see curate if it were to occur and can afford the trip

Hijokaidan would be real cool since Jojo runs Alchemy, and that line up would be intense

i think Haino would be the best though, through his collaborations he has shown much interest across multiple genres like jazz, rock, noise, etc

al shabbray 09.26.2008 12:31 PM

boredoms

Glice 09.26.2008 12:33 PM

Barry Hogan.

batreleaser 09.26.2008 01:19 PM

boredoms, definitley. they would be able to bring out all the best noise and avant rock bands from japan, and still would be able to bring out the best u.s. bands because theyre so well connected. not to mention, theyre shoulda been a boredoms atp years ago.

Glice 09.26.2008 01:39 PM

I'll go along with that - Friday - Haino percussion evening (4 hours); Saturday - Fushitsusha all-dayer; Sunday - collaborations day! Featuring Haino and no fucking Patton or Zorn please.

Edit: And a hurdy-gurdy solo set wedged in there somewhere please.

pokkeherrie 09.26.2008 02:29 PM

I don't care because I wouldn't be able to go anyway.

It would very likely be Boredoms though since they've played a bunch of ATPs already... I don't think Haino ever has.

jennthebenn 09.26.2008 02:46 PM

picked incapacitants, because boredoms are TOO obvious of a choice.
that and the fact that incapacitants fucking destroy.

uhler 09.26.2008 02:47 PM

i want to see gauze play it.

me. 09.26.2008 04:08 PM

Boredoms without a doubt. If not, Merzbow

Everyneurotic 09.26.2008 04:33 PM

boredoms: the possibilities of a bunch of their side projects presented live (ooioo and aeo, most likely) plus many of their collaborations and peer groups from japan and elsewhere is promising. still, if boredoms curates, that means no seichii yamamoto, no corrupted, no grind orchestra which would be heartbreaking. also, it almost guaranties that john zorn and/or mike patton get to play.

haino: definitely would bring tons of people from the avant/tzadik scene, plus top noisers from japan. still, i would be interested in what else he would try to bring, which psych bands he'd ask (i bet either amt or musica transonic would play) and also if he's bring blues players and more traditional japanese music to the fold. i bet he'd bring some theater and sound installations to atp.

merzbow: as much as i love masami, i'd think he'd have the dullest bill he could, tons of tzadik artists, tons of laptop shit and lowercase improv. i could guess he'd get russell haswell, z'ev, masonna, haino (kikuri set probably), nurse with wound on the good side.

masonna: it would be sweet if maso decides to seize the occasion and play with his various projects (acid eater, space machine, christinne 23 onna and of course masonna, ideally headlining the best day) but it's more probable that he'd just play with acid eater and get mostly garage punk bands to since he hasn't done noise or synth shit in a long time. angel'in heavy syrup, merzbow, hijokaidan and astro are granted, but i'd say he'd get munehiro narita, amt, mc5/dkt, dmbq, gauze and maybe some punk bands like gai and confuse as well. (i don't know but maybe he'd get some of siltbreeze's recent roster since it's kinda up his alley).

incapacitants: they'd do the harshest noise bill, without much variation. lasse marhaug, fe-mail, carlos giffoni, pain jerk, merzbow, hijokaidan, probably ramleh, and astro with the possibility of trying to persued a c.c.c.c. reunion.

hijokaidan: jojo would bring the cream of alchemy, for sure; but he'd also base his choices on the many fields of improvisation, from keith rowe to ikue mori with tons of media/genre/instrumentation in between. expect some japanese free jazz and many pairings of hijo-associates playing throughout.

Glice 09.26.2008 05:39 PM

I'm a little drunk now, so semi-seriously - of the interviews I've read with the choices above, Haino has talked about a much broader spectrum of music than anyone else. I'd be surprised if Haino picked anyone 'obvious', it'd probably be some soukous band and Munir Bashir [or his son as Munir may be RIP] and the master musicians of Joujouka and that sort of thing (that is to say, a completely un-sellable festival).

Dead-Air 09.26.2008 06:41 PM

I voted Boredoms, but then, immediately, I thought, "No, Acid Mother's Temple!"

Either Acid Mothers Temple or Boredoms.

MellySingsDoom 09.26.2008 07:02 PM

Incapacitanta. Purely to see T Mikawa whip out his Makawa in pubic.

jennthebenn 09.26.2008 07:04 PM

although Endo would probably pick a bunch of horrid J-Pop acts.

pantophobia 09.26.2008 07:20 PM

Hate on Endo Shozo much? :p

Hamada would headline with his stirring rendition of Wow War Tonight!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rx68TDfqcbE

and Matsumoto as his Batsu would be forced to dance ballroom style in the middle of the Incapacitants set

batreleaser 09.26.2008 09:14 PM

keiji could get sunn o))), boris, oren ambarchi southern lord crew just as easily as he could get his noise buddies to come along. imagine keiji, fushitsusha, sunn o))), boris w/ keiji (black: implification flodding is the best thing theyve ever done in my opinion), oren ambarchi, oren ambarchi and robbbie avenaim re-uniting as phlegm, grief, striborg, kk null and keiji doing "mamono", john zorn/keiji trio, damn, i could go on forever.

i still think boredoms wins though, who the fuck cares if theyre the obvious choice?

Everyneurotic 09.26.2008 09:20 PM

hmmm...it's funny how everyone assumes haino will be playing with fushitsusha.

pantophobia 09.26.2008 09:24 PM

i don't think he'll play under that name ever again since Ozawa passed away

Everyneurotic 09.26.2008 09:31 PM

exactly.

jon boy 09.26.2008 09:33 PM

to be honest just about any of the listed people would be good. maybe perhaps a collaberation of all of them?

narlus 09.26.2008 10:07 PM

what about Batoh?

its just wishful thinking my man, this whole thread is wishful thinking.

Everyneurotic 09.27.2008 01:06 PM

i think i would be more excited if batoh curated it, or more likely ghost. michio kurihara, tabata mitsuru and masaki batoh picking bands, between the three with just inviting their associate projects would be a hell of a festival.

cheers for mentioning him.

i meant have Batoh curate it...i'm well aware of what band he leads.

andrei 09.28.2008 05:52 AM

Otomo Yoshihide in various line-ups and Ghost

atsonicpark 09.28.2008 09:28 AM

Probably Mukai from Zazen Boys/Number Girl. He has a really weird taste in music and a very wide knowledge of Japan and American music. I think he'd have Boredoms play for example. Another choice would be Tatsuya Yoshida or Otomo Yoshihide, who would both be excellent.

But of the ones you listed, obviously Boredoms.... but only if that meant that Yamamoto and all of his bands could play, which as everyneurotic posted, probably wouldn't happen. Soooooooooo..

I didn't think you were unaware.... I was just saying that Ghost (which is my personal fave of his projects) was MY choice. I wasn't trying to educate you, as much as I was trying to share my opinion.
