Niu Xiu Xiu - Dear God I Hate Myself
![]() I haven't heard it yet, but plan on checking it out later tonigh...er later this morning. Has anyone heard it yet? What do you think? |
Yeah, I downloaded it... listened...
About 40 minutes later, "Do you want to send xiu_xiu-dear_god_i_hate_myself_(2010) to your Recycle Bin?" popped up on my screen, almost as if by some magical force. |
Did you see that sexy video with Angela Seo, though?

I can vomit at will without using my fingers.
Sweet video though. I don't know who she is (who is she?), but she definitely knows how to get a good rush of vomit out of her system. Lots of fluids, especially for those HUGE blasts. |
the ghray song I like a lot. gonna go buy this on vinyl if available.
|
She/s in the band.. Angela Seo.
|
Since when?
|
I like it... it's very listenable and very accessible but there's just some good songs on it. "Chocolate Makes You Happy" though... ugh...
|
I dunno, maybe 3 months, Dr. Eugene? His beautiful cousin left the band a good year ago, I think.. she was the best part of the band.
![]() Either way, Xiu Xiu has always been a joke/novelty band (I don't mean that in a bad way, btw), but used to at least be fun to listen to. I'd put them up there with the Frogs... really ridiculous black comedy stuff. But I just can't get into them at all anymore.. their early stuff is alright but the last 2 albums have been just.. yeah. |
this is a great band, great album and im excited about seeing them on friday!
|
They were really good the first time I saw them, about 6 years ago. Quiet and intimate. The second time, a few years back, they had loud banging drums and distorted guitars and it was this big rock thing. It was TERRIBLE.
|
I like all the albums. I think when he was doing his most acoustic thing it was great, and then there was this experimental phase with la foret which is the best, and then air force, women as lovers and this which is kind of experimental but funny and poppy and sometimes it takes getting used to, but there are few things out there that excite me as much.
|
I had a pair of plain white canvas shoes with "Xiu" sharpied onto the back of each heel. Near the end of these shoes' lives, I was lucky enough to see the band live. After the show, Jaimie signed the top of the right shoe with
"U smell bad =) love Jaimie" He is easily the most polite rock god I've ever met in my life. The sound mixer at the show kept on turning his vocals down, and he could not have been more courteous when asking to have them turned back up. |
I hope Xiu Xiu and ICP collab.
|
Did you ever hear the Xiu Tang Clan mix someone made? It's floating around on MySpace somewhere or something.
ICP and Three Six Mafia is dreamy enough for me. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNY7lzp1ho0 |

agreed. I find all their LP's to be insanity personified, and I love it so. everything they do is so specifically XIU XIU. I love the CD delux of women lovers witrh the DVD of all their videos. fucking awesome crazy band. love all their shit. LOVE the cacophony stuff the best! atsonicpark's such a pussy!!!!!! ;) hahahahh! |
oh yes, that dvd.
i love the youtube live version of j-lo too. not to mention xiu xiu's cover of the pussycat dolls lol. |
i'm really liking this album. it isn't necessarily great all the way through, but stuff like gray death, chocolate makes you happy, hyunhe's theme, the title track, and this too shall pass away are certainly among their best. plenty of other enjoyable tracks all around too. definitely a huge improvement over "women as lovers."
|
I really like women as lovers more. But that's because I haven't heard this enough. The best are House Sparrow and Fabrizio Palumbo, in my opinion.
|
Well it's a good record but woman is better.
|
i thought "women as lovers" had one legit good track (the opening one, can't remember the name), but it was overall just very exhaustive of their sound. this album sounds so much more rejuvenated to my ears.
|
ain;t nothing like spinning KNIFE PLAY on the turntable!!!!!!
|
theres a fantastic pop song there
you are pregnant, you are dead something like that |
I don't think I have actually heard any of their albums. They seem to bore me, but then again I haven't given them a chance.
|
Already halfway through this one, and it's nothing special so far. Not even close to Knife Play, A Promise or Fabulous Muscles. It just feels unnecessary.
|
what album feels "necessary?"
every single album in all of humanity is just entertainment to waste some time to, all extremely unnecesary. |
Anything by KoRn pretty much. That's about it.
|
It's just that if I'm going to listen to Xiu Xiu, why would I want to listen to a half-assed version of Xiu Xiu? Especially when their meatier material is so flavorful.
|
Wonderful album. Very much more pop than their old stuff, but I don't see anything wrong with that.
|
im going to see them live tomorrow - I've never quite been able to get into them. One of my friends quite is, but it'll be interesting to see if live they change my opinion.
|
Yeah.. fuck this album.
|
Actually I think this album is their best since The Air Force (another album I really really liked... some forgetable songs but damn, the good ones on that album kicked my ass). Knife Play forever though!
DON'T FUCK WITH ME! DON'T FUCK WITH ME! THIS, THIS IS THE WORST VACATION EVER, I AM GOING TO CUT OPEN YOUR FOREHEAD WITH A ROOFING SHINGLE |
Like, I started listening to this band a few weeks after their first album came out. So, I think this is one of those bands that you eventually grow out of. I know I did. It's just so tired. I'm glad they're on TRL and VH1 now or whatever with Liars and Animal Collective and Static-X.
|
I didn't start listening to them until a year or so ago but I can definitely see where you are coming from. It IS interesting that music like this is getting widespread attention even if it is something that esoteric music listeners like you or I have gotten sick of. I've been listening to Animal Collective since about 2005 and I used to think they were this totally weird experimental band... but now people I know personally listen to them without my influence and they are nominated for Brit awards and making catchy synth songs and etc.
Static-X? Hahaha, not heard that name in years. |
I just don't think Xiu Xiu do anything all that interesting, they attempt to do these tired and obvious avant garde little things that just come off as contrived and annoying. Their production has always annoyed me quite a bit, as Jamie's voice is mixed way too loud, and there are annoying noises that abruptly interrupt the flow. While, again, this stuff interested me a while back, now it's just hard to listen to.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go listen to some Jandek. |
i've listened to this album five times in the past two days. i know it's early, but i personally think this is by far the best album they've made since fabulous muscles. some of these songs are crazy infectious.
okay, i'll stop jizzing over this album now. |

Hahahahaha. I just died. Quote:
Yeah I remember in like '06 me and a friend started flipping out because we had finally met someone else who knew who AC were. Seems like everyone around here knows 'em now days. They're even "played out" for most people now. Making them hip and indie again. Quote:
Yeah, that's why the sound mixer at the show kept on turning him down. It was hilarious watching him have to politely explain that the songs are supposed to sound the way they did. |
When I saw them the second time, there was tons of reverb on his voice and he said to the sound mixer, "Please, I need it be dryer, less reverb, louder on the vocals, quieter on her vocals, little more reverb on hers..." regarding his cousin. Then he did a really distorted, noisey Sad Pony Guerilla Girl that sucked.
I gotta say, though, one thing.. their songs sure do sound pretty loose, in places, and -- for a lack of a better word -- "random", but they actually recreated the songs really well in a live setting. Actually, I think the first show I saw by them was better than any of their records. |
I don't see how it could be compared to animal collective. To me, xiu xiu are angry gay pop songs with a sense of humour and desperation and sadness. Something like that.
Also, I don't see why people expect things to sound good live. Some bands are live bands, others artists like xiu xiu will definitely sound better on record. I don't expect anyone to reproduce exactly what I've heard on the record, that's the fun of it. |

I can dig that |
