wonky thread
i need to have a wonk.
it's hard to find new wonky as i am electronicaily illiterate. hudson mohawke http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJZLn...eature=related rustie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39WYU...eature=related zomby http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u2ZqZ...eature=related joker http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52QM6d-q0JA black chow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IquUaO7hE7k kode 9 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Mptysccgbc mary anne hobbs mix http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wazN-qKeCXM mary is the best source for this. she's a radio 1 dj in the uk and her show IS ON THE RADIO AND ACTUALLY GOOD. this just doesn't happen on mainstream radio in the uk anymore http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/maryannehobbs/ i mean watch the end of this clip after her set when she's talking http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmbVt...eature=related you simply don't get that type of enthusiasm from anyone else at the bbc or in most other places. she actually gives a shit about the music. fair enough i might not like all of it but thats not the point, the point is there is someone at the bbc who actually gives a shit about music and pushing it towards the experimental edges as much as she can get away with. this actually works because you want to listen to something that is new and challenges your expectations when you hear about it from someone who actually cares. in most other respects the bbc is just a despicable war propagandist outlet that tries to force the population to pay for it and it should be shut down. more please. |
Dubstep out of Bristol thing that was part of the MAHobbs show. I find her massively irritating but she's been the only DJ who's been anywhere close to Peel in terms of her influence upon the scene. It's a massive shame she doesn't have the breadth of Peel but, in a time when Lamacq's sidelined and cuntface Lowe's ridiculously popular, she's our saving grace.

What the hell are you saying when you say Wonk? just curious of yr definition....
|
its just the name of a genre. when i said i needed a wonk it was a play on words. as in i need a wank.
the name wonky comes from http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-JXfIV2Zpo a shitty old saturday morning show that us british people watched as kids. altho noone involved will ever admit it. |
yeah its got a lot to do with ketamine aswell.
|
I'm not sure where dubstep ends and wonky begins (and I'm a lot more sober now than I was last night) but rinse.fm is a pretty indispensable resource for dubstep and grime without twatting about in Warp territory. Don't get me wrong, I like Warp, but I think they stopped having their finger on the pulse around the time of that first Grime LP they did.
|
Actually, I had a huge wonk over Cooly G, Joy Orbison, and The Bug doing great sets at a halloween party last night.
Darkstar - Need You Joy Orbison - Wet Look Ikonika - Please I recommend picking up the new '5 years of hyperdub' compilation, there's plenty of nice tracks on there. |
I love wonky. I had opened a thread for all things glitch hop but it fell into oblivion.
I saw Hudson Mohawke live last week opening for Clark and he was really really good. I can't really get into his album yet, though. My favorite wonky artist is by far Dorian Concept. "When Planets Explode" really impresses me, it's so great. |
|
Bumping this thread for two reasons
First because I want to say in another thread how much I am enjoying Ikonika's album right now Secondly because I want to thank Glice a lot for rinse.fm. Awesome website, for some reason I hadn't really checked it before. I'd rep you but apparently I've already repped you too much lately |

my top 10 wonky albums would probably look like that: 1000Names - Illuminated Man Dorian Concept - When Planets Explode FaltyDL - Love Is A Liability Flying Lotus - Los Angeles Hudson Mohawke - Butter Ikonika - Contact, Love, Want, Have Nosaj Thing - Drift V/A - 5 Years Of Hyperdub V/A - Museum Of Future Sound vol. 1 V/A - Museum Of Future Sound vol. 2 Technically not all of it is wonky (FaltyDL is probably closer to dubstep for instance, and those Museum Of Future Sounds comps are skweee), but they're close enough to wonky to be relevant in here in my opinion. Fuck purists. Many other records would have a place in here as well (Architeq's Gold + Green, Lorn's Nothing Else, Starkey's Ephemeral Exhibits, etc etc etc). As for my top 10 tracks I guess it'd look like this: 1000Names - Remixing In The Block (With Dena) Dorian Concept - Color Sexist Eprom - Hendt Floating Points - Esthian III Hudson Mohawke - OOOPS! Mesak - Popkumm Nosaj Thing - 1665/Bach Rustie - Bad Science Starkey - Gutter Music Zomby - Spliff Dub (Rustie Remix) (once again, Mesak is skweee. But hey. Also, 1000Names would deserve another mention for Whiz Bang Scienze. These guys are most excellent.) |
Also I guess my mix would be more relevant in here, so I'm going to post it again for anyone that's interested in getting into wonky.
http://www.mediafire.com/?0z23nmayjqo It includes most of the tracks / artists you really need to know. It's not 100% exclusively wonky, some things are rather glitch hop, dubstep, or even hip hop (Percee P...), but I feel like they feel good in the flow of the mix. Tracklist: 00:00 -> 03:20: Dorian Concept - Color Sexist 03:20 -> 06:20: Ikonika - R.E.S.O.L. 06:20 -> 08:30: Hudson Mohawke - ZOo00OOm 08:30 -> 11:30: Zomby - Spliff Dub (Rustie Remix) 11:30 -> 13:45: Eprom - Hendt 13:45 -> 16:22: Starkey - Gutter Music 16:22 -> 18:11: Rustie - Bad Science 18:11 -> 19:42: Hudson Mohawke - OOOPS! 19:42 -> 21:44: Neil Landstrumm - Little Help From Rustie (With Tobias Schmidt) 21:44 -> 24:45: Mesak - Popkumm 24:45 -> 26:15: 1000 Names - Remixing In The Block (With Dena) 26:15 -> 28:30: Boxcutter - Mya Rave v2 28:30 -> 31:35: Zomby - Euphoria 31:35 -> 34:05: Dorian Concept - Tropical Hands 34:05 -> 36:05: The Munchies - Double Whopper 36:05 -> 37:37: Zomby - Tarantula 37:37 -> 40:20: Harmonic 313 - Battlestar (Feat. I was looking forward to Mono/Poly's album after The George Machine EP and especially that track on Mary Anne Hobbs' compilation last year, and he did not fail to deliver. A bit long (66 minutes), but well worth it. This guy simply makes some of the craziest beats in terms of rhythm and stuff (you don't hear 5/4 in tracks that much, and that is true for most genres of modern music). Impressive. Black Box Matrix Death (which was on the Mary Anne Hobbs comp under another name) is even better in this version. I'm hooked.

bass hit bass hit SNARE DRUM. bass hit bass hithihathit SNARE DRUM.
LOUD SNARE DRUM. great genre. |
Definitely. Addictive too.
I don't think I've heard a single "bad" wonky record. |
This mono/poly song I have called BEATLES BITCH is fucking amazing!
|
Fuck yes! I love that track, by far the best on that EP. His new album is even better though, if you ask me. It sounds like if he went to a whole new level, whether it be in terms of production, rhythms, structure, melodies, etc. Everything, basically. I just wish it wasn't just released as an USB card... would've loved to own this on CD
|
Just discovered Domain ID's Boombox Apocalypse. Great EP! Deserves a lot more than the 31 listeners and 378 plays he's got on last.fm.
Just listen to how he slays: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nR0AKtUJhvk |
Do you know Phaeleh? I've never really got into him, but someone told me that I can see his house from my window. Which is a bit odd, I didn't realise that any of the Dubstep lot operated on my side of the river.

I really like it a lot, the musical segments are just amazing, probably could've done without some of the propoganda samples, but they're easy to overlook when the music's so good. |

Interesting and (really) exhaustive article about wonky: http://rougesfoam.blogspot.com/2009/...ing-wonky.html

thanks, interesting

"Bare Blips EP" by Redinho is fucking great. Lightning Strikes, Bare Blips and especially BANGER totally slay.
|
fox, do you know the song sabacco by quarta 330? I'm sure you do. It's one of my favorite tunes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLJYMAlQjAE also, that "wonky mix.mp3" thing you made is absolutley incredible, everyone needs to get that if they haven't yet... Definitely starting to get addicted to this stuff. I love how off-time and rigid so much of it is, yet it's musical. All the little insane micro complexities do my head in. |
That track is great indeed. I wish I knew more Quarta330, his version of Skeng is fucking mad.
Thanks once more about the mix... Glad you like it. How do you find the new one by the way? I'm probably goign to do another one next week... You should seriously check out that track "Banger" by Redinho. I just can't get it out of my head, getting spastic on that stuff. Super epileptic laser wonky. The version up on youtube was probably extracted out of a mix so it's pitched down, the original version is even better so you should get this one... |
Also, another wicked wonky tune: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffaCiiXCakI
Just wait till the 4 on the floor beat stops and the glitchyness kicks in (around 1:00 or so). Your brain will melt. |
