SY´s Reena ---- Guns and Roses rip off????

Just compare the melody in Guns and Roses´"One in a Million" and Sonic Youth´s "Reena". Yeah, the second is much better but...

uhhh

Chaffie 06.14.2006 11:52 AM

Is it just me or does anyone else think they're going to listen to 1979 as soon as James Run Free starts?

I never thought that before but listening to it again I can see what you mean. Just the very opening chord.

Magic Wheel Memory 06.14.2006 11:54 AM

I've noticed the "One in a Million" similarity before, but I would hardly call it a ripoff.

gmku 06.14.2006 12:11 PM

The opening riff of Reena sounds like Gimme Shelter by the Stones, to my ears. Only sped up a bit.

the lead riff to 'bull in the heather' sounds alot like 'fortunite son' by c.c.r.

SY of course are well-versed in all kinds of music, including classic rock, so it doesn't surprise me that this kind of influence shows through.

So THAT'S the song it's from. I knew it sounded like a smashing pumpkins song at the start.

Thanks for reminding me of this...yes...

I don't see the One in a Million similarity though

that song has a completely different rhythm

the little flourish from the end of the riff on Reena sounds slightly similar, but that's it

if anything that bit is inspired by playing with O'Rourke and listening to Neil Young, not Guns

Totally...

...I also wonder, is it Jams or James? The title on the CD says Jams, and isn't that what Kim says in the song?

HaydenAsche 06.14.2006 04:23 PM

No. Idiot.

Listen to her vocal during the verses and compare to Axl's vocal during the verses. You'll hear it.

I'm just shocked that SY has fans that listen to (gulp!) Smashing Pumpkins(omg).

Stand behind his drunken amp
Stand behind his light of love
Hear him yowl his bloody tounge
Hear him yell 4 blood and war

Do you believe in his sweet sensation
Do you believe in second chance
Do you believe in rapture babe

A terrible hit strikes today
A terrible hit for the parade
Burnin' eyes seek jesus comin
Jesus comes to pave the way

Do you believe in his sweet sensation
Do you believe in second chance
Do you believe in rapture babe

Can you tell me what to feel
Open up yr tender soul
Can I drink yr drunken mercy
Wine burns the devils hole

Do you believe in his sweet sensation
Do you believe in second chance
Do you believe in rapture babe
