a request: five essential buys from 2008
since I haven't bought any albums in six months, literally...
any suggestions for some must haves from the past year that I can catch up with? my taste is pretty broad so its not genre specific. Only real requirement is that it not be a risky buy.. one of those love or hate albums. Can't afford to blow cash on something I might really dislike. :( |

the Women LP and the new David Grubbs.
I also loved Aucan and Foals; but you should just check out the numerous top 100 that were posted on here. |

Do you know, I've never bought a Scorces record because I can't get over how that might well be my favourite name for a band? I'd go with Kremer plays Piazolla or Tiomani Diabate's Monde Variations [spelling is all over the show in this post]. |
Flying Lotus-Los Angeles
Boris-Smile Portishead-Third, maybe, but if you're only getting five then maybe not That Sigur Ros one with the ridiculous name Teenage Panzerkorps-Games For Slaves Jenny Lewis-Acid Tongue (I would normally recommend this to anyone--my favorite of the year--except here, where tastes are very different. Only if you like vocal-central folk. I'd listen first.) |

I didn't like Microcastle. Sounds like a ballad from Twin Peaks.
Mount Eerie's Black Wooden Ceiling Opening (or whatever it is called) |
I've grown to be more tolerable of Microcastle.
|
if it sounded like twin peaks, itd prolly have a better shot of being good.

I dislike them, but I hear Portishead's latest is great. Also go for Just a Souvenir by Squarepusher, but that may be what you consider a risky buy.
Ooh, and while we're on the topic of shameless self promotion, check my sig for the link to my discography. It's all free, baby :D |
Is Squarepusher risky or just relentlessly shite?

1-5 Suishou No Fune - Prayer for Chibi.
Also, "Microcastle" isn't Twin Peaks ENOUGH. For a record that sounds exactly like music form Twin Peaks but is actually good, check out Bohren & Der Club Of Gore's "Dolores". |

Does he do that thing he does with the bass that makes me want to hurt him? |
Not as much. Only on like one track.
It's a really weird album. Sounds like a full rock band at times. Not as jazzy. Has some poppy stuff too. Has a mix of everything he's done and stuff he's never explored before. It's actually pretty brilliant. My girlfriend's 13 year old brother likes it. |
yeah cat power is terrible.
|
I'm not too convinced that Jukebox was voted worst album because the music is "bad." I think it's more a case of Chan Marshall wearing too much makeup, dancing like an idiot during shows, and doing tons of commercial work that has those voters upset.
I'm not one of those Cat Power apologists who praises everything she does because I have some unhealthy fixation on her as a person. I honestly wouldn't pay more than 25 bucks to see her live, as her stage shows are so unpredictable. I GENUINELY like 98% of the music she puts out, and I think her latest polished pop is excellent. Jukebox has some great covers and, imo, one of her best original compositions, 'Song to Bobby'. While I do find Jukebox to be one of her weaker efforts, I don't like it any less than say her You Are Free album, which is typically praised by most "fans." Jukebox is nothing earth-shattering by any means, and she can certainly do better. I just can't bring myself to believe that it's the WORST album of the year. I'm quite convinced that this is simply another case of image overriding the music. Take this comment from a Brainwashed reader for example, "How long can you release substandard, undernourished albums of cutesy postmodern cover versions, and play live shows that are famous for their awfulness, and still continue to be a critical darling and indie pinup girl? For Chan Marshall, the answer is thirteen fucking years." She's had like eight albums, two of which were covers, and those two cover albums are completely different in sound, design and execution. Just another case of someone, who doesn't even appear to have listened to the album, bitching about "popularity." |
