60s Psych & Garage Comps
Inspired by Demonrail's thread and recent listening habits...
Any good 60s psych & garage comps you all can recommend? (I've already got the first Nuggets box, and some of the Love Peace & Poetry comps) I've been jamming these two on repeat lately: ![]() The second disc is a mix of 60s psych ![]() |
Check out:
The Misunderstood - Before The Dream Faded The ''We Can Fly'' series is similar to nuggets but a tidbit more obscure, voluyme 4 is real nice. The The Garage Beat '66 comp is nice also. |
That Fort Worth Teen Scene. I saw that in Selectadisc a while back. Is it any good?
|
You're pretty set if you get the Pebbles 5xLP box.
I used to have two of those five on CD, but they're both lost now. Glad I have the vinyl! Also, Back From The Grave Vol. eight has a few absolutely crucial tracks. "Acid Dreams" is a good one as well. |
|
Awesome!
Those are the two best ones in the batch by a mile! |
Yeah, the Pebbles and Back From the Grave boxsets are really the cream of the bunch. Pretty much any of the comps put out on the Crypt label too. Although their quality is a bit more varied.

thanks |
My favorite off the beaten path one is Crypt/Strip Records Jungle Exotica comp. Garage/Exotica crossover tunes that really reflect the best of both genres!

Those albums are great. the same with the Las Vegas Grind serious. Not really Garage as you say but definitely connected in some way. |

Born Bad - All of them teenage shutdown vol 2 - you treated me bad hipsville 29 b.c vol 1 thanks for the other suggestions |
Never listened to a comp of garage/60s psych.
What do you guys think of the electric prunes? |
I'd go for Songs the Cramps Taught Us.
http://chocoreve.blogspot.com/2005/1...gs-cramps.html The Groupies - Primitive The Frantics - Werewolf Buddy Love - Heartbreak Hotel The Readymen - Shortnin' Bread (nuts) The Novas - The Crusher (nuts) The Fanatics - I Will Not Be Lonely The Instrumentals - Chop Suey Rock The Flower Children - Miniskirt Blues These are some of the very very good ones. |

I like that one single on the Nugget's album, but from what I recall, aren't they that weird band where The Electric Prunes became like a front name for different session musicians and sometimes whole other bands? I remember reading it somewhere and I'm sure it was The Electric Prunes that they mentioned. |
All great recommendations on this thread.
Back To Peru - The Most Complete Collection of Peruvian Underground 64-74 |
The Turkish Delights comp is also a fantastic one.
|
Both of them and many others you can find on this blog: http://twistedperceptions.blogspot.com/

Yep, they were the face musicians for David Axelrod's musical ideas. The first two albums are riding the pop/garage/psych train pretty well, and then after that the members left or were fired and basically Axelrod cut a couple of really slinky, mellow, jazz, rock fusion albums. |

Thanks for that. The series of 'Love, Peace and Poetry' albums on that site are amazing. Bookmarked. |

and this is not a comp but FUCKING ACE!!!!
The Fire Escape - Psychotic Reaction (1967) ![]() ![]() The Fire Escape - Psychotic Reaction (1967) Classic exploito Garage-Psych album featuring mainly great covers but also a few cool self written numbers. Reputedly something to do with Sky Saxon and Kim Fowley. This one will rock your socks as all the cover songs are pretty intense versions. |

Haha, damn I didn't know that! Yeah I just got into them recently, only heard a few songs. Someone asked me if I heard of them after they caught one of our shows. I guess the holy grail pedal I have and the way I use it reminded them of their sound. To be honest I only liked a couple of the songs I heard by them. That one single was pretty cool off of the "psychedelic sounds of the electric prunes" but I just can't remember the title. |
The Electric Prunes live Stockholm record is totally essential listening, and if you ask me it is the truly definitive Prunes document. Live set on Swedish radio from 1968, ON FIRE fuzz-psych-garage action, better than any of their studio albums! Great sound too!
Their big hit was "I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night," which is likely the one you are talking about. Another possibility would be "Get Me To The World On Time." |

It is 'I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night'. |
