Bored of music - need suggestions.
Okay I'm sick of listening to mainly alt-rock (or whatever you want to call it) so I thought I'd ask for some suggestions of current bands that actually know what the fuck they're doing. I know it's a bit weird coming on to a SY board saying that I'm sick of rock, but that is the situation.
Please, by all means, recommend some good rock, but not just mediocre stuff that's alright. Some recommendations for good electronic music would be welcomed as well. Not techno or its variations though, as highly regarded as they are, I don't really like it. Hell, recommend anything, so long as it's ball bustingly good. Look forward to some suggestions to get me a bit more interested in music again. I'm in a rut and need to get out. |
Here's a somewhat mainstream suggestion for you (I suggest them because they, er, get my mojo goin')
The Avalanches If you haven't already heard of them, group from Australia that does some electronic stuff. Mostly upbeat. I like blaring them in the car and dancing like a jackass. |

The album that most recently busted my balls was Out To Lunch by Eric Dolphy. Even if you don't like Jazz, give it a try. Of course, it's not very new... |
Thanks for the recommendations I'll check them both out. I love jazz! Just bought another Miles album today. Thinking of getting some more "out there" shit like sun ra but I want some modern stuff as well so...
noumenal, do you get vinyl? I'm just asking because I found a nice blue note re-issue of that album. Just wondering if you know whether they're any good or not. |
I say give can a shot if you haven't... chk chk chk too. Not the most unknown type things, but i myself haven't left the realm of alt-rocky too far.
ANd while we're reccomending, does anyone know any good krautrock/electro-rock music? |
I don't really do the vinyl thing, sorry.
Here are some more Jazz recommendations: Peter Brotzmann - Machine Gun Sun Ra - Atlantis Mingus - The Black Saint and the Sinner Lady Marilyn Crispell - Band on the Wall Electronic Music that blew my mind: Ryoji Ikeda - 0 Degrees Celsius |

I second that. http://www.skingraftrecords.com Make sure you check out: RUINS AIDS Wolf The Flying Luttenbachers Arab on Radar |
What is Beherit's The Oath of Black Blood like? I like some of the songs I've heard, which is not much. Really raw and primitive, rather than "pure black metal" it's more like thrash/death metal played in black metal style.

Yes, I found OOIOO randomly one day because i typed in a bunch of I's and O's in google and it took me to their site. It was cool music. I saw mono live, and while I don;t much care for their albums, seeing them live is next to religious. Never heard afrirampo though. Some else things suggesting... broadcast liars the walkmen (very awesome) |
Thanks for all the suggestions. That free-folk stuff sounds especially interesting. So I'm going on ebay and buying as much as I can.
Re: getting bored of music - it's quite easy when you haven't heard anything particularly worthwhile in a very long time, due to budget reasons and just bad luck. I'm not sure about all the metal stuff that's being recommended to me. Not really my thing. Hopefully I will be brought out of this musical malaise soon enough. |
|
glad you liked bola.you can't go wrong w/ him. it's a shame it's not a well-known artist. magnasushi and veronex cypher off FYUTI are pure bliss.
|
i would also like to recommend vibacathedral orchestra, hypnotic droney type stuff with an ethnic sort of feel.
Ruins is also great, think Lightning Bolt or Hella but 20 years earlier and better(in my opinion). Their anthology 1986-92 is good and cheap. The Drones- Wait Long by the river..... An australian bluesy, swampy rock band. Probably the best new rock n roll band i have heard in a long time. Shellac- At Action PArk You might know this one but i thought i'd mention it as I am again obsessed with it. Funksdelic- Maggot Brain, ST, Free Your Mind.... All are awesome, i thought i hated funk until i heard these guys. I hope most people here have heard Funkadelic. |
POLVO'S SHAPES IS GRANDIOSE AND BEAUTIFUL!
BLASPHEMER!!!! Polovo has no bad albums. I recommend PARTS & LABOR - "Stay Afraid" METROSCHIFTER - "Strawberries" TAPES & TAPES - "The Loon" SKATALITES - "Skavoovee" THE NEW YEAR - "The End Is Near" NOUVELLE VAGUE - "Nouvelle Vague" BABY DAYLINER - "High Heart & Low Estate" TV ON THE RADIO - "Desperate Youth Bloodthirsty Babes" |

Comets On Fire are great. I'd love to see them tour with Sonic Youth, it would be amazing. It's fun getting crunked while listening to Comets, so psychadellic |
Comets on Fire opened up for SY when they played Houston in March during their pre-NUrse tour prep shows. Come back to houston SY!!!!!
