Art thread

Satan suggested me to do this thread. Post art by famous (or not) artists.

This is Pablo Fucking Picasso.

Discuss.

atsonicpark 08.05.2009 07:09 AM

De Chirico is my favorite artist:

I can't figure out why I like his art so much but I do.

atsonicpark 08.05.2009 07:11 AM

Also a big fan of Serrano Andres, who is'nt a painter but is definitely an artist.

Really love James Fatatopolous, who makes awesome art films and really weird paintings and art:

TheFoxBen 08.05.2009 07:14 AM

Atsonicpark, I think the art from De Chirico inspired the cover for the game "Ico" on PS2 :

What do you think ?

Definitely. I think that's part of the reason why the game is called ICO as well (chirICO).

Sadly, I have U.S. edition which has the ugliest cover ever.

Satan 08.05.2009 07:16 AM

ai kijima (she makes everything out of old bedsheets, this one is my favorite):

i forgot who did this:

sigmar polke (this one is completely different from all his other work)

TheFoxBen 08.05.2009 07:18 AM

Oh yes the US edition is horrible. My brother has the good cover, great packaging too. As is "Shadow of the Colossus" (from the same creator)

VIDEO GAME AS AN ART !

atsonicpark 08.05.2009 07:18 AM

My second favorite artist ever (and the one that most influences my art, personally) is probably Ad Reinhardt:

atsonicpark 08.05.2009 07:20 AM

My favorite artists are the ones who are bold, abstract, but still only focus on a few elements ("minimalism" I guess) and have a touch of the surreal.

I really don't like stuff like Anne Truitt, which has the elements I listed above but doesn't do anything for me. Oh man, a BOX! Fuck that.

Dali is the man.

Satan 08.05.2009 07:22 AM

i like installation pieces

atsonicpark 08.05.2009 07:25 AM

I really like "video art" (and installations as well):

Satan 08.05.2009 07:26 AM

i also like lowbrow art

Satan 08.05.2009 07:29 AM

fashion as art (the best example of this right now is probably gareth pugh)

TheFoxBen 08.05.2009 07:44 AM

I've got this one on my computer but don't know who made it. Anyone knows ?

Alex Colville. I don't like all his stuff, but some pieces, like this, I find very powerful.

demonrail666 08.06.2009 07:28 AM

Yeah, you're right, I think this picture kinda represents the technology being created over nature and the locomotive kinda killed the horse at the time as a way to travel...

i don't consider it lowbrow but categorically that's what it is

demonrail666 08.06.2009 09:20 AM

I'm really interested in the way artists like Mark Ryden exist within the art world. The whole Pop Surrealism thing is really fascinating I think. Juxtapoz is a great magazine for that kind of stuff.

phoenix 08.06.2009 09:25 AM

The way I see it there are almost levels of class. There are a LOT of artists that to me fall within the category(which is not in any way a 'real' one, this is in my head), most of them are street based or self funded in some way. To me it's the difference between the content and focus in Juxtapoze to that in Artforum. It's more accessable art, I guess.

Looks a bit like Yves Tanguy, but don't quote me on that.

why is it that when fashion people get all serious they always end up making clothes that look like they were designed in the 80s.

I always thought his art was sort of disturbing and creepy. And I'm mainly talking about the first two. Something about the colors and shadows is weird. I like it though because I like art like that.

infinitemusic 08.06.2009 03:31 PM

Wow, that looks cool.

Aye, I always thought of the horse as a nightmare, or something. Something not real. I love surrealism and I think what they call "hyper-realism".

Yeah that's what I thought. Interesting idea and good art too.
