I like much of this music, particularly Keith Rowe/AMM, Nmperign and most of the Tokyo folks who play with Otomo Yoshihide and Sachiko M, but I think I might rather die than limit myself to it.

That's very close to a list of things I was listening to about 4 years ago. I warn you, the novelty wore off for me very quickly. And the lower-case thing is the most conceited scene imaginable, with very few highlights.

I knew you would respond with something like that, Glice. I have been listening to this type of music for a few years but I really started getting into it recently. I'm sure the novelty will wear off soon, though, you're right, haha...

More seriously, it's good that you enjoy this sort of thing. Because I get the impression a lot of people listen to it because it's quite marginal, and quite 'extreme' (as it were) rather than because much of it is any good.

Well, I've listened to some of it that is awful, and you're right about the "lowercase" thing and I kinda take back what I said now that I've listened to a few of those albums just now; in general, that stuff isn't really doing it for me. Some of it is too minimal, which is cool aesthetically but is just kinda annoying to listen to (I'm talking about some of these guys who release hour long albums where about 30 minutes of it is completely silent with about 1 second of random guitar plucking every minute or two). The "big name" people are really fucking good, though.. really interesting. Really liking all of Keith Rowe's stuff in particular, really talented guy.

Though to be fair, I quite like Taku Unami when he plays jazz. In fact, I enjoy most of these artists better as jazzers.

pretty much how i feel about it. i would add that this type of music as the worst shit to good ratio of any kind of music that i listen to.

Yeah, I got a disc by him that's pretty much what I described. He kinda jerks off on guitar for 3 seconds, making plinky sounds.. then he's completely silent for a few minutes. Rinse, repeat. I love the shit out of it. It scares me!

I think it's a funny scene insofar as it works much, much better live than it does on record, but the audiences are tiny - much smaller than the people buying the CDs, I'd imagine. Even so, it can be pretty frustrating when you're watching it. A whole evening of it can be positively tortuous.

Herr Park - Jakob Ullman, a catalogue of sounds. You do really need to hear this soon.

Keith Rowe - sound323 (2) - 29/10/01. This went out of print about 7 years ago, and I think there was only 323 (natch) copies of it. It's from an in-store show he did that I managed to miss because I hadn't quite fathomed how to get around London at that point. Enjoy!

egrets, the newest one from Toshimaru Nakamura is fucking amazing.

LOVIN' this new anette krebs/taku unami record "MOTUBACHI", a new erstwhile release. Fucking badass. I've yet to hear this label release anything bad.

My frien from kic reccomended nikos veliotis, taku sugimoto, kazushige kinoshita, & taku unami - quartet and I will have to second that reccomenation... that is one stunner of a record as well.
