The Thrift Shop..

is the shit. I go there way to often..

terriblecanyons 10.11.2008 04:57 PM

I got a mustard plaid jacket at a thrift store once. I wear it a lot.

Pookie 10.11.2008 05:00 PM

Is a thrift shop the same as a charity shop?

If so, then I too go way too often.

Danny Himself 10.11.2008 05:03 PM

Basically, Pookie, yes.

Speaking of which, fuck Oxfam. They charge way too much for everything.

Sonic Youth 37 10.11.2008 05:03 PM

I've never been to many thrift shops, but I love me some pawn shops and used book stores. I'm going to hit up the used bookstore in town for the complete works of Washington Irving: $8, if it's still there. I only had $4 when I was last there, so hopefully no ones bought it since last week.

Oxfam are particularly expensive, which could be the reason they closed where I live.

We still have quite a selection here still though. I buy pretty much all my books from charity shops.

Charity shops are full of naff shit though, like an entire family's library of VHS tapes and horrible 1980s blazers. The books are typical of Britain's imbecile populace, twatfest autobiographies and pictures of cars with a foreword by Jeremy Clarkson. Looking for anything worthwhile is like looking for a needle in a haystack- though sometimes they put the best of the bunch behind the counter, like a dented trumpet (£50).

This opinion is hugely biased on account of me spending most- if not all- of my childhood in a fucking charity shop.

cryptowonderdruginvogue 10.11.2008 05:27 PM

I went to one once but had to walk out cause my allergies were acting up
Too dusty in those places

the thrift shops here are by no means dusty, they are crowded with people buying shit! and I imagine there is a larger selection of shit to buy in America vs Europe because Americans are religiously excessive consumers!

today I bought a bad ass rain coat for 9 dollars. I haven't bought a jacket in ten years!

One of my friends gets like 90% of her clothes from stores like these, I don't know how she does it, but literally everything is reclaimed from the 70s. The only clothes I've ever bought second-hand were a bunch of rodeo shirts because they're obviously not really something you'd find new in these parts and I had to have them.

I'd say more like 5% of my shit comes from there, but I still go all the time cuz there is a good one less then a block from my house. I only look for particular kinds of things, like really cool or rare t-shirts, nearly new golf shirts and dress shirts. also suits, furniture, crap to hang up on the walls, you find some cosmically psychedelic shit there sometimes, and I don't mean literally like tie-dyed shit, but rather thematically, like stuff that is will just trip you out and you have to have it.

DeadDiscoDildo 10.11.2008 07:04 PM

I love thrift shops, my closet looks like it's shared by Hunter S Thompson, Syd Barrett, Kurt Cobain, The Joker, & Johnny Cash.

ploesj 10.12.2008 07:17 AM

oxfam charity expensive? hey're super cheap here. its run by sweet old ladies who even give me discounts. i bought a long black dress for 3 euros there.

might be different somewhere else...

anyway thrift shops rule. it takes some time to find something you really like and you have to go back often and be lucky, but still.

Glice 10.12.2008 12:11 PM

I get nearly all of my clothes, except pants/ crackers/ underwear and socks, from charity shops. Bad capitalist, I am.

jon boy 10.12.2008 12:17 PM

my favourite one is in berlin. you buy the clothes by weight instead of individual items. so a kilo of t shirts or a kilo of shirts and it was good stuff too.

have you noticed how they all smell the same?

i wonder how many items of clothing are from dead people, aka chairty shop clothes?

atari 2600 10.12.2008 05:19 PM

Here there are three Goodwill locations, a Salvation Army store, SPCA thrift store, and Habitat for Humanity.

Pork had some thread about bargains and I nearly posted in it recounting some of my recent incredible deals. You have to know what to look for and what to avoid, but once you have it down you can make out really well.

atsonicpark 10.12.2008 05:27 PM

95% of everything i buy is from thrift stores/pawn shops.

Derek 10.12.2008 05:42 PM

I wish we had more pawn shops around here. Paying £10 for a book is insane.

Norma J 10.13.2008 01:53 AM

pawn shops in england have books?

compared to? the usual 50c an hour they pay third world children to make clothes and little purses?

I'm fairly sure the point of Oxfam is that they pay a lot more to the people who make the items they sell, than most mass cheap import businesses. But who knows what really happens, I guess.

Maybe it is different though, because Oxfam near me sells craft and clothing and items made by people in third world countries through community projects that are supposed to benefit the people a lot more + raise money for further help.

phoenix 10.13.2008 02:50 AM

http://www.oxfam.org.au/

the front page is funny though.

"Join will.i.am, Missy Higgins and Scarlett Johansson in a global call to action against poverty, and demand leaders keep their promises on Millennium Development Goals. Add your name to the petition and download the new song from will.i.am."

Im sure Scarlett is gutted at world poverty. A few months ago I read an article talking about how much she loves her shiseido $280 a jar moisturiser and just can't live without it.!

I'm completely poor but I regularly spend a fair amount on a good book or magazine. To me it's a little more insane spending 10 pounds on a bad meal or a coffee and cake..

Oxfam seems to be different over here- here they sell used clothes, books, records, et cetera, charging considerably more than other used goods shops do.

i rlyrlyrly wanted this princess peach costume, but it was over $50 and only available online. what did i happen to find at the thrift store yesterday for $1.50?

viewtiful_alan 10.13.2008 12:46 PM

Last time I went to a pawn shop, it got robbed with me in it...
I'm wary of going to one again.
I was just about to buy standing in the spotlight by Dee Dee King to!!!

I don't know what you're saying here.

are you saying books are in pawnshops?

that sucks, our Oxfams are pretty awesome. ..and you know the neato african board game you're buying wasn't bought off some little kid for 2cents and sold to you for $20 like a lot of ethnic stores.

I really thought Oxfam was universal.. damn. Do they pay their workers? A lot of thrift stores run with volunteers so if they;re paying people to work they'd need to charge higher. Just one theory.

EMMAh 10.13.2008 05:59 PM

I buy a lot of clothes second hand, it's the way to go.

DeadDiscoDildo 10.13.2008 06:04 PM

probably third or fourth hand. who really knows?

EMMAh 10.13.2008 06:10 PM

No joke.

Alex's Trip 10.13.2008 07:22 PM

I asked my parents for $20 with which to buy warm clothes at a thrift store.

They said no.

Aw man, unlucky. That's an album absolutely everyone should hear. Though probably just once :)

I also buy almost all my books and a significant proportion of my clothes from charity shops.

I've found two vinyl copies of Goo and a Touch Me I'm Sick/Halloween 12" in the past as well, alongside one really sweet LP haul: Stereolab, PJ Harvey, Bad Brains, Soundgarden's Screaming Life 12", Dylan, Neil Young and a bunch more.
Though admittedly that's one really sweet haul in about a decade of checking 3-4 times a week...
