Favorite SY vocalist
I like them all equally, but if I HAD to choose one, I would go with Kim.
i'm surprised.
how did you come up with that? |

Recently, I've been listening to tonnes of Kim's stuff now that I have Washing Machine and Jet Set, and they contain (in my opinion) some of her best stuff. Songs like Sweet Shine simply amaze me. When I first got into Sonic Youth, I really didn't like her voice at all, and now I think she's one of my favorite vocalists. She has a very unique singing style. |
kim=hotness

The question asks for favourite, so it's Kim. If it was for best in an objective sense it would have been Lee.
I like them all equally. They all bring something different to the table as vocalists, and I can't imagine any of their songs being sung by another member.
But you know when I really enjoy Kim's vocals? When she's not so much screaming or shouting, but when she's almost whispering. Like on "Love You Golden Blue", "Shadow of a Doubt", "Sympathy for the Strawberry", etc. |
I like them equally :)

steve
Kim all the way!!!
It's a tie between Kim and Lee, but man, Steve has a SEXY voice. I was listening to the Whitey Album for the first time last night and "Me and Jill" came on, and I was wondering who was the man with such a cool and smooth voice. Steve has to talk more.
Went with Thurston.
I think they have all something very i don't know maybe fascinating in their voice

Damn...I never even knew he sang. I'm downloading that song tonight! |
Well Lee would have to be my least favourite, hands down. I went for Thursdon because he has the attitude without going into the hyper abrasive territory that Kim tends towards sometimes.
That said, stuff like Halloween, Brave Men Run, Sweet Shine, The Sprawl, I Wanna Be Your Dog, Shoot, Becuz & it goes on & on... |
Yes, Steve should sing songs... Well, I like them equally, but if I had to choose, I think I'd say Lee.
I vote Lee....just
I voted Thurston.
I voted Thurston. He has so many different styles of singing, whereas Lee can't really sing very much, he sorta sing-speaks (I love his songs though). And Kim... well early Kim vocals were quite good but she can really get on my nerve sometimes (sorry Kim).
Lee ...
Lee today, but probably Thurston tomorrow.
I love the sound of Lee's voice, so I'm delighted that my vote has taken him into the lead.
Lee has a decent voice and he looks like a friendly person too.
I bet those who met him can second that. |

of course!!!! |
Thurston Ranaldo, definitely.
can't decide, Today it's thurston tommorrow it could be Lee
Right now I'm at a tie between Thurston and Kim. After hearing the harmonous vocals in Do You Believe In Rapture, I think it will be difficult to take a stab at better sounding vocals.
thurston
All equally. Then Lee. Then Thurston. Then Kim....
Lee
thurston & lee ties it ....
they should put more lee songs on cds
Lee.
Denying it is simply stupid. The other idiots can't sing. |

Couldnt agree more mate, except i think Jet Set gets a bit tedious. I love that song Sweet Shine, i think it has to be my favorite kim tune. I mean, its happy, but in a very dazey dreamy sorta way. Its so beautiful. I also like the song Tokyo Eye and Bone...and the opening track Winners Blues. Washing machine - Now THAT is a record. Track 3, Saucer-like is one of my favorite lee tunes, behind 'In the kingdom #19'. I also love kims voice on Washing machine and Panty Lies. The only song i dont like off washing machine is probably Little Trouble girl....i hate it. I abosloultly love the last few minutes of The Diamond Sea....those moments of wailing feedback are so powerfull. Oh i voted Thurston : "Wind is whipping thru my - Stoopid mop" |
the songs that involve both kim and thurston as vocalists are :
schizophrenia kotton crown titanium exposé screaming skull is it right? |

Kim is original. She doesn't really sound like any other female vocalist, and at times, her voice sounds so feminine, but other times, it's strong and masculine. Lots of vocalists have the ability to sound androgynist, but she adds a bit more than usual, I think. Maybe it's the occasional innocence.
thurston, no questions ask.
