Murray Street is amazing!

After playing this a lot I'm starting to think it could actually be the best Sonic album. Anyone else agree?:)

m^a(t)h 06.22.2006 04:05 PM

no.

Rob Instigator 06.22.2006 04:07 PM

it is wonderful.
there is no BEST sonic album except for DAYDREAM NATION.

did you not read the F.A.Q.?

(kidding!)

gmku 06.22.2006 04:08 PM

I remember thinking that when I first picked it up, too, but the feeling faded. I still like it a lot. It has strong material, and I love that cover photo! But I don't think it's as enduring, for me at least, as DN, EVOL, Sister, Goo, and Rather Ripped. Still very good, though.

Not the best album in my opinion, but the songs sound freaking amazing live. This was the first Sonic Youth album wherein I heard the songs live first, in their earliest state before hearing the record. It was crazy hearing them live at first, cause I really had no idea that Sonic Youth could go in that direction... kind of like a thousand leaves only in a more upbeat, happier, more major chord kinda way. Oh, and when I first heard them instantly turn on the feedback on Karenology it was like getting hit by a brick in the chest, it was really unexpected and fucking loud. I had no idea it was coming.

Then the album came out and I still think its great, but there just aren't enough songs on it. It needs at least one more to make it really seem complete to me, preferably two, but one more would do.

Rob Instigator 06.22.2006 04:15 PM

KARENOLOGY is my favorite on that album. LEE songs make me feel great

Dan 06.22.2006 04:18 PM

yeah, i hope some of these songs eventually come back into live sets. especially rain on tin.

Neongod 06.22.2006 04:40 PM

What Dan said...not my favorite but top 3 for sure.

Pax Americana 06.22.2006 04:45 PM

I like Murray St a lot, but it's certainly not my favorite.

China~Nurse 06.22.2006 05:12 PM

I love Murray Street. It's a nice mix of noise and melody...

nomadicfollower 06.22.2006 05:15 PM

It only takes one listen to tell Murray Street is surperb.

fluxequalsrad 06.22.2006 05:27 PM

Murray Street is the best Sonic Youth record.

But understandably not many agree due to the wide range of material Sonic Youth has.

But come on, Karenology does everything EVOL does plus more.

lo-fi suicide 06.22.2006 05:36 PM

i adore to play guitar along with this record

Hip Priest 06.22.2006 05:38 PM

Sympathy For the Strawberry is sick too. A really good closer.

screamingskull 06.23.2006 07:02 AM

Murray street is in my top five favourite SY albums definately.

luxinterior 06.23.2006 09:33 AM

My favorite post-DDN album of theirs, easily.

DemonBox 06.23.2006 09:38 AM

Yeah, Murray Street is in my top 3 of SY albums. Rain On Tin is fantastic.

satirejohn 06.23.2006 10:16 AM

my favourite post-Daydream too! EVOL is still the best though...

selkcip 06.23.2006 10:32 AM

i dunno, it's not as good as dirty, exp jet set, washing machine, a thousand leaves, and rather ripped.

toxic johnny 06.23.2006 10:32 AM

Yeah it's great... especially the Karenology - Radical Adults - Plastic Sun - Sympathy axis.

Idontcareican 07.03.2006 08:26 PM

Does anyone else love Rain On Tin as much as I do?
"we all hope
to signal kin
days of gold
now rain on tin
gather round
gather friends
never fear
never again"

I do.

alyasa 07.03.2006 09:19 PM

It's absolutely stunning, isn't it? From the opening crash of the cymbals to the melodic interlude and the final epic sound scape.... As if Sonic Youth captured divinity and encapsulated it in a rock song... So much melody... :)

Definitely.

The best straight-up guitar album they've released. Rain On Tin, Strawberry, Radical Adults...hell, the whole thing except the way-too-long Karenology. If it were cut 5 minutes shorter this would be my favorite album. Just my opinion...

vasanum 07.03.2006 11:13 PM

this is being the hardest of their records for me to get into, and with the way people talk, i feel like i'm missing out on something.

someone help.

Karenology is perfuckt. I wish rather ripped had just one moment of sheer abstractness like this on it... "Or" should just linger for 20 minutes of ambience like Karenology or the Diamond Sea.

Can you help me with Sonic Nurse? ;)

well i'm not the biggest fan of that one either, but "pattern recognition", "mariah carey", and "peace attack" were enough to make it not bad for me. nurse is better all at one time, rather than listening to individual songs.

alyasa 07.03.2006 11:44 PM

I rather think it's a bit too lengthy to take in one sitting... :) As for Murray Street, I think there is a bit of a running theme there you have to understand. A sort of proper mindset; which is the beauty of New York art and culture... And the abstraction of noise and how they fit it into rock. The cover of Murray Street is a good approximation of the abstract, sublime beauty that lives in the sounds of the album. A bit too wordy, I think... Hope it helps... :o
