Flaming Lips "Borderline" = amazing!
http://link.brightcove.com/services/...02B0000821597N
I think there's some Lips haters on board, but they're one of my all time favorite bands. They covered Madonna's "Borderline" and it's incredible. Video above. Actually brought tears to my eyes, so if you don't like them, then just don't watch it. Thanks. |
Is that some weird video player that I don't have?
|
Holy shit that was amazing!
Do they have a new cd coming out any time soon? |
Those six minutes almost made me forget about At War With the Mystics. Good stuff.
|
ha yeah.
|
im sure im going to like the Flaming Lips one day, but like all the others, today aint it.
|
I've never listened to them. I listened to bit and pieces of this. It sounds alright. Any recomendations, best album, ep, etc?
|
I read in Rolling Stone the other day that they are releasing a new album in June.

My favorite album is The Soft Bulletin (one of my favorite albums of all time), and my favorite ep is Ego Tripping At The Gates Of Hell. |
My favorite album by them is Clouds Taste Metallic... I find a lot of their later stuff boring, but to me Clouds is a good mix of their later "mature" stuff and their earlier kinda noisey/weirder stuff.
|
Clouds is great. Soft Bulletin is my fav. Transmissions is amazing. New album June/July, but I doubt this is on it.
|
if they had released 'one billionth' as a single-sided 7", their career would have been flawless.
|
I have The Day They Shot A Hole In The Jesus Egg on CD and vinyl. Most people like Clouds Taste Metallic or The Soft Bulletin.
|
You know, I like to listen to the Flaming Lips with one hand resting in a bed of steamed soybean pods and ice, while gently masticating a live roach. I note that it's best to dial down the lights to dim, if not completely off, and to have my trusty neighbor, the Laotian nail clipper with fangs, come over in her teddy and purr like a small engine. And, though alchemical (philosopher's stone turns to gold) and not strictly metalworking, yet still forging/smithworking, remember there is always Piotrek: upon this rock will I build my church. Is there no mercy for the widow's son?

Jesus Egg = Priest Driven Ambulance, son. (plus Mushroom Tapes, yo). |
In a Priest-Driven Ambulance is my favorite. Their best album all around - the "Jesus" trilogy is fucking great and the What a Wonderful World cover is one of the best closers I've ever heard. Oh, and Five Stop Mother Superior Rain is wonderful too, of course.
I'm partial to their earlier noisier stuff. I like Soft Bulletin and Yoshimi too, but I maybe pull them out once or twice a year. I think they achieved that whole "21st century orchestral pop Pet Sounds" thingy better on Zaireeka than the SB or Yoshimi. It's a shame it's such a bitch to listen to properly (even if it is well worth it when you can), else it'd be held in much higher regard. At War With the Mystics was just crap, sans about three songs. |
I am just getting into them. Tried not to rush the experience or force it. There song titles get me so excited..
|
Most original imagination award goes to them. Which BTW is what it is all about.
|
I didn't cry. I must be a little dead inside...
|
I didn't cry either, but I might have had I been stoned and listening to it in better quality.

I didnt think YOU didn't know it. I was clarifying for the ppl who were asking about them b/c they were not familiar with them. That's all, sir. PRIEST is great, but I didnt get the reissue. How is the MUSHROOM TAPES anyway?? |
Quote:
Well, it's like this: if at any point you should ever find yourself to be under the influence of mushrooms, do not, I repeat DO NOT under any circumstances make tapes. |
hahaha

rage.

If you aren't a fan now, see them live; you will be.
I saw them with Sonic Youth about 3 years ago with some friends from Lexington. Two of the guys were only there for SY, and they couldn't have cared less for Flaming Lips. 5 minutes into the FL set and they were jumping around with their arms in the air like excited little school girls at a Jonas Brothers concert. |
yeh, their live show is one of the best I've ever witnessed.
|
It seems the spontaneity is what gets fans. Or maybe they really like their audience.
Where should I continue in their work? |
loud noises.
|
I did notice that when I saw the Cochella (sp?) DVD that their set was exactly like the one I saw.
But I am curious of what you say about seeing things that "ain't pretty" behind "the wizard's curtain." What exactly went on back there? |
Wow, that is intimate being a Santa and all.
When anyone reaches that high they are bound to fall. At least they are not safe.. |

Yeah, I kinda got that part.
I just didn't know like if they were jerks backstage and yelled at you for not keeping your beard straight or something like that. Also, I just watched the video. AMAZING. God, I can't stop listening to it. It's a combination of one of my favorite bands now and a song that would probably be on the soundtrack of my childhood. |
floatingslowly,
smoke and mirrors do not confer greatness. There is an art in appearance. Appearances are necessary for many reasons as well. Are they eating animals back there? Its all good. I won't call Wayne Coyne to fix my car... |

don't worry, the robots will remember you (remember, and grind their shiney grabber-claws in hateful anger).
Ronald Jones is gawd. |
Drozd is a musical genius. He's incredible.
