comics and graphic novels?
even when I am ridiculously poor, if I walk into Minotaur it is rare that I will leave the store empty handed. (generic pop culture store.. http://www.minotaur.com.au )
my reading genre is fairly narrow, goth, dry humour, erotica etc. I'd probably like to read more but at the moment I dont see the one friend I have who does read comics and graphic novels.. and there are so many other costly hobbies I have. what do you read>? |
My friends read comics. Manga mostly.
I read books and scoff at them. |
I don't like manga.
I tend to like the old EC stuff -- and I like horror stuff in general. Friday the 13th stuff, or the stuff Rob Zombie's done, etc. |
The smurfs.
Smurf King and The Smurfette are my favorites. |
I always stop and look through the graphic novels when I go to the bookstore, but nothing ever really catches my eye. But I love the idea of them, and would love to find one that I really liked. And yes, I realize that Barnes & Noble is probably not the best source of graphic novels either :)

I'm too old for comic books. I only watch cartoons.
|
I bought Watchmen two days ago and am absorbed in it, about halfway finished. It is the first cb/gn I have ever read, but I can tell it'll be far from the last.
|
I enjoy most things Marvel.
|
BLACK HOLE
|
|
I just borrowed Planet Hulk from the library for the snowy weekend...
|
I love samurai comics like Vagabond and Blade of the Immortal.
You could always read some of the stuff I put out like Akihabara@DEEP, Fujoshi Rumi, or Maka Maka. ;) ![]() ![]() ![]() I'm totally shameless. |

do you think they play "hide the toe" in the bathtub together? I do. |

cuz they definitely do known fact |
I read a lot of Marvel stuff. Some time ago I was into MAD Magazine, but they have become pretty weak. Now I mostly buy the German Gothic mag or sometimes the "Dark Spy" mag.
|

really enjoyed this, hardly any text if i remember rightly, i want to say you could re-read it many times, but due to the lack of text you kinda like just re-look at the pictures!. |
I'm bummed that I can't find any of the stuff mentioned here in the libraries.
|
Lately I've been catching up on a lot of series by reading the trade paperbacks. Let's see... Criminal, Y The Last Man, The Walking Dead, Northlanders... a few others.
|
Has anyone checked out the Berlin series at all? I have yet to get around to it.
It's been around for quite some time. Two volumes (of a planned trilogy) are on the market. |
![]() Rutu Modan - Exit Wounds and here's an online graphic blog - which i've not read yet!. http://modan.blogs.nytimes.com/ |

a lot of comics get scanned and are available to download as .pdf, .cbr or .cbz files via file sharing or torrent programs |
A lot of everything is available for download, but as for reading stuff, I sort of want to keep it separate from computer. I did have some comics on my old computer, which has been fucked long since.
This one was great, but it's not available in english: ![]() |
Last graphic novel I read was V for vendetta. I've been meaning to pick up the Superman novel where he fights doomsday.
|
I haven't read a comic for a very long time.
Used to enjoy Tim Vigil's 'Faust' |
It's weird, because I haven't really read any comics or graphic novels in years, however I'm currently being flooded with them to read or reread.
I checked out Volume 3 of the Dark Horse reprints of the early Conans from the library because the stories that Michael Moorcock plotted that have Elric in them are in that and I've never read them. Meanwhile, The Science Fiction Message Board is having a Group Book Read of Alan Moore's classic Watchmen which I've already read, but don't own. I'm still waiting for my copy to arrive at the library. Finally, out of the blue, a friend mails me a copy of Frank Miller's Ronin for some reason. Might have been a birthday or Christmas gift, but there was no note. I never did read it though, so it looks like I'll be doing three graphic novels in a row. |

how is this? i read in excert in mcsweeney's quarterly...the comic one...and it was cool, but not enough so to make me pick it up |
I finished Watchmen this morning at about 3am. Borders is having a buy 2 G/N get 1 free thing, I think. So I'll be picking up some more. I'm thinking Batman:The Killing Joke and Batman: Long Halloween.
|
What did you think of Watchmen?
|
It was beyond excellent. I had never read a comic before and I just loved every bit of it. The style, the book/story excerpts for each chapter, the framing and color are astounding, but the writing might be the best part. Totally did not see the ending coming.
|
I agree. Here's an interview you might like, where Alan Moore talks about it.

Wow, I never realized Alan Moore had written so many things. I might have to pick those up instead of the Long Halloween
|
Alan Moore's Swamp Things were among the best regular comics I ever read (though so was his successor Rick Veitch's run!)
|
Yeah, Swamp Thing is great. V For Vendetta has dated a bit now but is in lots of ways my favourite of his.

It's funny how when they reach you, they REALLY reach you. A good graphic novel can engross me the same way a really good piece of lit can. Maybe this is due to my predisposition to the visual though? hmm/ |

I dont think I could stand to read comics/GN on the computer... the fun of slouching down in a really comfy chair and walking around with the thing until you finish it.. is gone. |
