Was There Ever A Moment When You Liked The Afghan Whigs?
I'm curious. They sold a lot of records, to someone.
No. Nonononononno. No.
I'll admit... there was. What was it, eh, 1994?
http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=FyDCl3Hzdy4 They played the first festival I ever went to, as a little pokkeherrie. Much later I bought that album from the sales racks, but I don't think I ever even played it once. |

I might add, the one I got was second hand, so wouldn't even count in the sales figures. I like how you phrased that question in the thread title. |
I kinda like them. Never bought any of their records aside from one Sub Pop 7" though...
Meh, they have a couple songs I kinda dig. I wouldn't really say I was ever a 'fan' though.
I got Gentlemen but got over it fast.
Yes, I was into them when that record Black Love came out, I listenend to some of their other records and thought they were crap though, then some years later i came back to Black Love and wondered what I ever liked it for in the first place
i listened to this song so many times i can't tell what i think of it anymore http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=o8r5Xvz9CjE |

i still play the cassette sometime, got it from a friend a few months after it came out. |
No, that was the point when I began to realize that Sub Pop could do wrong.
I never got the fuss over Gentlemen.
That song Debonair was alright. But i remember being dissapointed the more i heard them
I remember a few years ago buying one of their cds for 49 cents because I had heard that they were good and I'll always take a gamble with such a small amount if I have it. I listened to it, but I thought it was quite boring. I don't think it must have been one of their better albums, but I didn't really care for investing any more money in them. The cd had a picture of an astronaut in Earth's orbit, but didn't have the band's name or the name of the album. I think it may have been called 1967, but I don't really remember.
I never stopped liking them.
He has the sexiest voice ever imo. |
I'm not sure I've ever especially liked Afghan Whigs, but I like a few of their songs. This one comes in for a particular amount of love from me:

There was a moment when I first consciously heard of the Afghan Whigs, and that was right now.
Will I regret it? Time (as well as YouTube, Wikipedia, and iTunes) will tell. |
Don't get your hopes up too much I spose.
there hasn't been a moment.......................yet.
Gentleman has some fucking amazing songs on it, especially the one with the singer from Scrawl. Also, "Be Sweet" is a masterpiece. Not really my kind of band but they're not bad.
I love them. LOVE them. Own all records, Own UP IN IT on three different vinyl versions
FUCKING AWESOME BAND, aw3esome live show great fucking tortured songs, fabulous wah wahh guitar, I mean fabulous. great fucking band. LOVE THEJM. they are at least 40 times greater than TONS of the bullshit that gets heaped nonsense praise around here (korn, sum 41, green day, etc) |
Gentlemen is a near perfect album.
for anyone who has ever suffered the fear of decidig whether a relationship is worth staying on or leaving. tortured! Great fucking band man! |
Black Love SUCKS
don;t buy it UP IN IT CONGREGATION and GENTLEMEN Fucking AWESOME |
i enjoy Congregation and Gentlemen, but it's not very often i play them, i like Duili's vocals, that staccato kind of flow is unique but may be at the same time the most alienating part about their music
i love that song "congregation".
I like Afghan Whigs.
some good songs:
'retarded' 'sister brother' 'turn on the water' 'conjure me' 'the temple' 'honky's ladder' 'what jail is like' |
turn on the water is a fucking great song.
I love when he sings about his depravities, like on Fountain & Fairfax Angel, I'm sober I got off that stuff Just like you asked me to Angel, come closer So the stink of your lies Sinks into my memory She said baby, forever, but I don't like to be alone So don't stay away too long Baby, forever, well it's Tuesday now I hear him breathing inside of her Let me drink Let me tie off I'm really slobbering now Let it stink Let it dry up It's impossible How? Angel, forever Don't you promise me what you cannot deliver Angel, together I'll be waiting for you on Fountain and Fairfax |
'my curse' is solid too...forgot about marcy mays singing that one.
that My CURSE song depresses me something aweful.
I always liked that song that had a video with guys decking each other in it. I've bought the record it came from and I don't remember any other song off it.
the singer was HOT!
Their EP "uptown avondale" has some deeply delicious motown covers on it.
when I had long hair I looked eeriely similar to Whigs bassist John Curley, but with glasses.
(on the left) ![]() I even had my beard the same way. weird. when they released gentlemen I was at University of Houston in the Student program Board and we booked the Whigs for a show (which was fucking awesome) and when I was setting up the P.A. I got to meet them and take some pictures, but when I went adn asked John Curley if hee neded help with his bass stack, he and I looked at each other and it was weird man. same height, build, hair, beard, everything. just strange. we did not talk at all and left each other alone! ha ha ha! dopplegangers are strange! |
I like Be Sweet.
debonair is a great song and i own gentlemen so there!
