Is it "Afraid Of Americans" from Bowie's birthday party? That's old school.

HECKLER SPRAY 12.27.2008 10:31 AM

Yes it is.

SYRFox 12.27.2008 10:46 AM

I remember it from tv, but it was years ago.. when I was watching it and I didn't know who sonicyouth are!

This Is Not Here 12.27.2008 12:31 PM

I'D NEVER SEEN THIS! Ahh, thats SO brilliant, thankyou for posting this even if it is old news for most of you. What year was this?

acousticrock87 12.27.2008 12:38 PM

I've never heard it before. But my guess is, Reznor was too busy so he resorted to "those Sonic guys."

SuperCreep 12.27.2008 12:51 PM

Well, I've never seen it before, so thanks! Pretty crazy to see SY and Bowie on the same stage. I never saw any connection between them.

barnaclelapse 12.27.2008 01:04 PM

It's still awesome, even if I have seen it before.

No, actually Bowie has really good musical taste and probably knows way more "underground" bands than we do.

acousticrock87 12.27.2008 04:36 PM

I know, I was joking. I love Reznor, too.

Me too. Though I haven't heard YEARZEROREMIXED, THE SLIP or GHOSTS I-IV yet. I don't know what happened there!

acousticrock87 12.27.2008 05:02 PM

They're all pretty different, and his stuff is extremely preference-based so it's hard to judge whether they'd be good for one person. But I'd recommend Ghosts. It's just a really weird fucking album, and a lot more interesting than the other two. Sometimes I hate it, and sometimes I love it. It's very random, and worth it just to have when you feel like it. The other two are more standard NIN.

And I'm sure you know, but here's the The Slip and the free 1/4 of Ghosts.

noisereductions 12.27.2008 05:08 PM

Earlier in the year, when they came out I still had dialup, so it was a real pain in the ass to download them. I figured I would buy the full GHOSTS but never did. I wasnt crazy about YEAR ZERO. I thought it was okay, but WITH TEETH was way better.

acousticrock87 12.27.2008 05:11 PM

Yeah, I think With Teeth is my favorite album by him, along with Downward. It didn't get the appreciation it deserved, I think, cause it had more pop elements. I liked Year Zero a lot when it came out, but it didn't last very long. But there are a few awesome tracks that I still love (Vessel, Zero Sum, In This Twilight).

SpectralJulianIsNotDead 12.27.2008 05:14 PM

David Bowie and Sonic Youth should do a collaboration album

his good voice with sonic guitars will be great.

viewtiful_alan 12.28.2008 12:13 AM

To NR: with teeth better than year zero..?
Come on.

Decayed Rhapsody 12.28.2008 02:38 AM

He mentioned "Tom Violence" as one of his favorite songs in some interview, and he's said he still listens to Glenn Branca's work.

*Wayyyyyy better.

Although, Vessel was the single best live song I've ever seen in my life. No exaggeration.

In my opinion, way way better. "All The Love In The World" is one of the best post-DOWNWARD SPIRAL and tgs he ever wrote, and the shit stays great throughout.

kingcoffee 01.20.2009 02:59 PM

WOW, how did I never hear of this amazing collaboration??!! I'm such a huge fuckin Bowie fan. Fuck me for not knowing of this!!

Magic Wheel Memory 01.20.2009 09:31 PM

Thanks for posting this! I was at this show and couldn't really hear SY's parts in the song. I remember wondering if someone turned them down in the mix and they were just on stage for show. But on this video I can hear them.

EVOLghost 01.26.2009 06:46 AM
