I fancy buying a Jesus and Mary Chain CD, but can't decide which.

Psychocandy's considered their essential album. Definitely the one you should start with to understand what JAMC are all about. I have Psychocandy and Automatic, which I also think is very good, and I want Darklands and Honey's Dead.

It's not worth going against the grain in this instance. Psychocandy, then Barbed Wire Kisses.

It's almost... shudder... a concensus ladies and gentlemen.

i'd say "barbed wire kisses" as that was the first JAMC album i got..
it gives you a refined idea of what they're all about, plus you get the covers and rare songs that made the b-sides, so the album provides you with additional insight..
next stop will be "psychocandy", "automatic" and "darklands"...
preferably in that order..

I would always maintain that Psychocandy fully justifies the huge near-legendary reputation that has developed around it; there isn't a single wasted second on the entire LP. Wonderful noise, with beautifully simple pop songs underneath.

21 Singles is very nice to have: JAMC were a great singles band right up 'till the end (check out single no. 20, 'Cracking Up', if you don't believe me!).

But I have to say that if you're looking for something that represents the band best, I do think that Automatic perfectly bridges the gap between what they were and what they were to become, aswell as being a tip-top-cool LP in it's own right.

I love Psychocandy. Revolutionary album. I personally started out with the videos 85-89, and the first time I saw the video for Never Understand (from Psychocandy) I was blown away.

I only have Psychocandy and it's GREAT. Buy it!

I guess this is as good a time as any to confess that I'm not really a Mary Chain virgin. I used to own Psychocandy, Darklands, Honey's Dead, Barbed Wire Kisses and Sound of Speed, but I had to sell them when I was very very skint. The purpose of this poll was really to encourage me to get up off my arse and replace at least some of them.

I've just noticed on Amazon that Psychocandy, Darklands, Automatic, Honey's Dead and Stoned and Dethroned are all being rereleased in remastered versions next month. I'll probably start re-buying with the remastered Psychocandy.

Okay, in the interest of science I will buy a cheap secondhand copy of the original Psychocandy, AND I'll buy the remaster when it comes out, and I'll report back on the difference.

Fukkin psychocandy cos it's fukkin bein noisy, a bit like me and me mates Fakko and Baggler were last night, we stood outside the gnome police station makin a right racket a bit like the feedback noises y'know an we did that until the gnomes couldn't be takin it anymores, they come rushing out with their truncheons and their stupid little fukkin bows 'n' arrows y'know they just look like toys what with gnomes bein like three foot tall n'all so anyway we FUKKIN LEG IT right an lead the gnome police to a trap we made so a couple of the gnomes the ones at the front just fall into a pit full of me mate Bagga's rotten fruit fukkin funny we had some beers after like Mrs Goblin was well proud whenI told her she tried to hide it y'kno she said I should grow up but I knoe she didn't mean it though we cool get psychocandy man it's good.
