real emo/screamo/skramz thread

Rites of Spring, Embrace, Moss Icon, The Hated, Heroin, Navio Forge, Mohinder, Indian Summer, Portraits of Past, Angel Hair, Antioch Arrow, Shotmaker, Saetia, Orchid, Jerome's Dream, pg. 99, City of Caterpiller, Envy, Hot Cross, Ampere, CTTS, Gospel, Gantz, Daitro, La Quiete, Off Minor and Funeral Diner all kick my ass.

atsonicpark 03.16.2010 07:44 AM

Yeah, good list, don't forget Employer Employee, Crimson Curse, Cobra Kai, Love Lost But Not Forgotten, Yaphet Kotto, and the Red Scare.

Pretty much any robodog/robotic empire band from back in the day rules... also Gravity Records' complete roster was amazing.. Clikitat Ikatowi and The VSS still rule my balls.

Derek 03.16.2010 08:31 AM

Oh yeah Yaphet Kotto! Brilliant band! I think I'm going to redownload all the emo stuff I used to listen to. Such a great genre.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HRqbGoz2EI how good is this song?

atsonicpark 03.16.2010 09:39 AM

too good.

It really makes me sad when people make a big deal about bullshit like ac.... I remember when bands who actually used to know how to write awesome songs used to be all the rage amongst the underground kidz. Oh well.

Derek 03.16.2010 09:43 AM

Yeah back when I started to really get into messageboards and junk, it was all these bands kids were hyping. Real passionate bands that knew how to create a perfect chaos. Remember when The Dillinger Escape Plan were thought to be the most skullcrushing band ever? Now they kick important members out and ironically cover Justin Timberlake.

_slavo_ 03.16.2010 10:55 AM

My dad used to work in a factory called VSS so that makes him a very cool man.

atsonicpark 03.16.2010 10:58 AM

Haha, Derek, yeah, I got into DEP right after Calculating Infinity came out, blew my fucking mind... and I just watched some new DEP video the other day and it was one of the worst things I've EVER heard.. wow.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 03.16.2010 11:06 AM

Calculating Infinity was fucking sick. So was Irony is a Dead Scene. I'm completely unfamiliar with the rest of these bands though.

Anything that I would probably like?

Derek 03.16.2010 11:23 AM

Rites of Spring - Considered the first emo band... hardcore punk with Guy Picciotto from Fugazi singing
Embrace - Ian MacKaye's band after Minor Threat, way more arty and intelligent
Navio Forge - Obscure emo band with one record... fantastic bassist
Angel Hair - Chaotic
Orchid - One of the most emotional bands ever
Jerome's Dream - Heavy screamo band with a screamer that recorded his vocals with the microphone on the floor creating a unique yelping sound. Eventually had to change their sound because the singer's vocal cords gave out (he would perform live without a microphone and had to throw up blood after their show)
pg. 99 - Hectic chaotic screamo with upwards of 8+ members
City of Caterpiller and Envy - emo with loads of build-ups
Ampere - Badly recorded super tight stuff... most tech metal bands couldn't play their music
Circle Takes The Square - Kind of overrated but they are a great gateway band. Check out As The Roots Undo
Off Minor - Emo with brilliant lyrics, tight compositions and with a massive jazz influence (they took their name from a Thelonius Monk track)

Honestly, all the bands I listed are good. But I just described some of the more varied ones.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 03.16.2010 11:25 AM

I've heard of Circle Takes The Square. Aren't they that grind band with the female vocalist? I remember really liking them.

Derek 03.16.2010 11:28 AM

Since I want more discussion on this I'll give some of you links to some of my personal favourites.

Off Minor - The Heat Death of the Universe
http://www.mediafire.com/?xbzn2ftpd22

Jeromes Dream - Discography
http://www.mediafire.com/?zfzmtzdwwwz

Pg. 99 - Document #8
http://www.mediafire.com/?n42j4ihzn4t

Circle Takes The Square - As The Roots Undo
http://www.mediafire.com/?u1omdzfegxm

Orchid - Chaos Is Me
http://www.mediafire.com/?aeztmmqnszz

Ampere - All Our Tomorrows End Today
http://www.mediafire.com/?d2mawy5yrr7

And yes, I'm well aware some of these are still in print. But it's not like they are going to be heard here any other way.

Some parts are grindish. They have a male and a female vocalist I think... there are loads of question and answer vocal parts in it.

Chris Pennie, who was the drummer for DEP and wrote their songs, quit to play with Coheed and Cambria. Those guys are idiots for thinking they can replace the guy who wrote Sugar Coated Sour and 43% Burnt.

43% Burnt 8 bit version: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKMTOrNIfjw

Dr. Eugene Felikson 03.16.2010 11:41 AM

Listening to CTTS's As The Roots Undo. I would highly prefer these guys without the whiny male vocalist. His clean vocals make me cringe, and his growls are weak.

atsonicpark 03.16.2010 11:48 AM

Odd, I made a 43% Burnt 8-bit version with Adam (aka DeskLazer) once.. it was part of a project called nintendon't..

Holy shit, I was coming to this section to make this EXACT thread. You da man Derek.

If they haven't already been mentioned:
I Wrote Haikus About Cannibalism in Your High School Yearbook
The Birds Are Spies They Report To The Trees
Welcome The Plague Year
Sed Non Satiata
Swing Kids
I Would Set Myself on Fire For You
Kodan Armada
Age Sixteen
Antioch Arrow
Light The Fuse and Run
Louise Cyphre
Comadre
La Quiete
Raien

Derek 03.16.2010 12:12 PM

I Wrote Haikus... and Kodan Armada are one of my least liked groups in this genre probably. The rest you listed are brilliant hough.

the ikara cult 03.16.2010 02:31 PM

I always liked a couple of those old Glassjaw songs... if that contributes anything whatsoever
I can definitely see myself going through a late-twenties stage of listening to alot of screamy, clean-riffing, stabilized and well adjusted rock music like that. Give it a few years though, im still too angry for all that business.

loubarret 03.16.2010 04:25 PM

circle takes the square fuckers.

A good music thread after all the liars and ac crap love/bashing.

pbradley 03.16.2010 04:55 PM

Indian Summer are my favorite. Native Nod, too.

Jeremy 03.16.2010 05:05 PM

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Sunny Day Real Estate yet. They are the kings of 90's emo.

Other bands: Mineral, 764-Hero (Kinda of a mix between SDRS and Modest Mouse and Built To Spill), Texas Is The Reason, and The Promise Ring.

~Jeremy~

Derek 03.16.2010 05:11 PM

I knew you'd mention Sunny Day Real Estate, no reason why, you just seem like the kind of dude that'd be into them. They're cool though, Diary is boss.

Hah, thanks Derek, I'll take that as a compliment.

Diary is awesome, my personal favorite though is How It Feels To Be Something On.

~Jeremy~

atsonicpark 03.16.2010 11:52 PM

ikara cult, I love Glassjaw - Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence.. brilliant cd.. I think that was more "hardcore" though.

Sunny Day are gods! LP2 is my fav.

Dairy for me, but LP2 is really great to.

Also Mineral's collector came out which hold their two albums in re-masterd form but has been oop already.

Toilet & Bowels 03.17.2010 01:12 PM

most of these bands don't do much for me, but i really like moss icon

Derek 03.17.2010 01:20 PM

Glassjaw aren't too shabby... some really cool riffs. Been listening to Indian Summer.

pbradley 03.17.2010 01:29 PM

The best time I had listening to Indian Summer was driving around in April of last year. It was sunny but there were scattered clouds everywhere, each dropping their payload of rain as passed underneath.

Intense shit, twas.

Dr. Eugene Felikson 03.17.2010 01:53 PM

I really like Off Minor.

Which of these bands sound similar to them?

Derek 03.17.2010 01:56 PM

Off Minor are unique... but the members were in a band called Saetia so you should check them out.

Derek 03.17.2010 02:01 PM

My highest recommendation from this whole thread is probably Jeromes Dream. Download their discography but be prepared because it changes about 10 tracks in (the first 10 or so is the band's final EP where the singer couldn't scream anymore so he sort of talks through this distorted flanger). But after that, embrace yourself for some of the most chaotic passionate and intelligent emotional hardcore ever.

loubarret 03.17.2010 02:01 PM

Also check out hot cross then, the other oftershoot of Saetia

Derek 03.17.2010 02:03 PM

Hot Cross have the sort of vocals he wants to avoid. Great band though.

HaydenAsche 03.17.2010 06:31 PM

I fucking LOVE Heroin, Swing Kids, Crimson Curse, Clikitat Ikatowi, Angel Hair, VSS, Spanokorzo, and all that shit. San Diego was the shit at that time. I wish I'd been old enough to have been around.

When I first heard Risk Revival a few months ago, it was the first time in a great long while that I thought to myself "How the Hell is a human playing this guitar?!!"

This track in particular:

One of their best guitar tracks.

Derek 06.23.2010 03:05 PM

OFF FUCKING MINOR!!!

Oh I'm listening to Circle Takes The Square right now.

REJOICE! REJOICE A NOBLE BIRTH!

batreleaser 06.23.2010 04:13 PM

This was my shit when I was 16 or so, still dig a lot of those bands, especially Rites of Spring and Orchid.

Rob Instigator 06.23.2010 05:11 PM

Lots of good bands listed here.

Anyone here listen to Metroschifter?

atsonicpark 06.23.2010 05:11 PM

Saetia are so good, one of the best ever.
