AFTERNOON SAINTS

THE SHIRLEY JANGLE | DBLP - 15EUR
The three-sided LP “The Shirley Jangle” is a unique collaboration by some extraordinary talents, working under the moniker of The Afternoon Saints, better known individually as Lee Ranaldo, Christian Marclay, Günter Müller and David Watson.
“The Shirley Jangle” is an intimate and subtle meeting place of noise, sound art, and experimental improvisation. Three sides of bubbling audio biosphere and a fourth-side etching by Lee Ranaldo, made specifically for the project. The Afternoon Saints have worked together in many combinations over a long period of time. “The Shirley Jangle” was recorded in the famed Echo Canyon Studio, on Murray Street in downtown New York, mixed and edited by Jim O’Rourke.

The same, unfortunately. Konkurrent will start distribution beginning of January, so Distortion, Worm (and perhaps some other stores) will probably have it around then. leclubsuburbia@gmail.com will have it somewhat sooner.

stu666 12.09.2009 02:56 AM

i couldn't wait so i've ordered this now.

tdenys 12.12.2009 09:57 AM

stu666 12.22.2009 04:40 AM

this arrived yesterday, it's really nice artwork and gatefold sleeve. Lee's etching is pretty crazy! it comes with a mp3 download for all the tracks. the music is very good too and perfect for staying inside when it's snowing. i've played it 3 or 4 times already. i also got 3 stickers with it and a copy of Ruis 'zine which i can't read.

i'm glad i got it before christmas, i think i will be listening to this a lot.

yeah i emailed kraak direct for this (info@kraak.net) they did advise me that it would be cheaper for me to wait for a UK mailorder but i got it from them anyway. i don't know what would be best for you...

The usual suspects (Boomkat, Norman Records, etcetera) will probably stock it.

This is an interesting and pleasing album, a fully illustrated gatefold sleeve with 2 illustrated inner sleeves with Leah Singer drawings. The music is challenging but not harsh; densely populated by varying collage type, aural-kaleidoscopian sounds. I was surprised to see this was recorded in May 2001. (How many of these type sessions are sitting on the shelf somewhere?). I have to say, the side 4 etching looks like a bunch of frantic scribbles to me. My first thought was "my record is fucked up!". If you buy one side project this year, this might be the one!

Bumper.
