This is, like, so true!

umjammer atomsk 06.19.2006 09:06 PM

Awesome.

val-holla-ing 06.19.2006 09:09 PM

hahahaha! i remember i was having a conversation with some canadians back in 2002 about that. i half jokingly asked them whether or not they really said "eh" or not, and they replied "not as much as you guys say 'like'". i tried to defend myself, but the first thing i said was "well....it's, like,..." ever since then, i've been weening myself from using the word in that manner.

acousticrock87 06.19.2006 09:12 PM

I try really hard to be linguistically aware, but sometimes there's just no other word. Also, trying not to say it can prevent you from using it correctly. I know a couple people here, recently from other countries, who've already picked that habit up, though...It's gotten bad.

CHOUT 06.19.2006 10:59 PM

The hip hop 'like' is 'know what i'm sayin'?'

schizophrenicroom 06.19.2006 11:10 PM

they should get rid of the comma.

what bugs me is when people use an adjective where an adverb should be used. specifically, when people use "good" instead of "well". i occasionally run the rock wall at the theme park in which i work and parents are always telling their children climbing the wall that they're "doing good". i'm not supposed to say anything but i always want to stab them in the face. i've been trying to make myself use "pretty well" whenever someone asks me "how's it going?" but it seems pretty awkward and has actually caused some people to give me odd looks.

You expressed your thoughts on the subject very well, and I agree completely. Especially when it came to the stabbing part.

Haha. I've been trying to stop saying "good" instead of "well".

ESPECIALLY bunnies and sunshine. You know rabbits eat their own shit? And that's meant to be cute? And I really haven't got the requisite melatonin to enjoy sunshine.

val-holla-ing 06.20.2006 07:18 AM

so what you're saying is that the only reason i enjoy what i do is because i'm black and have a slight attraction to beings that munch on their own fecal matter? that's bullhuckey! pish posh, i say!

what about 4-leaf clovers and the smell of new shoes? no one can hate that!

Aah, yes. New shoes. The satisfying smell of a 10 year old somewhere in Southeast Asia being denied a nice playful childhood. Nothing quite like it!

Now that's the kind of talking that can lift a guys spirits.

RdTv 06.20.2006 08:13 AM

There is no need to bring the downtrodden and impovershed of alyasa's homeland to the center of attention in this thread. Maybe she has a cousin or a nephew who works all day sewing nike logogs onto cheap shoes.

This post reminds me of the time in my English class, in which we were giving presentations of poetry. Many of the speakers committed the crime of overusing "like", thus the teacher forebade the word. The speaker who came on after he said this had a VERY difficult time controlling herself, thus whenever she said "like", it became "lik.....SHIT!!!!"

Anyway, the overuse of like really annoys me

qprogeny79 06.20.2006 12:36 PM

"i'm like yes, and you go no, i'm like stop, and you go go, go, go!" -- from a satirical column in my local paper several years ago

What about a nice back rub though?

kingcoffee 06.21.2006 01:46 AM

I think I say the word "like" abit too much also. I don't do it as much as a lot of the California girls do, but it's bad enough to make me sound less intelligent than I really am. It's really embarrassing sometimes.
