Music is overrated
When was the was the last time that some musician said something of serious interest?
|
I actually agree with you to a degree. I was thinking about this lately. But maybe not in the same way as you. But I feel like I keep buying albums that I assume I should love. And then I don't. And I'm let down. I feel like with each passing year, the number of new records that impress me dwindles. And that worries me. Is it me? Or the music?
|
I don't personally think there are that many things wrong with any music, it's only when you see so many attitudes/ultimately irrelevant lifestyles attached to it that make it sound more important and less enjoyable than it is that puts me off it.
|
oh oh oh. I misunderstood. I tend to be really good at keeping the music and the people separate.

Musicians are overrated
music cannot be rated high enough |

but what if it doesn't ROCK, Rob? |
Surely there is always someone who rocks?
|
Admittedly I've always been a little less adventurous as many who post on Non-Sonic Sounds but even by my own standards I've been listening to less music recently. Reading is taking up more of then time I would usually give to music.
|
I really thought that M.I.A. rocked back when Paper Planes was a new hit.
|
That's one single I got tired of pretty quickly. Advertisements still haven't, though.
|
^ True. IDK, even though it was overplayed I thought that it was actually well written.
|
music may be overrated but i'd be fucked without it

overrating things is overrated

because if i spent less time listening to it I might get fucked more

I wouldn't say music is overrated at all, but lyrics (or the message) is always overrated, and often irrelevant to a good song. I think Sonic Youth have figured this out cause most of their lyrics are abstract visuals.

warren ellis was pretty funny tonight.

"I'm trying to die without ever having another orgasm."

That Greg Saunier says some interesting stuff sometimes.

With his drum kit?
|
Well about his drum kit at times. Like somewhere he talks about deliberately making himself uncomfortable when playing as to force invention to solution. He uses some bike seat analogy.
And there's some other one where he talks about how he likes to fill in beats with all this bizzaro stuff that surrounds it. Like extra rimshots or whatever. So the core beat is still active, but the space around it is still fresh and slightly unpredictable. I dunno, maybe it's only interesting to someone who plays drums. |
Haha. Well, in all honesty, he's probably my favorite drummer (and definitely the most interesting) I've heard since John French was in Captain Beefheart's Magic Band, so yeah. And I can't drum at all (but they are my favorite instrument).

There's a bit in the Billy Bragg biography 'suitable for miners' where the chappy is going on about people who are good at the art of the interview. I can't remember the last time one such person was churned out, but it seems that in the 80s there were loads of them (MES, McGowan, Bragg, Galas, Bargeld, Reid brothers etc). The last band I can think of that were consistently good interviewees (regardless of what I think of their music, which is very little) were the Manics, and they got very tired around the time they started dicking about in Cuba. The only person I can think of is Kapranos from Franz Ferdinand, but that's largely because he's irritating. Unfortunately, even good ol' cuntnose Bono makes a better interview than the grey hordes.

If it wasn't for music and Bob dole, I wouldn't be on this here message board arguing with a bunch of pricks the likes of yous!
It's totally overrated! |
the dude from psychedelic horseshit does good interviews, and john olson is entertaining
|
![]() these guys like this thread ;) |

Ice-T & Chuck D are two of my favorite interviewees from that era |
Chuck D always gave brilliant interviews. Ice T was invariably entertaining but had a tendency to stay in character a bit too much.

I completely agree. Most times I just what to tell people that what they're saying has been said enough times already. |

You're a retard and you've just pointed out the biggest problem with Sonic Youth, especially since their "abstract visualizations" aren't even really any more than rocktastic catchphrasing most of the time. |
